Dutch band Fox The Fox have 2 hitsingles out at the moment; while Precious Little Diamond is now moving in (notably) Italy and France, Flirting And Showing is making chart impact in Germany; interesting to note that while Talk Talk's Such A Shame is now breaking in France, Germany is picking up on their first single It's My Life; good reports also (especially from Germany) for Toto's latest Stranger In Town. After 2,5 years of silence, Toto will release two albums at the same time, though through different companies. The studio album for CBS is Isolation (new at 29 this week), while Toto has composed, performed and produced the Dune Soundtrack for Polygram coming out in a couple of weeks. THE FAMOUS 3 WORDS The fact that Stevie Wonder merely called to say the famous 3 words gave him no. 1 positions in no less than 9 European Countries while hitting Top 5 in 3 others. And add to this that the same single is already for 12 weeks the best played single in Europe understand why we pay a sped 8Qribu to Motown this week. The Sound of Motown has been copied all over the world by so many artists of which recent examples include Collins' You Can't Hurry Love; Wham's last 2 hitsingles are perfect Motown replicas and the synthi bass lines in Madonna's Like A Virgin are very reminiscent of the Holland -Dozier -Holland compositions I Can't Help Myself/The Same Old Song. Watch out for the new Stevie single called Love Lights In Flights and you will be not the first one to mistakenly call it Make Me Feel Like Paradise, cause that is exactly the line that is repeated so many times in the chorus. The other great Motown artist Lionel Richie, who in the States was able to produce 5 Top 10 hits from one album is still going steady in Europe with Penny Lover (at the moment no. 27 in the European charts and charted in the, Holland, Ireland and Belgium). Motown band from the Sixties, The Temptations make a new entry in the European charts with their wonderfully swinging Treat Her Like A Lady at 65 this week. Biggest move this week for Tina Turner, due to a new entry in the and significant chart movement in other European countries, her Private Dancer moves up to no. 21 (from 71) this week. And moreover... the album pushes the Woman In Red Soundtrack from its no. 1 position! Other strong jumps for Jermaine & Pia whose single is (apart from the!) charted nearly everywhere in Europe and moves to 7 (from 20), McCartney up to 9, Billy Ocean to 11 and due to Italy and France The Bronski's go to 25 (from 40). A MASS OF GOOD ALBUMS And what a mass of good albums were pouring in our offices this week! To begin with the fantastic album of Alison Moyet (new at 51); an album that should be able to both please the fans of soul as well as those loving a swinging synthi sound; and ofcourse Wham!'s Make It Big (their Wake Me Up is now no. 1 in the US this week, 5 months after it hit the no. 1 mark in the ) new at 17 this week, Pat Benatar's Tropico (new at 71), a great album of which we especially would like to recommend Painted Desert and Love In The Ice age as favourite tracks suitable for sophisticated pop formats; Bryan Adam's Reckless; the live album from Duran Duran called Arena, produced by Nile Rodgers and containing their latest studio version of The Wild Boys; Shakin' Stevens' Greatest Hits album on Epic containing his new single Teardrops, already picking up a lot of airplay in the ; the live album from Talking Heads - Slippery People; Eyrythmics 1984 (from the forthcoming movie 1984, based on Orwell's novel); ex Tube singer Fee Waybill releases a solo album produced by Chicago producer David Foster and upcoming are the new albums for Ray Parker Jr. (Chartbusters), Madonna - Like A Virgin and Bob Dylan (Real Life, produced by Glyn Johns). 31 3

ABOUT THE CHARTS THE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS): In many European countries one chart is recognised by the music industry as the " OFFICIAL' hitparade and is therefore used for the compilat.on of the EUROPEAN TOP100. However there are other countries where various charts are in existence and often equally important. For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant to that position, an equal points rating which is in tum multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singles (or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. There are different percentages for singles and albums. These figures are kindly provided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations such as IFPI-BPI-Gallup-Deutsche Phonoverband etc. For the EUROPEAN TOP 100 SINGLES 25 charts are used from 16 countries, for the EUROPEAN TOP 100 ALBUMS 20 charts are used from 15 countries. Since the sales percentages of a few countries are too small to get their hits into the EUROPEAN TOP 100 (provided these records are not charted in any other territory), we are also printing a TOP 3 IN EUROPE fist each week. The EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 50 is compiled through all our correspondents tips received this week.r)records of the week receive extra points. The airplay lists of the airplay report organizations within some of the European countries are also used n the calculations, as well as playiists of major radio staticres (')Please note that not all received tips appear in Eurotipsheet but they are all used for the calculation of the Airplay Top 50. THE EUROCUPS UST shows the music -videos most aired on television throughout Europe in the week prior to publication. It includes video-t.v.programs and other t.v.shows partly using video's from 14 European countries. For more detailed information on any of the chart -systems please contact our chart department. THE som11a OF AILOTOWN by Sharon Davis t1 2 The Motown Record Corporation as we know it today was born from an ambition as lorig-as 1957, but it took at least another two years to get the record company under way. The idea came from a young ambitious black man, Berry Gordy Jr. who wanted to discover a type of music that would make an impression on the world. Little did he know that his day dreaming would one day become reality and that he would not only introduce a distinctive, mufti -million selling musical trend, but also several intemational artists as well. Names come to mind immediately of Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, The Four Tops, The Commodores - and these are just a handful! Tamla Motown was the first black owned and run record company, housed on the rough side of Detroit, Michigan, where The Sound of Motown was bom. Running the company with Berry Gordy Jr., was William 'Smokey' Robinson and a small tight -knit staff. Today Motown is the world's largest independent record company, with the nerve centre based in Los Angeles, and Gordy is still at the helm as Chairman with Jay Lasker as President. It is also the only company to have its International Vice -President based in Europe. Peter Prince is Motown's International Vice -President and Managing Director of Jobete Music (), David Giffen - International Business Affairs, Roger Upright - International Manager and Ivan Chandler - Jobete General Manager. They are based in Rathbone Place, London. Again, the office is tightly run with a small and energetic staff, based on Berry Gordy's concept of a family business that has stood him in good stead over the years. In 1959 Motown's first official single was released on the Tamla label Barrett Strong's 'Money (That's What I Want)'. The Motown label was opened in 1961 with The Satintones' 'My Beloved'. Later in this year The Marvelettes gave Berry Gordy his first American number one single 'Please Mr. Postman'. With success Berry signed more artists, mostly Detroiters, and added to his roster of labels by acquiring Anna, Tri Phi, Harvey, Golden World, amongst others, and opening further in-house labels like Gordy, Soul and VIP. MOTORTOWN REVUES By the early 1960's, therefore, acts like Martha & The Vendettas, The Temptations, The Miracles, The Velvelettes, The Contours, Jimmy Ruffin, Shorty Long, Jr. Walker and The All Stars, Mary Wells and The Supremes were releasing one hit record after another on a variety of labels, and were performing on the Motortown Revues to standing room only audiences. Motown product was filtering through to Europe on a selection of record labels, until March 1965 when the Tamla Motown label was opened in England with 'Stop! In The Name Of Love' by The Supremes. A year earlier the trio made music history by simultaneously securing the number one spot in America and England with 'Baby Love' on Stateside label. This was the start of a career that turned the group (Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard) into the world's most successful female act ever! The distinctive Tamla Motown label boasted a flow of hit product until the early Seventies when the blue Motown logo was introduced for all territories outside America. During the mid and late Sixties a host of new top selling acts carried The Sound Of Young America - The Four Tops, The Spinners, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, Brenda Holloway, The Elgins, Edwin Starr and David Ruffin. By early 1970 most of them were international names and in constant demand the world over. TRENDSETTING Just as Motown appeared it couldn't top its success, it went a step further and introduced to the world The Jackson 5, a solo Diana Ross, The 'new' Supremes and a revitalised Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. The secret behind much of Motown's continued success is the ability to produce music that has an international appeal. The music has set, not followed, trends; wherever Motown leads, others follow. "We do not make records with the European market in mind" explains Jay Lasker, Motown's President. "If we did we would be making records for something we knew nothing about. We do, however, try to make the best, commercial records possible, and hope that the success in the States will rub off in Europe. Some are hits, some aren't because the markets vary so much from America. Of course in England the language Continued on Page 7 Motown International's Department: (I to r) Roger Upright, Ronnie Jones, Ivan Chandler, Peter Prince, Jen Lawson, David Giffen and Julie Lockwood. 5

6 R CA RECORDS Are proud of their partnership with MOTOWN in Europe and look forward to a long and successful association WONDER BY STEVIE MUSIC PRODUCED

7 barrier is less of a problem and we do look to this market as the entry to Europe. Our A&R people don't say this record is going to be a smash in Germany, for example, but to some extent they know a British record, and sometimes can predict hits in that territory. Also, on occasion a Motown record is a hit in England and Europe but not in The States. Gary Byrd's 'The Crown' was a tremendous hit everywhere except America, and the Michael Jackson track 'One Day In Your Life' was a number one record. Yet in America the radio DJs said they couldn't play it because it sounded too dated". Such is the significance of Motown's universal acceptance that the International Division was introduced. This made the working relationship between Motown and its licensees that much easier and accessible. RCA is the licensee, for all Europe except Italy, and CBS Songs have sub -licensed the publishing from Jobete for all of Europe. Peter Prince, vice-president for six years now, explained the importance of his division. "Motown believes in a very strong international attitude and having this division in Europe shows how important the overseas market is. Motown is still the biggest independent in America, and in addition to being our springboard to the world, the British charts are equally important to international territories as a launching pad for breaking our records. For the past years, since this division was opened the policy has worked well for Major Tom Bradley, Lionel Richie and Motown President Jay Lasker Motown and we have a unique operation that is of benefit to our licensees and of course to Motown itself." THE PERSONAL TOUCH Due to the vast area his division has to cover, Peter Prince spends so much of his time visiting the licensees, preferring the personal touch to phone and telex use. He says "The image of Motown has always been one of a personalised company which stems from Berry Gordy himself, so it helps not only to keep those personal relationships with our licensees, but also to make them aware that, although Motown is basically an American company, the direction of its product is international. We consider we have a strong representation in each territory, and as foreign markets vary so much, it is important to know the markets well. And this is very much a key - factor in our success". With Motown being US based it's not always viable for artists to be on hand to personally promote repertoire. However, this is not too much of a handicap for with most releases a promotional video is prepared, and where possible promotion tours are arranged, particularly with new signings. Also, artists are readily available on the telephone for radio and press interviews. "We aggressively support and promote our artists" stresses Prince. We fully realise how important videos are in the international market especially with the Motown Superstar Stevie Wonder receives more gold from Peter Prince Motown's discovery of the year Sam Harris restrictions of the artist' availability. These videos are prepared for all types of promotion and, of course, are available to all our licensees. This area is perhaps one of the reasons why so many acts have stayed with the label over the years. Some may leave, but they always seem to retain the Motown identity. And some even come back!". As if to back up this statement three of Motown's stalwart acts returned last year - The Four Tops, The Temptations (who together toured America as a block -busting double act) and Junior Walker- and their previous successes are already being repeated. "Their return to Motown is greatly welcomed by us and our licenses" added Peter Prince. However, Motown has never been content to sit back and glory in past achievements and established acts. Over the last two years for example Finis Henderson, Gene Van Buren, Bobby King, Michael Lovesmith and Monalisa Young have carved a niche in the music business, thanks to Motown's strong promotion and belief in signing exceptional talent, both black and white. Jay Lasker: "People are under the wrong impression when they think it would be hard to find a white artist who has sold as many albums as Lionel Richie, or Michael Jackson. Lionel's 'Can't Slow Down' album is Motown's biggest selling record in the company's history. Colour does not mean anything; it's the product that counts". 25TH ANNIVERSARY Last year Motown celebrated its 25th Anniversary, a feat very few companies achieve, let alone celebrate. Special product was prepared and released worldwide, but the highlight of the year was the television spectacular featuring a large proportion of Motown's past and present acts. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and The Jacksons returned to pay tribute to Berry Gordy, alongside signed acts on a two hour spectacular which has only been screened in the States so far. Peter Prince is confident that in the near future the show will be available for the rest of the world. No other record company has warranted a two hour programme on national television and this fact alone surely proves the signifance of a company that started with six hundred dollars in the bank and the determination and dedication of Berry Gordy. Also during 1982 Lionel Richie left the Commodores to pursue a solo career, and not even he could have imagined the success he would enjoy. In less than two years, he has released several multi -million singles - 'Truly', 'All Night Long (All Night)', 'Hello', 'Penny Lover' - collected more industry awards than most other artists, and all due to two albums, Continued on Page 8 7

8 Gorgeous Motown attraction Vanity both of which could be retitled 'greatest hits' packages. Following a standing room only tour of America and being asked to close the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Richie has returned to the studios to cut this third album. Plans are in the pipeline for him to tour Europe next June, while the Commodores next album will be ready in February. With the departure of member Thomas McLary, ex-heatwave vocalist J.D. Nicholas joins The Commodores. Thomas is currently recording a solo album under an exclusive contract with Motown and this is due for release early next year. With a single called 'All Night Long' (but a different song) the world was, in 1983, introduced to Rick James' backing quartet, The Mary Jane Girls. Their first single 'Candy Man' put them on the map, but it was their second release that tumed them into an intemational name. Their second album, again produced by James, will be released next month. BEST MALE VOCALIST This year further exciting names were added to Motown' roster. The beautiful Phyllis St. James, born and raised in Oakland California, who gained musical experience singing with the Hawkins Family and Andre Crouch. Her 'Ain't Turning Back' album has already been critically acclaimed and so far has spawned the hit single 'Candlelight Afternoon'. Joining her is the multi- talented Sam Harris. He hails from Oaklahoma. In 1979 Harris enrolled at Los Angeles' ULCA to study the theatre and musical comedy. He went on to audition for the American TV talent show 'Star Search' and won the entire series as Best Male Vocalist. Again, his debut album 'Sam Harris' is Top 40 in USA although his talent cannot be confined to a particular market, his first single 'Sugar Don't Bite' is in US charts also. And ex -leader of Vanity 6, Vanity, born in Niagara Falls, Canada, has just issued her first solo album for Motown. Titled 'Wild Animal' this extraordinary writer/producer/singer has brought a whole new sound with her which is easily comparable to the early work of Rick James, with an Eighties feel. Apart from her recorded work Vanity also plays the lead part in the Berry Gordy movie 'The Last Dragon' (a musical martial arts story), which will be released in America during March. She tours Europe starting 11th of November. The soundtrack album is due early next year and features Vanity of course, plus Charlene and DeBarge who will have new product available next year. "DeBarge," says Jay Lasker "have already earned two gold records in the States and we still haven't released their best work. They are tremendously successful here, and we want to make them a big act in Europe also". COMPILATION ALBUMS Compilation albums have always formed a major part in Motown's catalogue and more importantly they are big sellers. Again, how many other record companies could produce these albums with such regularity and with such success? With the advent of TV promoted albums Motown was a forerunner and hasn't looked back. The first was Diana Ross and The Supremes"20 Golden Greats' and the latest is Stevie Wonder's 'Love Songs', following Telstar's exceptional ability in cornering this market for Motown in with similar releases from Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye. Wonder's compilation, due this month, is initially available in the. Containing tracks like 'We Can Work It Out', 'My Cherie Amour' and 'I Was Made To Love Her' it follows his soundtrack album 'Woman In Red'. Despite reservations from the media regarding the viability of this soundtrack it did produce Wonder's very first solo number one '' with the album nearing the million sales mark. With his extensive touring programme now behind him, Stevie is back in the studios putting the finishing touches on his next work 'Circle In The Square' due early next year. Peter Prince was first associated with Motown in 1963 when he was handling their promotion Marvin Gaye, Peter Pnnce, James Fisher and Smokey Robinson while at EMI. The product was then released on the Stateside label. He's confident the future will see Motown progressing even further in the breaking of new artists, the continued avid support of established acts and the total dedication in promoting Motown the world over. "We are constantly trying to improve our success rate, not only for ourselves, but also to give our licensees the kind of success they envisage when they sign to Motown. To do that we have the strength of product, but we have also got to go out and give those markets what they want and provide them with the back up they need. I would say our appraoch from London is the right one, and over the past years, we have reaped some worthwhile rewards. For the first quarter of 1985 we will have new albums from DeBarge, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, Rick James, Dennis Edwards and of course, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie and the Commodores. The Temptations who are currently enjoying a long overdue hit with 'Treat Her Like A Lady' will have their new album out, and we are hoping they will visit Europe next year but since rejoining Motown they've had a fairly exhaustive schedule to work. In 1984 Motown still posesses the same excitement that it had when I first began my association with the label back in 1963 and I don't think there are too many people who can say the same about another record company". LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks New singles up and coming at the moment, are from such names as Human League, Cliff Richard, The Alarm, Ray Parker Jr, Tina Turner, Helen Terry, Culture Club, Imagination, and Paul McCartney releases a single obviously aimed at the Christmas Market, with an outfit who call themselves The Frog Chorus, very strange indeed... Radio London jock Tony Blackburn will be taking a vacation for a couple of weeks and Radio One jock Andy Peebles will be sitting in for him. Peebles is also a soul music expert, so Tony Blackburn fans will not be too disappointed. I have been listening to a new pirate station recently called Solar Radio, a very strong signal, and lots of soul music being played. Strangely enough, there seems to be an abundance of Greek and Turkish pirate radio stations springing up in London at the moment, very annoying if you're trying to locate a genuine commercial radio station. While on the subject of radio, congratulations to Radio One producer, Tony Wilson and wife Maggie. They are the proud parents of a new born baby girl. Wham!'s London party recently to launch their new album was packed with all the right people, to ensure that a good night was had by all. One guest was a person who hasn't been seen for a long time, that person was David Cassidy, and apparently looking as youthful as ever, could this mean that we'll see the David Cassidy revival? Al Jarreau releases his new album High Crime, and single Let's Pretend, and also comes to London for a week of radio and television promotion. He has also sold out the Wembley Arena for a concert. Nice going for a much respected artist such as Al, even though he has never had a major hit singlein the U.K. Gary Numan back in the charts with his current single entitled Berserker, and releases his new album of the same name this month. It springs to mind that Gary, who owns several planes is touring the U.K. during November and December, because of his record of crash landings, one can only hope that he will not be flying himself from venue to venue on the tour. Howard (what a great name) Hewett of Shalamar, has put the band back together with two new members, and releases a new single through MCA Records entitled Amnesia. Howard (another great name) Jones, has added more dates to his tour. Chas N' Dave, the Cockney duo will be playing their usual London shows this Christmas, and poor old Blancmange have had to cancel their Christmas dates, and reschedule dates for the new year. My favourite single at the moment is from a little known reggae artist, called Smiley Culture. The single is called Police Officer, it's wonderful, and should be a huge hit in the U.K. Rick Wakeman, releases his first ever single this week, entitled Glory Boys. Trevor Walters who has had some success recently by beating Lionel Richie in the charts with his cover version of the Richie song Stuck On You has signed a deal with Polydor Records. Finally, a nice idea for Christmas. A new band called Inspiration, are releasing their debut single via Phonogram. The single is called You Don't Know How Lucky You Are, the band are donating all the royalties to a very special charity which the Music Industry supports throughout the year, known as the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre. The whole idea is for all of the leading independent radio promotion men and ladies to help promote the record collectively. 2 Gimme All Your Lavin' 43 Love's Great Adventure 33 Still Loving You 23 A/Z Index Gotta Get You Home Tonite 57 Master And Servant 36 Such A Shame 82 European Top 100 Singles Half A Minute 73 Mickey, Donald Et Moi Es Sunglasses At Night Hard Habit To Break 45 Missing You 14 T'as Le Look Coco Aces High 64 Here She Comes 86 Modem Girl 58 The Chant Has Begun 84 Agadoo 87 High Energy 37 Mon Coeur Te Dit Je T'aime 55 The Chant Has Just Begun 95 All Cried Out 41 High On Emotion 50 Never Ending Story 8 The Reflex 40 All Join Hands 76 Highly Strung 83 No More Lonely Nights 9 The Riddle 52 All Of You 46 Hong Kong Star 51 On The Wings Of A Nightingale 68 The Second lime 18 Back In My Aires Once Again 92 How To Be A Millionaire 99 One Night In Bangkok 70 The Wanderer 28 Berserker 75 Feel For You 10 Out Of Touch 78 The War Song 2 Besoin De Rien, Envie De Toi 29 Just Called To Say I Love You 1 Penny Lover 27 The Wild Boys 6 Big In Japan 81 Shouki Have Known Better 35 People From Ibiza 63 This Is Mine 61 Blue Jean 22 Won't Run Away 71 Pride (In The Name Of Love) 12 Time After Time 39 Careless Whisper 5 m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down 16 Private Dancer 21 Together In Electric Dreams 32 Caribbean Queen/European Queen 11 m So Excited 49 Purple Rain 13 Too Late For Goodbyes 31 Chinese Eyes 79 If This 'sit 80 Respect Yourself 89 Torture 53 Delire D'Amour 34 rgendwle, Irgendwo, Irgendwann 38 Ring Of Ice 94 Toute Premiere Fois 60 Disco Band 72 Kalimba De Luna 30 Self Control 97 Treat Her Like A Lady 65 Dr. Beat 42 Kalimba De Luna 93 Self Control 69 Un Autre Monde 56 Drive 15 Keep On Keeping On 91 Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty Four) 44 Warning Sign 90 Femme Liberee 48 Let It All Blow 67 Shout To The Top 47 We Am Family 82 Flesh For Fantasy 77 Listen To Your Father 66 Smalltown Boy 25 What's Love Got To Do With ft 24 Forever Young 19 Lost In Music 20 Smooth Operator 26 When Doves Cry 96 Freedom 4 Louise 74 Somebody/Blasphemous Rumours 54 When The Rain Begins To Fall 7 Ghostbusters 3 Love Kits 85 Square Rooms 98 Why

ROCK THIS TOWN MAGAZINE - Brussels - Alex Vital- editor Record of the week: The Alarm- The Chant Has Just Begun. Album: Julian Lennon- Valotte. New entry: J.Geils Band- Concealed Weapons. Sure Hit: Paul Young- I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down. STRANGE CHEMISTRY Alison Moyet - Alf- CBS From her earlier single releases Love Resurrection and All Cried Out, it was evident that Jolley & Swain' synthy pop sound matched very well with Aff's bluesy vocals. Except for the track For You Only, there are no weakspots on this album. The absolute highlight should be Where Hides Sleep based around an irresistible repetitive theme making it very suitable for nightime play. Further recommended tracks include the synthy funk songs Twisting The Knife and Invisible. 18 Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers- Polydor What has been speculated so long is finally a fact. The reunion of Deep Purple, in their original lineup consisting of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillen, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice and just like their classic records, DP In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head, this is another record that everyone who likes hardrock should have in his posession. The energy and power are still intact in view of tracks like Perfect Strangers, Knocking At Your Back Door and Nobody's Home. \ E 1T 111t Wham! - Make It Big - Epic Wham's career (so full of explanation marks) started off big with Young Guns, a funky and decided rap telling us to Go For It! Well, that's exactly what whole of Europe did, and this strong 'greatest hits' album will again have no trouble making it in the charts. Most of the tracks have a Sixties feel and although the lyrics are sometimes of a charming simplicity all is done in the best possible taste. Best tracks: Credit Card Baby, Like A Baby and If You Were There.

On bass NORMAN WATTRAY, keyboards MIKE GALLAGHER, both ex - Blockheads, drums DICK ADLAND, guitar ERIC himself. Currently they are just finished recording their debut album in a studio in Chinatown. Just released though is their first single: Life Une/A Girl In A Million. As the Captains are gigging as well, try not to miss them * JAN AKKERMAN has a new album on the market entitled From The Basement. Jan and his group will be on a Dutch tour, also a tour through Germany has been planned in the near future * Remember FREEF7F? Remember I.O.U.? Then surely you'll know who JOHN ROCCA is. Well, his follow-up single has just been released, entitled Once Upon A Time * Then let's talk about gigs. QUEENSRYCHE. The surprise of the evening, playing with perfection and enthousiasm. With an absolutely mindblitzing drummer. GEOFF TATE is a talent to be watched closely. Their songs and lyrics make it clear, that we are not talking about airheads here - but great musicians able to fulfil more than the sound produced on their album. One could say, they're better live than on vinyl. Queensryche is heading for a leading position. Currently their debut album The Warning gets a lot of attention. Big plans ahead of them are the tour with KISS in The States and Canada. Beginning of next year there will be a 1 hour live video, recorded mainly in Japan. Plans to return to Europe are made for February * As BON JOVI jumped on stage, it was clear that here we saw a new superstar band, working their way through their entire debut album. With an absolutely outstanding voice, JON BON JOVI is the discovery of the year and as highlite the beautifully sung single Runaway. 3 Encores for a support band, ain't bad isn't it? * MOTORHEAD, London Hammersmith Odeon. This was the last gig of a 16 date tour, and it was sold out. Along their whole tour Motorhead was supported by PERSIAN RISK (The former band of M.H. guitarist PHIL CAMPBELL). The wait was for LEMMY and his boys. As known, one of their 2 guitarists WURZEL, has been taken ill and was rushed to hospital, suffering from kidney stones just after playing a few gigs on this tour. Luckily Wurzel was released the day the Odeon gig was on. Lights out - Motorhead stormed on stage. Immediately the kids fists were rising as Motorhead crashed through their set. The first three quarters they played material from their live album, No Sleep Till Hammersmith. Although it was LOUD, the sound was perfect, so was the atmosphere. Wurzel, still weak, was waiting backstage - only Continued on Page 23 21

As Motorhead finally left the stage, a wall of sounds was produced of roaring plain motors as the bomber was slowely hovering over the stage, then smoke and blasting sirens - The End.
