1 VOLUME 2 - NO 47 - WEEK OF NOVEMBER 25TH 1985 E M R in partnership with Billboard EUROTIPSHEET, The Pan -European Newsweekly For The Music Tr EUROPEAN SUPERCHANNEL LAUNCH FRENCH TV PROGRAMMING SERIOUS RIVAL TO SKY CHANNEL Britain's 16 commercial TV companies have decided in principle to go ahead with plans for an entertainment -led European Superchannel in competition to Rupert Murdoch's Sky Channel, which recently reported losses of 8.6 million pounds for the year to July The decision has yet to be endorsed by the board of directors of each company, but the Independent TV Contractors' Association says it will be 'very disappointed' if all 16 do not participate in the venture, which is expected to cost by Peter Jones and Nick Robertshaw around 20 million pounds. The scheme was devised following the collapse of efforts to set up a joint BBC/ITV Direct Broadcast by Satellite project in Britain. Initially the BBC was seen as a potential partner in Superchannel, but instead it has opted for indirect involvement, supplying programmes for payment and lending its considerable reputation to the project, as well as taking a share of the eventual profits, if any. The channel will go on air next autumn, or possibly even sooner, (continued on page 3) NEW DANCE TALENT With the ever growing importance of dance music crossing over to the general pop charts, the inclusion of a separate page on dance music in Eurotipsheet is a logical step. Every forthnight we will present the best of the European and American dance releases that have good possibilities of charting. This Disco/Dance section will be on page 6 next to the New Talent pop/rock section. Eurotipsheet will also feature in detail some Hot 12 inches which are recommendable for programming and are about to be released in Europe. MORE ON MUSIC AND CLIPS Amidst the liberation of the French TV channels and new possibilities for French organisations to enter the TV world, the 3 major channels have started their new season '85186 with a renewed large number of musical shows. Now that the problem Pay For Play has been solved and video clips are again allowed to be shown on French national TV, the amount of international artist shown on TV has again increased. The president of the national channel TF1 is Herve Bourges and the "directrice de varietes" is Marie -France Briere. The most popular music programmes handling international artists on the first channel include Cocoricocoboys, a daily 15 minute pro -- gramme, and the weekly Tapage Nocturne, produced by Gilbert Foucault, on the air on Friday eveirf till This programme has artists in the studio and shows new clips. Antenne 2 is headed by president Jean Drucker and the producer responsible for 'Des Grandes Varietes':, the big French names, is Nakache while Patrice Blanc-Francard is responsible for (continued on page 3) MALIBU PROMO ON CREOLE TOUR Kid Creole and the Coconuts' selfstyled 'tropical blend' and Malibu's tropical coconut drink: it sounds like a sponsorship marriage made in heaven, and so it proved during the group's European tour this summer, which played to packed by Peter Jones and Nick Robertshaw houses in ten countries. For other would-be sponsors it's going to be a hard act to follow. Instead of just having a name on the programme, Malibu's product was built into the actual stage set, with a real Malibu bar complete (continued on page 3) Super -star Barry Manilow Pacts With RCA Records Worldwide - Barry Manilow was recently signed to RCA for whom he recorded a new album entitled Manilow. 3 UNITED KINGDOM Picking airplay in the this week are UB Lloyd Cole and The Waterboys with The hole Of The M The recently released t-iich_i gotezec. the chart last wee t the high position of no. 9 is also receiving good airpla, as is David Grant & Jaki Graham's last week's Hot Radio Add. The greatest suprise in this week's chart is the new entry by Wham! (I'm Your Man) straight in at no. 2. Climbing fast are Dionne & Friends (19-33):, the new Lionel Richie:, Say You Say Me (14-34) and Dee C Lee's See The Day (18-38). 20% of the chart consists of new entries, the highest after Wham! being Collins & Martin in at 25, Go West's Don't Look Now (41):, Amazulu's Don't You Just Know It (50) and Simply Red's Holding Back The Years (51) amongst others. GERMANY Starship's We Built This City is picking up very good airplay as is local singer Sandra with the follow-up to Magdalena, In The Heat Of The Night. The newly released Fine Young Cannibals' Blue is bubbling under (what a great single, by the wa)together with Black Foeoess' Bye Bye Love. Although The German Top 3 remains static, several singles are rushing up the which Elton John's Nikita (5- ock Robin's When Your Heart Is Weak (18-35) and Colonel Abrams' Trappe 2-48). New entries this week for Two Of lack Foeoess and Kate Bush with Cloud usting. FRANCE Very little change airplay -wise in France this week, though Jean -Jacques Lafon's Le Geant De Papier and Pierre Bachelet's LAn Deux Mille Un are both picking up well. Century tops the charts yet again with Lover while Madonna has risen two notches to reach second position with Groove. Fast movers include Jm-Jacques Goldman's Je Te Donne (11-1Stevie Wonder (15-25):, with A -Ha (28-51) rising dramatically. BENELUX Simple Minds are again topping the Bene charts, followed by Sandra and Grace Jo both having risen one place each. Following the pattern throughout most of Europe, the fastest climbers are Elton John (8-21):, Dionne Warwick (17-40) and Lionel Richie (21-47) with UB 40's Don't Break My Heart (25-52) also doing well in the Benelux. Airplay -wise, Grace Jones is best played single in Holland this week, followed by the ever -more popular Cloudbusting by Kate Bush. Other strong airplay for Dire Straits' Walk Of Life:, Madonna's Dress You Up and local teeny band Roberto Jacketti's So I Say. ITALY Simple Minds has replaced Madonna from the no. 1 spot in the Italian charts. She is now in 2nd place, followed by Arcadia rising to no. 3. There are 2 dramatic increases for King with Alone Without You (6-28) (in the the Taste Of Your Tears single is faring well) and Madonna's Gambler (10-32):, while other climbers include Propaganda and Matt Bianco. SWITZERLAND With A -Ha still on top and other Europroductions following it (Cheri at 2, Round One's In Zaire at 6, Falco at 8 and Jennifer Rush's Destiny at 10) it is more than clear that Euro-records dominate the Swiss charts. Highest new entry for Elton John's Nikita and Arcadia is new at 21. AUSTRIA No change this week in the Austrian Top 3, but several new entries: Round One (In Zaire):, Bad Boys Blue (Pretty Young Girl) and Midge U re. Tina Turneris a popular choice with 2 singles in the charts at the moment, her Hero and new in at 24, One Of The Living. Airplay -wise Kool & the Gang have best played single with Cherish and increased airplay for Dire Straits' Money For Nothing and Matt Bianco's Yeh Yeh. SPAIN The Spanish top 10 is almost completely taken by non -Spanish artists; with Stevie, Tina and Madonnaon top, and the rest of the top 10 filled by either European or American artists, the position of Sergio Y Estibaliz at 9 is a rather lonely one. DENMARK The Top 3 in the Danish charts again feature the two African -Aid charity singles, both by local artists and both called Afrika. Highest entries this week for A -Ha in at 12, Katrina & The Waves's Que Te Quiero (14):, Belouis Some's Imagination (25) and the new Paul Hardcastle Just For Money (26). SWEDEN Local product Tone Norum's Can't You tay a likely contender for the no. 1 spot in the near future, having risen to no. 2 from 15. There is however strong competition, with Modern Talking's Cheri Cheri Lady climbing steadily (6-9) and A -Ha leaping to no. 4 from 12. Highest new entry this week for The with Cheerio followed by local band in at 13 with Briggen Blue Bird. As we Swedish Metal Aid charity single the charts now feature a second one with the new entry of Dionne & Friends. crirla pclunin u u knee deep in the hoopla Sam Cooke - Life At The Harlem Square Club '63 (RCA) One of the most legendary soul artists in a rerelease of RCA. A magnificent live set featuring hits like Bring It On Home To Me, in Gang, Twisting The Night Away and C very well recorded and backed up by a.od live band. A historical recording that should be part of any record collection. Starship - Knee Deep In The Hoopla (Guant/RCA) Strong collection of AOR-type of material of which the single We Built This City is currently no.1 in the US. Produced by 6th band mem- Peter Wolf, the band hines best in tracks like Rock Myself To SI Joan Jett like anthem, the power ballad sperate Heart and the rock song Private Room. Joni Mitchell - Dog Eat Dog (Geffen) Probably Joni's most commercial and accessible effort to date. This is not to say however that fans of the old star will be disappointed as her unique style of songwriting has lost nothing of its impact. Produced by Thomas Dolby, she is joined by Ralph McDonald on the track Good Friends and other keycuts include Shiney Toys and Tax Free. 11

Dire Straits and Madonna continue their fight for the no. 1 spot; this week Dire Straits again at no. 1. Simple Minds make a dynamic move to no. 3 (from 6) and Iron Maiden's double live - album creeps up 2 notches (5-7). Last year Maiden were able to have their album Powers - lave charted 1 week at the no. 1 spot. With new positions in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden and remaining top positions in the (still no. 1):, Germany, Holland and Denmark, Sade's 2nd album Promise jumps in its 2nd week straight to no. 7 and this makes the album of all the highest album entries in 1985 (Tears For Fears and Alan Parson's) the fastest mover (in their 2nd week Tears For Fears were stuck at no. 13 while Alan Parsons only moved up 1 place). The album airplay on the Promise album continues and she is still the favourite album on the European album shows. The sophisticated sounds continue to fill European radio and this will be prolonged in the coming weeks. The Dire Straits album remains a fave airplay album as well and the Straits Sounds mix very well with Sade and are frequently played in conjunction with each other. Grace Jones in her 3rd week up to no. 12 and Elton John in his 2nd week to no. 13 (from 31). Highest entry this week for Echo & The Bunnymen:, their compilation Songs To Learn And Sing (Korova) is new at 55. The album is a classic set of all their English hits (hardly any of them actually crossed over to the Continent) including Seven Seas, The Killing Moon and their latest Bring On The Dancing Horses. The album has a splendid package, includes a lyric book and the initial quantities of cassettes contain 4 extra tracks. Feargal Sharkey has 2nd highest entry this week, his self -titled debut album is new at 58. The career of the ex -Undertones singer has taken a strange course. In '79 The Undertones were responsible for a string of cheerful and innocent popsongs like Teenage Kicks and Here Comes The Summer. The group broke up in '83 and now Feargal Sharkey is back on his own with a commercially arranged and very accessible white soul album. In a production by Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame) Sharkey's current work is a complete deviation from the past and the rebellion has grown into more of an Adult Contemporary stance. Bubbling under the Album chart (no. 102) is the debut album by L.A. based band Cock Robin. Their music is not directly related to the current boom of AOR coming from America (Starship, Mr. Mister):, but definitely comes into that direction and could have a good chance to crack Europe. There are many new good albums out in Europe at the moment. The 2nd album by Lloyd Cole & The Commotions:, Easy Pieces (Polydor) is a fine set of acoustic based compositions. The production of Langer & Winstanley (Madness, Costello) surely helps make this a very accessible and commercial LP. The Everly Brothers have a new one, Born Yesterday:, again produced by Dave Edmunds. Other tips include the new Ray Parker Jr., Joni Mitchell and Magnum. The classification board is issuing certificates to up to 80 films a week and is training new staff to cope * The problem is that under the law the "censors" have to look at all films which are now on video release, even though they've previously been classified for cinema showing * The act doesn't allow a cinema certificate to cover a video release. One official says: "We hope that in three years, we will have covered the backlog and about 3,000 new titles. We should have classified about 20,000 films by then." The reason for the slow progress is that some films are subtly altered for the video market, with maybe violent scenes recut to have more impact. 18 MIDEM-CREATION OF INTERNATIONAL BUREAU An international record and music publishing market is to be held in Cannes at Midem between 27-31th January During the congress, the creation of an International Audio Productions Bureau (B.I.PS.) will be announced. The bureau will centralize and publicize propositions coming from all participants in order to help them negotiate contracts, exchange programmes and reach co - productions agreements. The programmes will be broadcast over Minitel to all the stands and to MALIBU (continued from page 1) with bartender on stage for the musicians to use between numbers. To the band, Malibu's support meant the difference between losing money and making a modest profit on the tour. To the drinks company it meant Europe -wide publicity and, as marketing director Elaine Laws frankly admits, a way round some of the restrictions on alcohol advertising in Europe. Apart from the 250,000 fans who actually watched the concerts, there was a ten million TV audience for a two-hour Spanish special on the band's open air Barcelona show, national TV coverage in Denmark of a publicity stunt promoting the tour, an hour-long video recording made at the Zenith in Paris, and much more in the way of personal appearances by Kid Creole and other members of the band at party nights, disco events, talent contests and the like, all contributing to the overall exposure level for the tour and for Malibu. A programme catalogue will also be published and provided free of charge to all Mip-radio participants. In order to give this radio programme market the means required for its development and internationalization, Midem will this year be inviting for the first time 50 programme directors from all over the world, as well as media directors from advertising agencies and major advertisers. which negotiated and coordinated the sponsorship deal, the tour demonstrated how important it is to bring sponsor and artist together at an early stage. Too many such deals, they believe, come down to little more than a company credit on a tour programme note. In the last few years tour costs for major bands have rocketed. "Quite a few companies are getting on the bandwagon," says Angela Davies. "Our fear is that it may lead to overkill and affect the whole image of this kind of sponsorship. You can't insult the public: we want sponsorship to be seen as being mutually beneficial, not just as a way of making money. Tour sponsorship is not a kind of musical advertising campaign, it needs a responsible approach and a lot of careful planning." ROGER WHITTAKER GERMANY'S MILLION SELLER Roger Whittaker, born in Kenya, established as a hit -making pop singer in England and unable to speak German, has become West Germany's most popular and successful recording artist singing in the German language. In recent months, he has sold over 3.5 million records in German in this country, his last four albums all reaching gold or platinum status. "Typisch Roger Whittaker" sold over 900,000 copies, "Ein Glueck Dass Es Dich Gibt" more than 1.1 million (and in the charts for eight months), "Weihnachten Mit Roger Whittaker" more than 400,000. And his current LP, "Du Gehoerst Zu Mir" went gold before going on sale, with advance orders of 400,000 -plus. Whittaker records his German songs phonetically, parrot -style. His run of English -language hits in Germany, and other European countries, started in the late 1960's, and his first two chart -topping albums were in English. He started recording in German in 1979 and says: "It pays to work on a territory -by -territory pattern. It makes sense to record in different languages." His new album is being produced in London's Abbey Road Studios, in English as a starter, by Bruce Welch of the Shadows. This year the festival will be held from 13-15th February 1986 and it will be presented by Pippo Baudo. 20 established artists and 6 new artists (chosen from 40 entries) will be presented to the audiences and all SUPERCHANNEL (continued from page 1) and will carry the best of British broadcast television's output, making it a serious rival to Sky Channel, whose programme mix has been criticised for over -dependence on bland American series. Unlike Sky however, Superchannel will not originate any of its own programming. Despite its accumulated losses of 17 million pounds, Sky Channel has built an audience of around four million cable homes in Europe, half of them in Holland, and hopes to reach seven million by the end of the year. Advertising revenue, though modest, is still growing, and British television chiefs have watched the progress of the pioneering service with some anxiety. Because it will be supplied free to cable networks, Superchannel will be dependent on advertising sales for income, and no one is yet the artists in the race will sing live on backing tapes. There will also be 10 special guests, of which 5 foreign. Last year the San Remo Festival (broadcast by national channel RAI) reached a peak of 90 million viewers. Ravera has been in the music business for 45 years of which 22 as festival organizer. sure whether there will be enough European advertising to go round. In fact it seems likely that Sky, which has done all the hard work in persuading major multi -national companies to advertise on cable and is just beginning to see the fruits of its efforts, will be the one to lose out, though Sky's chief executive Patrick Fox has said he welcomes the competition. For Superchannel's backers much remains to be done. A chief executive has to be found, formal approval from the Independent Broadcasting Authority must be sought, satellite transponder arrangements have to be finalised, and agreement with the talent unions has to be reached. In addition the exact composition of the 18 -hour -a -day service must be decided. No details are available, but it seems certain that the schedule will include a music segment to compete with Sky's 'Sky Trax' strand. FRENCH TV'S (continued from page 1) rock programming. Antenne 2 has a couple of very popular music programmes. First of all the 1 hour and 45 minute programme C'Est Encore Mieux A Midi, the weekly Super Platine (produced by a.o. Catherine Puech):, the daily Georges Lang produced Bonsoir Les Clips (a half hour of music videos):, plus the renowned Les Enfants Du Robk, a production of Blanc- Francard, (including the special sections Rockline and Sex Machine). Canal Plus is headed by Mr. Rousselet and the artistic director is Pierre 12Escure. By far the most popular programme on the Canal Plus channel is the Top 50, the French national Top 50 produced in co-operation with Europe 1 and the Tele 7 Jour television weekly magazine. Other popular programmes include 4C+ (a daily music programme with live artists in the studio) and the daily Zenith. 3

19 LOST IN THE STARS A&M's latest project Lost In The Stars is an interesting multi -artist interpretation of the works of a single composer, the legendary Kurt Weill, of The Threepenny Opera fame. Born in 1900 in the Jewish community of Dessau, Germany, Weill was steeped in music from his childhood. He was already writing symphonies and operas by his early twenties. His famous association with Brecht began when Weill, commissioned to write a one act opera, set to music a series of Brechtian poems. From that moment, their partnership, with the poet's social and topical issues put to Weill's simple, melodic music; was a tremendous success. The political situation was however worsening and Weill soon had to flee the country, for fear of arrest by the Gestapo. His new life in America, on Broadway, brought him success after success. JUST FOR MONEY Paul Hardcastle had an enormous hit earlier this year with 19:, which, in addition to being number 1 in the charts for five weeks, also stayed 26 weeks in The European Hot 100 (reaching highest position of no. 3). He has now come up with a new single Just for Money:, this week new in the European Airplay Top 50 at 42. Paul began working on it while 19 was still at the top of the charts. After researching his subject matter - The St. Valentine's Day Massacre and The Great Train Robbery - thoroughly for several weeks, he then set about finding the right voices to play the various parts written into the Script' - and much to his delight, two of his heroes, Bob Hoskins and Lord Laurence Olivier both accepted the challenge happily. In fact Lord,Olivier had heard 19 and had said that he would like to be involved in a similar kind of pop record! So having recorded the very distinctive voices of Hoskins and Lord Olivier in two separate sessions in London and Newcastle, Paul set Lost In The Stars:, a Broadway "musical tragedy":, was received enthusiastically in the States. And now, in the '80's the appeal of these moving and charming songs has not lessened. Lost In The Stars is an interesting blend of classical, jazz and folk music. The sounds at times appear harsh and even dissonant, but the lyrics are compelling, emotional and strangely haunting. The album is made up by such diverse artists as Lou Re0:, arianne Fait ull Tom Waits and Sting. ou Reed's version of September Song is an unusual and striking rendering of the well-known ballad. Mac The K from The Threepenny Opera, originally a h or Louis Armstrong, is here interpreted by Sting in a smoother, more melodious rendering than is usual for this song with its harsh lyrics. The contrasts continue throughout this musically varied album. There is much to choose from for all tastes- from Marianne Faithfull's insistent rendering of the Ballad Of The Soldier's WC,.to the lyrical, violin -filled sounds of Youkali Tangfo:, performed by the about putting the whole lot together. The result is Just For Money:, a veritable pot-pourri of noises which chronicles the events surrounding the two infamous crimes in question, TURNTABLE TIPS Armadillo String Quartet. There are the sophisticated jazz sounds of Lost In The St,;`).nd the more contemporary rock interpretation of Alabama Song. All in all, Lost In The Stars is a unique hornmage to Weill's remarkable musical flexibility. and gives a wry comment on the things that some people will do... just for money. Both Just For Money and 19 appear in his new album, Paul Hardcastle just out on Chrysalis. Cock Robin - Cock Robin (CBS) Strong debut album by this new LA Band, produced by guitarist/producer Steve Hillage (a.o. Simple Minds). Features the single When Your Heart Is Weak which is getting a lot of airplay attention at the moment. The combination of dramatic duet vocals and a groove/rock instrumental base works out719nt on tracks like: Just When You Have 11,1ore Than Willing and Thought You Were On My Side. 4 The Replacements - Tim (Sire) This Minnisota band quartet, formed in '79, releases their 4th album (their 1st for Sire) produced by former Ramone member Tommy Erdelyi. The 11 songs on this album are a mixture of Fast 'n' Furious speedy tracks (in the best garage rock setting tion) and some ballads. Fave tracks: I'll iss Me On The Bus and Here Comes A ular. Christopher Cross - Every Turn Of The World (Warner Brothers) New album by the man who once started his music career as a road' -twood Mac. Produced by Michae Onartian, the album features the hit single = nake and 9 other tracks of which It's You That Really Matt wing Street and IHear You Call stand ut best.

Radio One producer Phil Ward Large leaves the Beeb at the end of the year to become programme director at Radio Luxembourg, he replaces Richard Swainson. Radio One producer Dave Tate moves to BBC World Service at the end of the year. All the best to both in their new positions. Former BBC radio publicity officers Dan Kirby & Alan Monohan have formed their own PR company. Problems between Spandau Ballet, and Chrysalis Records still abound. It seems that Chrysalis broke a high court ruling not to TV advertise the 'singles collection' by the band. While on the subject of courts, Whaml's George Michael was cleared in court of nicking one of Barry Manilow's hits of years gone by for the Wham biggie "Last Christmas". In my youth, music had a function of shocking one's parents, the more they liked a particular record, the more we disliked it. Nowadays you can't shock your parents with the Hooters or Sandy Marton, but if you play e.g. Doug E Fresh they probably won't like that. And as the kids are constantly looking for something new, black music still has this function of rebellion. Very often I'll have artists live in the studio. My recent guests included a.o. Huey Lewis, Boy George, Robert Palmer, Sting and Dio. In these 1 hour specials the artists talk about their favourite records and why in particular they like that record. As my programme is on TV prime time I face a rather heavy competition, but recent ratings indicate that our evening programme attracts one million people plus a shadow audience from East Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. When it comes to trends, it is rather obvious that danceable rock is coming up. Mainly the recent flood of American AOR-material is very striking with examples of Starship and Mr. Mister. It is quite striking to see here in Germany a new generation of producers. Producers like Harold Faltermeyer, Michael Cretu and Gunther Mende (Jennifer Rush) are all German producers who grew up with modern and US music and for the first time ever they can compete with foreign examples. One of the most promising new acts according to me is Charlie Sexton, a 17 year old guy from LA who debutes on the MCA -label with an album produced by Keith Forsey. 7

After 8 weeks the Norwegian duo A -Ha have accomplished it; with top positions in 12 European countries they put Stevie Wonder back to no. 2 this week, making it the 3rd time this year that a Euro-production is ruling the charts. Earlier this year Opus' Life Is Live was for 6 weeks the no. 1 in Europe (only once interrupted by Duran's A View To A Kill) and Baltimora's Tarzan Boy (8 consecutive weeks at no.1) was the other Euro topper. There are no serious competitors at the moment, the difference with Alive And Kicking and Nikita is still iderable (although Jennifer Rush's The Power Love - yet another Euro production - is a very s dy climber to the top: this week moving to no. And with the Take On Me single for the 5th week being the best played single in Europe as well, the Norwegian domination of Europe is complete. And talking about duos, last week Wham! had the highest entry in the European Airplay Top 50. This week they have highest entry in the Hot 100: with new entries in the (straight in at no.2!):, Holland and Ireland, I'm Your Man enters at 27. With this new single, Wham! continue their blue-eyed soul interpretation of the Motown sound, making it the most copied pop sound in the world. With duet of Collins & Martin:, Separat- currently on its way to the top of the Ame charts (no. 3 at the moment):, Europe has stayed a bit behind so far. And although the success in Europe will not happen on the same scale as in the States, the sultry ballad is this week's 2nd best entry at 62 (due to good positions in the, Italy and ay) other entries for Whitney Houston Michel Sardou:, (87) Cock Robin(88) Round One (89). Moving over to the European Airplay it was to be expected that the new Lionel Richie single would be the hottest addition on all European stations this week. A Hot Radio Add last week, Say You Say Me now highest entry in the European Airplay Top 50 at 16. No doubt it will big jump next week when the Benelux and German stations have added it as well.
