American radio stations were iti:e.t.:aii.zing themselves in the so called 'urban contemporary music' and the immediate example for Europe in 84 was of course Prince, who was able to score in all categories. When Doves Cry was the fastest moving single in the history of Warner Brothers. And another example, though not so successful, was Peter Wolf, who, after his departure from the J. Geils Band lined up with Michael Jonzun of Jonzun Crew fame and in this way contributed to the decreasing importance of musical borders. MORE NEW STYLES The New York ghetto The Bronx was in more than one way important for the rise of dance music. irst of all Breakdance, Hip Hop and Rap emerged all from the Bronx and were popularized the last two years. Two movies on this phenomenon came out, Beat Street and Breakin' and some breakdance singles made the charts including Street Dance (Break Machine), Hey You (Rock Steady Crew) and Breakin' (011ie & Jerry). On top of that, producers coming from the Bronx like Arthur Baker and John 'Jellybean' Benitez were responsible for the 12" mixes of established artists like David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross and Madonna saw also the emerge of the so called 'cocktail pop'. Groups like Sade, Everything But The Girl, Working Week were using cocktail -like jan music into a pop setting. Joe Jackson was using the jazz as a basis for his album Body And Soul (a tribute to Sonny Rollins) and Paul Wellers' Style Council contained some midnight jazzy tunes (e.a. The Paris Match). Apart from the enormous worldwide success for Sade, the group that exploited this style most successfully was of course Matt Bianco. in fact no musical style was sacred in Artist like Carmel and Alison Moyet were using gospel elements in their music and one even saw a new wave happening in the country music with artists like Rank & ile, Violent emmes, Jason &The Scorchers, R.E.M., Rubber Rodeo, etc. All mixed country elements into pop music. ft is to be expected that this blend of musical styles will become more and more fashionable and that the strict distinction between musical styles will gradually vanish. A lot of soundtracks were released during 1984; soundtracks that yielded hitsingles as well. Obvious examples include Purple Rain, ootloose, The Woman In Red and Ghostbusters. Less successful were (at least in Europe) Beat Street, Up The Creek, Streets Of ire and Metropolis. NEW CHART IMPACT And of course an overview of 84 is not complete without mentioning the impact of.g.t.h. Since Jerry &The Pacemackers there wasn't any group in the able to chart its first 3 singles to the top and the release of their album led to the largest advance order of an album in Englands history. ZTT brought back the beauty of the pop single, according to their own words. And although the local pop scene in European countries did not seem to have the same importance (for instance the German wave of 82/63),1984 still was a good year for crossover. But enough of that has been said in earlier issues. Artists that made their first chart impact in the past year and who, we think will be able to maximize this success in 1985 include Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Talk Talk, Bronski Beat, Alison Moyet, LJoyd Cole &The Commotions and Aztec Camera. 3

One of the first molar releases of this year undoubtedly is PHIL COLLINS' new single Susudio, a high energetic song from his forthcoming album called No Jacket Required. Phil chose this album title because he had several bad experiences in restaurants and bars of posh hotels that wouldn'tb8olet him in peace while sitting there without a real jacket. This new Collins single follows closely on the heels of PHIUP BAILEY. a CBS black act produced by an Englishperstar, which is quite unique, especially for the Americanhe Bailey album and single are on their way to have enormous success and Phil Collins co -wrote the tune. On top of that in some Southern European countries, his Soundtrack Against All Odds is still doing very well. The new album should be out mid ebruary immediately followed by a 5 months long world tour including 5 continents. Collins will be touring extensively through the and Europe in ebruary, March and will than go to Australia mid April * We hear that OREIGNER's I Want To Know What Love Is might be on its way to become the biggest single ever for Atlantic Records in the US as the sales are enormous. The group should be in Europe for promotion soon * MUSIC BOX, Europe's first and only all music cable and satellite TV channnel will be increasing its regular television production by 50% from January 26th 1985 and increasing its transmission hours by more than 11%, bringing it up to 18 hours a day. The total output of the station, from January 26th will now be 126 hours a week. Music Box has just completed its first full week of programming from Holland and today announced that in the coming months it plans to record programs in inland, Norway. Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and rance * Good news for European 'hip -hoppers'. The follow-up movie to the very successful Breakin' will be in the European cinemas next month. It is called Electric Boogaloo and contains not only some new OLLIE & JERRY tunes, but also a very commercial single entitled We Believe In The Beat by beautiful CAROL LYNN TOWNES, This new American singer will be in Europe in ebruary for promotion signing. After the success for Electric Boogaloo, which everyone expects, there will also be a Carol Lynn Townes solo album. Watch out for this new pretty star of 85! *A new single and album are also expected in the spring from Motown's very promising act DEBARGE, an act that has already broken in the US but is likely to be big in Europe * Being at London at X-Mas time, we saw a few great concerts. Here's a short report. HOWARD JONES (with support act STRAWBERRY SWITCHBLADE) played the Royal Albert Hall. And it was an evening we're likely to remember for a long time. If you haven't had the opportunity to see them both in concert don't miss out on the chance of having a wonderful evening * On to CULTURE CLUB. Unlike announcements in the press, all 6 gigs at Wembley were sold out. Culture Club played a selection of hits and songs from all their albums. BOY GEORGE dedicated the song Mannequin to those, writing negatively about him. The concert saw the absolute highlight in the song That's The Way when their two backing singers RUBY & MO stepped forward to give the punters a demonstration of their great voices, * During X-Mas time everyone is having their X-Mas party, and so did ANY TROUBLE (playing Dingwalls). Their lead (singer, CLIVE GREGSON did a solo set with songs from his forthcoming solo album which wit be released in ebruary. containing all selfpenned, previously unreleased new songs. Then Any Trouble came on. Two great sets with songs from all their albums including the very new ones which will be on their new album, also planned for a ebruary release. The title to the album has not been decided yet. The punters wouldn't let the band leave before playing quite a lot of encores, which showed once again that Any Trouble are one of Britain better bands! Gigs for their tour in ebruary will be announced soon * METALLICA, TANK & TORME played their gig at the Lyceum to an overenthousiastic crowd of headbangers, playing material from their latest albums plus highlights of older songs * There's a new band around called SCARY THIEVES. They have supported NIK KERSHAW on his tour, including 4 nights at Hammersmith Odeon. Their debut single has just been released, entitled Tell Me Girl, At the end of January the new single will be on the market, called Dying In Vain. Watch out for this new band * News about BILLY IDOL. As announced in an earlier issue, he did an interview with Penthouse (which did amuse me during my flight back!). Well, there's news about him again. Billy will be making a movie and besides playing the leading part, is involved in writing the screenplay. In January Billy Idol is in the studio to record a new album. 3 or 4 tracks from the movie will also be on his album, which has the working title King Death (same as the movie).
