ALEXANDRA'S NEWS -CORNER Hi, LIMAHL (former frontman of KAJAGOOGOO) has just given the finishing touch to his debut solo album. There will be a release of his second single Too Much Trouble, May 14th. Currently Pretty UMAHL is in Australia, not to get a suntan, but to shoot the video which accompanies his single. It will be produced by well-known RUSSEL MALCAHY* The 30th of April sees the release of a newly signed act UPTOWN HORN BAND, who emulate from New York. There's also a quiet nice story to it: Their 7" single Effects With My Ex follows the 12" version Sex With My Ex. The 7" title Adaptation has been made to avoid any possible airplay problem. Which seems a wise decision to me! Releases are set for Holland, Germany and France. The band is very vibrant, who played their debut hit to overseas EMI personal at Septembers Conference. Early this summer they crossed the Atlantic again to play European dates. Undoubtfully, we'll hear more about them!* Australian group INXS is back in Europe for promotion and concert dates including gigs in Germany (plus shootings for Rockpalast 1V), France (plus doing Cadence 3 TV), Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and the. WILLIE DE VILLE is doing one performance on special invitation by the organizers of the Edison Gala in Holland. It will be broadcasted by Vara tv* BOBBY WOMACK, is a new signing to MCA. His new album though, has to wait for its release until the end of this year. However there are other countries where various charts are in existence and often equally important. For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts Into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives. relevant to that position. an equal points rating which is in turn multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singles (or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the resit of Europe. There are different percentages for singles and alburns.these figures are kindly provided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations such as IEPI-13P -Gallup -Deutsche Phonoverband elc.a European Chart -Committee, with experts from a number of these Industry -organisations all overlook the calculation system and will decide an improvements, changes and updates. EUROPE'S BIGGEST TV ROCK GATHERING Mid May the cream of Rock and Pop will be in Montreux Switzerland for one of the biggest series of pop television concerts ever presented. Organised via a giant co -production between USA's Showtime, English BBC and the Swiss Television the four nights will be broadcast in already 24 countries all over the world including the USA. Australia. Japan, South Africa and most countries in Europe. The program is being produced by Michael Hurl. famous from his series of Top Of The Pops, Europe's leading pop television program. Michael will have a very international team assisting him including Swiss, American and English crews for sound, lighting and filming. IMPRESSIVE LINE UP Most acts are filmed "direct" in the Pavilion while some will be pretaped during the day on some of the beautiful outdoor spots around the city of Montreux to be mixed in the program and give time for stage changes during the live filming. There will be 3 stages and no less than 12 TV vans at the disposal of the productionteam. Artists will appear on four evenings and the very impressive line-up includes: May 10: Duran Duran- Cliff Richard- Nena- Howard Jones- Joan Jett- Gloria Gaynor - Dolly Dots- Bucks Fizz- Elton John. Most artists will perform 3 to 5 songs live or at least live vocals. There are already 24 countries committed to broadcast either the whole run or special compilations. All emissions will take place before July 1st. Tentative dates known safer are BBC England on May 28, NOS Holland June 6th, Switzerland May 26-27, Iceland on June 11 and further programs in June include Showtime USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brasil, Belgium and South Africa. BBC RADIO LONDON - GUY HORNSBY Guy's prime activity during the week is his work as producer for the Tony Blackburn show, one that has now the biggest listening audience during the week on Radio London. Besides having its own section in England's weekly tradepaper Musicweek, the impact of the program can be demonstrated through the releases in the of many of the US Import Records. imirrphas been working on the Tony Blackburn show for the past three years and as a producer was responsible for the change in musicformat of the program to one that is primarily concerned with soul and funk music. The program is broadcasted between 9 and midday, monday to friday..tairay joined the radio 5 to 6 years ago and before that he was employed as a computer programmer. He started a phone-in program and then did a weekend program for 4 and a half years. "Radio was something I always wanted to do since I was a kid and in fact can't figure out anything else interesting. Oh..yes, radio could have the power to make or break records, but it's never one jock doing it on it's own and in the end it's always the audience that decides". Apart from his connection with the Tony Blackburn show he also no - produces and presents two weekend breakfast programs called "London Today". The music on the show is a mixture of the best of the latest releases and the current BBC Top 40. Buster - Nanna - D Immediately striking when taking a look at The Scandinavian Charts is the fact that there is amazingly enough no local Scandinavian record that. apart from it's country of origin, also charts in another Scandinavian country. All local hits remain local and do not tend to cross over to the other markets in Scandinavia, The only exception to this rule was last year's European succes Laidback (remember Sunshine Reggae?), this one charted not only in it's original country Denmark but also elsewhere in Scandinavia. But the song had English lyrics and was therefore easier to chart elsewhere. Most of the singles in the Scandinavian Charts are successes elsewhere in Europe apart from e.g. Slade who are very popular with two singles charted of which Run Runaway is not appearing in the European Top 100 Singles. Mike Oldfield's single Crime Of Passion is srredii doing well and not appearing anymore in the Euro charts (used to be big in Germany and Italy). Scandinavia is (together with the French and The Spanish) a bit late in discovering the appeal of Nena, 99 Luftballons is in the lower regions of the Euro charts. The Flying Pickets' Only You is still very popular but for the rest of Europe downgrading the charts. Though there is some consensus in the general single sales pattern for the international releases, Finland clearly stands out as different from the rest of Scandinavia. Not appearing in the above charts and already disappeared from the Euro charts for a few weeks is the McCartney/ Jackson single Say Say Say which is still nr. 1 in Finland and Gazebo's I Like Chopin is doing well in the Finnish charts while the rest of Europe has nearly forgotten this one. We must bear in mind, however, that the single market in Scandinavia is different from the rest of Europe. The overall single sales are relatively speaking very low compared to other European markets. In one of the coming issues we will take a closer look at the Scandinavian album market for which the sales pattern doesn't differ that much as the singles do. With regards to the T.V. situation it is rather quiet Up North. The monday show "Mandagsborsen" with it's tradional weekly live broadcast from the beautiful Grand Hotel in Stockholm has had it's last program mid aphl and will not return until! end ofaugust. The popular show "Nojesmaskinen" with it's growing array of international artists is due to come back after the summer. in Denmark the weekly progarm "Eldorado" presented and co -produced by the popular Jurgen Mylius is faking a break till september. Norwegian program "Zikk Zakk" produced by Odd Arvid Stroemstad wit be off the air soon. And what about Finland? The monthly pop program "Casino" (producer Heikki Karma) has planned to return after the summer, but when is unknown as of yet. This means that our weekly T.V. section will not feature Scandinavia until) the end of the summer period. 5
