9 ISSUE 7, MAY 14 PROMO VIDEOS VERY EFFECTIVE IN EUROPE The explosion of promo videos as seen during the last two years, is more and more becoming a very important promotion tool for the record companies in Europe. Each month there are new television programs added which are either totally dedicated to videos or at least using them in parts of their show. There is a string of national television shows all over Europe using videos and also an enormous amount of regional tv-shows totally committed to these videos. In fact there are new programs added each -month and it is hard for any promotion director to keep track of his possibilities for exposure. For manytelevision companies it is an easy way to obtain relatively cheap programs with a good quality. During the next few months, payment for the use of those clips by the television companies will certainly be one of the main topics in the international trade as costs for producing them are getting more and more expensive. Although Record Companies are very glad with promotion possibilities, they feel that it is only right that some form of payment is made by the tv-broadcasting companies and in various countries in Europe there are talks going on between the various organizations as to the amount to be paid. In England there is some nominal fee television companies pay as a sort of "needle time compensation' for general use of videos, but England is the country with the least possibilities for promo videos because of regulations mainly to do with the Musician Union. There are still some shows in the that use them of which the leader is of course Top Of The Pops, produced by Michael Hurl, which program generally features two or three videos, and is totally based on the charts. The BBC also has the Saturday Picture Show, which is on Saturday mornings and is produced by Tony Harrisson (from BBC Manchester). The program has replaced BBC - 1 Superstore. They use a limited number of originated as well as foreign videos. The Tube, produced by Malcolm errie, has just finished as is et Set, both programs featured videos. And for the more Rock orientated audience, the Old rey Whistle Test has just finished for the summer. There are some other possibilities, which include the two breakfast shows: Breakfast TV on BBC and TVAM on ITV, both will use a limited number of videos, mostly 1 per morning and will show parts of videos during their popslots, for example the Top 10. IN further has a Saturday morning program called Number 73, but they only can use three clips in the whole series of programs. BBC -2 has a Friday night program called Eight Days A Week, which, although it is mainly a chat program, will show videos. Channel 4 has a program called Earsay, broadcasting early nights and they sometimes use videos although they prefer to have live bands. The major star of the show mostly performs two songs live. And then there are the so- called fillerstots on ITV, where between Mondays and Fridays, they sometimes put clips in between daytime programs, but the problem here is that you never know when it will be used. All in all, the is not a paradise for promotion directors looking for exposure on their videos. In ermany the picture is slightly better. The main program for videos nowadays is "officially" a regional program called Forme! Eins, but since the program is actually showing in every region in the erman Republic, although on different weekdays per region, it in fact reaches the whole country. The program uses many videos and is produced by Andreas Tiesmeyer for Bavaria Films. Selections are mainly based on the erman charts, but they also highlight the US - and Italian Hitparades. Since the introduction of this program, the rotation of hits on the erman charts has speeded up considerably. National has an extremely popular program called Ronnies Popshow, under supervision of Dr. Klaus Weising, with a real monkey presenting videos. However, it is not a regular program, although it is alternated with Tommies Popshow, presented by famous moderater Thomas ottschalk. ZDF further has programs that sometimes use videos such as Holm Dressler's Na So Was and Flashlight. And there is Radio Bremens Musikladen produced by well-known Mike Leckebush. This show, however, mainly has artists in the studio, but will sometimes feature an important video. In the West of ermany there is the famous Bananas Show, produced by Rolf Spinrads. Although this show never buys videos from companies, Rolf practically produces a special video for each artist that appears in the show. Every act gets a different set and the program is very int uental for the erman Music Industry. HOLLAND In Holland, Radio Veronica uses videos already for a number of years in its most popular videoshow Countdown, to which producer Rob de Boer has now added a program called Video's Op Verzoek (Videos On Request), which is filled by those music videos requested the most by the audience, AVRO's Jessy Winkelman presents many videos during the weekly Toppop show based on the national charts from Buma/Stemra. While the TROS TV channel has its own tv show Tros Pop Video produced by Adriaan Jassies. Last but not least, VARA has the show Je Ziet Maar (you'll See), produced by independent producer Harry de Winter. Videos certainly play an important role in the Dutch music industry. In France, there are video shows on the different channels of which Platine 45 is the most regular program on Antenne 2 and produced by Catharine Puech. There are various videoshows on TV 1 under the general umbrella of Branches Musiques headed by Marie France Briere. A Friday night show which has recieved a lot of international attention lately is Jean Bernard Hebey's 22 Voila Le Rock (or Coupe Double) program, which is totally based on videos. Jean Bernard will feature different videos but has also has specials on certain artists such as his recent enesis special which included clips from the group as well as the solo artists Peter abriel, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford. Another show is Clip Jockey. French cable will also be developed quickly now that t -e. However there are other countries where various charts are in existence and often egualiv important. For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. THE EUROCLIPS LIST shows the music -Videos most aired on teleasion throughout Europe in the week prior to pubrication. It includes video-t.v.programs and other t.v.shows partly using video's from 14 European countries. CONTINUED artists and therefore the big festivals which are sometimes broadcasted on Eurovision still attracks the highest ratings such as the Festival of Venezia, San Remo and Bad. In Spain there are some smaller shows with videos but the major show Tocata also uses them and is produced by Mauricio Romero for RTVE. While in Portugal the pop program Estamos Nessa produced by Jaime Fernandes has already finished for this season and used some videos. In reece there is the weekly video show Musicorama produced by eorge oupis which has no stops this year and will continue airing videos every friday evening. LOOKIN VERY RIM In the Northern European countries the picture for this summer is looking very grim indeed as most programs are off the air. In Sweden the Videobeat Show with 30 minutes of music videos has finished. It was the only Scandinavian show totally commited to videos. In Denmark Eldorado, which is produced by Jorgen Mylius and Peter Herforth is comparible to Top Of The Pops and is showing a top 10 videolist, but also this program has now finished for the summer. As are most programs in Scandinavia. Practically all other programs either use a very selected number of videos or none at all. Such as the Swedish Nojesmaskinen produced by Lennart Andersen and Mandagsborsen produced by Leif othlund, both shows which are finished for the summer as well as the Casino (producer Heikki Karma) in Finland. The Norwegian program Zikk Zakk (producer Odd Arvid Stroemstad) uses videos from time to time and will be off the air very soon. In Ireland, RTE -2 has just made an agreement with reen Apple productions to obtain 16 three hours music video shows, wich will be called MT -USA, a format with resembles the MTV channel in the USA. The show will start regularly in October. There is a strong upsearch in cable networks using videos of which Skychannel's Music Box is now quickly extending the time given to music videos. Skychannel just this weekend received permission to braodcast in Holland and has already added Amsterdam as a very important new area to it's already existing audiences in England, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, West ermany and Austria. Early next year they plan to have a 24 hours a day TV music channel. RTL Luxembourg has a number of video programs, basically aimed at the Belgium, Nothem France and the erman markets. The cable program in Belgium has long been established and is showing videos all day long and EVIL has also started cable broadcasting in ermany (eg Ludwigshafen).The programs are called CLIP -Connection with blocks of programs in French, English and erman and RTL-Plus aimed at the erman market. There are many more cable operators looking into music videos and this market will be expanding drastically over the next few years. Most of the above programs are used for the calculations of the EUROCLIPS list as appearing weekly in EUROTIPSHEET and is a rotation list of videos as used by the most important programs all over Europe. We are planning to keep a close watch on the development of these programs and we ask the international record companies to send regular information on new musicvideos to be put into production or which are just finished. MEDIA TALK First of all our compliments to RTL for a smooth organised Eurovision ala under supervision of Hubert Terheggen and also to the Herrey's from Sweden. There comes some exciting news from our erman correspondent Mal Sondock dj/producer for NDR in Hamburg and Radio Bremen. From the 1st of November he will start a completely new thing, so tells Mal rather excited. It will take place in Phantasialand, Europe's biggest Themepark (like Disneyland) and will be called Mal Sondock's Videohitparade. Every show will take 20 minutes, for 25 times a day. Daily! The first computer programmed light show in the world with every song having his own program written or composed. The inventor of all this is a certain guy called Peter Stenz and Mal is expecting to draw over 1 million people this year. You made us curious Mal! In addition to our news on Clem Dalton, the Swiss correspondent for Radio 24, we can be more specific on the way he uses Eurotipsheet in his programs. Every wednesday night the top 3 of our European Top 100 Singles/ Albums will be presented and the next night on thursday, the listeners will get a report on the European Airplay Top 60. On both items jingles will be made. We're looking forward to hear them! Both the Tony Blackburn show as well as it's producer are very popular on BBC Radio London, but it should still not give us a reason to call producer uy Hornsby Tony in his spotlight. Will he now be producing the uy Blackburnshow? Very good news for the French Privately owned Radio Stations, now that President Mitterand and his government have decided to allow commercial advertising, so far forbidden, on the private radio network. It was unbelievable up till now how some of these stations were managing financially. Rafael Revert Head of Spanish SER chain of 80 radiostations will coordinate the broadcasting of FM programs from the first Spanish Record Industry Fair the Iberdisco 84 between May 11th and 15th. Hot news for all European Jocks is the release of the Motown Michael Jackson album Farewell My Summer Love with previously unreleased material. With the upcoming Jackson 5 worldtour there is enough to talk about, as there is for the hopefully soon confirmed Stevie Wonder European Tour. Einar Hultberg from NRK radio In Oslo will be travelling around the summer cities of Norway starting first of July with Richard Isdell (d.j. at the popular disco Pinguin and also working for record company Sonet).
