Jordan Peele, the writer-director of Get Out, who wore a white dinner jacket with a brooch in the form of a bloodied pair of antlers vii in a reference to a gruesome scene in his strongly tipped viii film, became the first black winner of the Best Original Screenplay award. The adapted screenplay Oscar went to James Ivory, who at 89 became the oldest winner of any trophy in the history of the awards for his writing on Call Me By Your Name. He thanked his late partner in life and work Ismail Merchant, with whom he made some of the most adored films of the 1980s and 1990s under the Merchant-Ivory banner. Backstage he said that writing the story of a teenage boy s first love had been a rejuvenating experience for him. I think that s why I m here.
