2 The story A 34 year old woman living in modern day Seoul, Ko Hajin (played by IU), almost drowns in a lake while rescuing a child. She awakens in 10th Century Korea in the court of King Taejo in the body of an attractive 16 year old girl called Haesoo. Unable to find a way back to the present day, Hajin resigns herself to live as Haesoo in the Court of Wang Geon, the first emperor of Goryeo. She becomes involved in the intrigues, politics and romances of court life, earning the attention of the King s 14 sons. Haesoo is at first attracted to the gentle 8th prince Wang Uk (Kang Haneul), but soon develops feelings for the seemingly cool and single-minded 4th prince Wang So (Lee Joon-gi). With her knowledge of history, Haesoo knows Prince Wang So will become the future King of Goryeo. She realises that if she wishes to be in a relationship with him, she will change history. Can she ignore her feelings or will she choose to rewrite history for the sake of love?

3 Scarlet Heart is a rich and intricately woven story of passion and enduring love. At the centre of the saga is the relationship between Wang So and our heroine, Haesoo. Both are stubborn and willful and very much in love with other people as our story begins. A love to last eternity This theme of misplaced love will play throughout the series for our leads, as well as the collection of other strong supporting characters. As the romantic drama of their lives and loves unfolds, we learn to whom their loves truly belongs.

4 Both central characters carry heavy burdens in their hearts. Wang So wears a mask to hide a facial scar. It seems he is scarred both physically and emotionally. Having never received the love he craved from his parents the King and Queen, he shuts himself off angrily from the world. The masks we wear for faces, the faces we wear for masks Likewise, Haesoo in her former life in modern day Seoul has experienced failed relationships and is not rushing to enter into a new emotional entanglement. As Wang So s interest in her deepens and he begins to reveal his tender side to her, she is increasingly torn between following her heart knowing that, if she does, she will change history forever.

5 There are a large and colourful array of supporting characters within the court of King Taejo. The King has multiple wives and consorts, hence why he has 14 sons. This creates an environment of competing Princes and Queens, with many wishing for their advancement within the hierarchy. To play the King Marriages also become a tactical tool of advancement and the ladies of the court will compete to make sure they secure the hand of the prince most likely to be the next King. This is an atmosphere which will eventually lead to greed, betrayal, revenge and bloody conflict.

6 Haesoo must learn to negotiate her path through the court politics where very real threats lurk. Her popularity among the princes is watched jealously by some, who wish to bring her down. Treading a dangerous path In 10th century Korea, punishment for offending the King can be swift and deadly. Haesoo will have to use all her charm, courage and wit to stay clear of danger. While she is torn between the new emotional connections she has established in the historic world she has been flung into, the question is whether she will stay alive long enough to return to the present.

11 A Proven Story The story of Scarlet Heart was originally a best-selling novel by author Tong Hua, which has sold 1.2 million copies. From the novel came the original hit Chinese version of the TV series, which was one of the most popular local TV series in 2011, with an average audience of 2.7 million viewers in the 35 cities sampled. Also the surge of interest around the show was such that the Finale episode s audience share was 56% higher than its premiere episode.
