1 Pumpkin Book Reports and Characters are a fun- filled activity for the whole family! Your student will read a CHAPTER book of their choice, write a report and review of the book, and decorate a pumpkin to reflect the main character of the story. This project involves pumpkin decorating, NO cutting or carving! This assignment has several parts, as follows: Students will choose a chapter book and receive teacher approval for their book of choice Students will read the chapter book Students will write a rough draft book report, and will bring the report for the teacher check (in class) Students will write a final draft book report (in class) Students will write a book review (opinion/recommendation) Students will decorate the pumpkin provided to look like the main character from their book (if there is more than one main character, students may choose one) o This will be brought home to work on! If you need certain supplies let me know! Students will present their pumpkin and final draft book report to the class The project will be graded based on the attached rubric. Students will be graded on their ability to identify story elements and characters, setting, sequence of events, and theme, as well as on their book review. The book report should be presented factually, while the book review should be an opinion paper explaining why the student would (or would not!) recommend the book to a friend or person who has never read it before. Visual presentation will also be graded based on the time, effort, and overall appearance of the pumpkin character.
2 PUMPKIN BOOK REPORT DATES AND DEADLINES: Friday, OCTOBER 2: Bring home report instructions and inform parents about project. Tuesday, OCTOBER 6: Brainstorm a list of chapter books you want to read. Write down book titles and author names. Wednesday, OCTOBER 7: Turn in chosen book title and author to teacher. Students must get pre- approval before beginning their book. Wednesday, OCTOBER 7: Begin reading and taking notes on book. Daily October 8-20: Take notes (I will check these periodically) Wednesday, OCTOBER 21: Finish reading the book by today. Thursday, OCTOBER 22: Complete Story Elements Page Friday, OCTOBER 23 Turn in book report rough draft for teacher editing. Friday, OCTOBER 23: Begin working on book report final draft, and write the book review. WEEKEND, OCTOBER 23-25: Work on decorating pumpkin. Wednesday, OCTOBER 28: Turn in all work (including packet and rough draft), book report final draft, book review, and pumpkin. Wednesday and Thursday, OCTOBER 28-30: Student presentations to class.

There should be NO holes or punctures in the pumpkin at all! Be CREATIVE: you may use yarn, paper, glue, glitter, etc., but NO HOLES.
