Jubilee Arts Festival and its three anchor events intend to offer a platform for artists across ANZ to celebrate Mawlana Hazar Imam s Diamond Jubilee through their art. In order to provide artists with additional creative and artistic direction as they develop their submission, four creative prompts have been developed. A creative prompt is a word, phrase or idea that provokes and inspires creative or critical thought from an artist. Prompts are often used by artists to help them think about complex themes in simple and relatable terms. Artists are required to incorporate one of these four creative prompts: Legacy Aspiration Time Devotion Artists are encouraged to be creative with use of the prompts. As part of the application process, artists will be asked to describe how your submission connects to one of the creative prompts. 8

9 EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE THE CREATIVE PROMPTS Below are some examples to help you understand the creative prompts. However, you should be as creative as you can be in connecting to one or more of these broad ideas. Voice: Select or create a song with language about legacy (e.g., songs about family and parent/child relationships, or a cover song or medley of songs from an illustrious artist that demonstrates that his/her legacy lives on in performance). Legacy Creative Arts: Choose or create pieces of poetry with language about legacy and the passing on of traditions and perform them on stage. Photography: Photograph a father passing an important family heirloom or tradition to his child. Dance: Illustrate the story of struggle and aspiration, and perhaps the achievement of a dream in the ballet or modern/contemporary styles. Aspiration Music: Select or create a piece dedicated to imitating a role model, such as playing the keyboard like Herbie Hancock, or DJ-ing like Funk Master Flex, or imitating the image of dreams into the composition of music itself, similar to Debussy s composition of Clouds and Water Games. Film: Create a movie about someone who has overcome struggles to achieve their dream/aspiration. Film: Create a time-lapse film showing the change or growth of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Time Dance: Create a group dance piece that illustrates narratively a passage through decades. Canvas: Create a painting depicting time travel. Sculpture: Create a sculpture which shows a moment frozen in time such as falling snowflake or pouring of liquid from a vessel. 9

10 Voice: Select or create a piece with devotional themes, such as a Qasida or selection from an Oratorio, or experiment with vocal styles that are already devotional, such as Bhajan and Qawwali, and blend these styles with other kinds of repertoire. Devotion Dance: Incorporate particular gestures that are devotional in nature, such as Pranaam (hands-closed prayer), Salaam, the bowing of heads, and even sampling such movement from across world religions and how they express devotion. Literary / Creative Arts: Select religious or devotional texts to perform onstage, such as Quranic ayats, Biblical excerpts, or mystical poetry (e.g., from Rumi and Shams). 15 ARTS GALLERY The Art Gallery will be a gallery showcasing visual arts from Ismaili talent from around ANZ. Curated and displayed in a formal, high quality setting, the Art Gallery aims to encourage an appreciation of art and its role in society through direct engagement with original works reflecting the richness and diversity of our Global Jamat. The Gallery will provide a visual platform for critical thinking across cultures, disciplines, media and contexts. The Jubilee Arts Festival invites submissions from across eight categories in the visual arts: Canvas Media, Paper Media, Graphic Design/Print Media, 3-Dimensional/Sculpture, Photography, Mixed Media, Art, Digital Installations, and Built Environment. All Jamati members who wish to participate may submit their artwork to their respective city s National Art Gallery. Artists are encouraged to collaborate in producing an artwork; there is no maximum number of artists for any submission. SUBMISSION CATEGORIES AND ENTRY GUIDELINES Canvas Media: Canvas Media is artwork that is hand-painted or hand-drawn on canvas cloth. Canvas media is often mounted on a wood frame and hung on walls. The methods or tools used to paint on canvas may vary, though traditionally these artworks are painted or drawn by an instrument such as a paintbrush or the artist s fingers. Paper Media: Paper Media includes hand-painted or hand-drawn artwork on fine art quality paper. Submissions in this category may have been created with pencils, ink, or any other tool used to hand-paint or hand-draw the artwork. Paper Media pieces are also often framed and hung on a wall. Graphic Design/Print Media: Graphic Design/Print Media is artwork that is printed, for example through screen-printing or digital printing. Screen-printing is one of the most traditional methods of printing, while digital printing is the most common. Graphic Design/Print Media artists typically create their original artwork on a computer and print it using one of these methods. 3-Dimensional (Sculpture) Media: 3-Dimensional ( 3D ) Media involves creating a sculpture, which is essentially a freestanding object. Photography Media: Photography Media includes photos of people, places, objects, or spaces captured using a digital 15

16 or film camera. Photographers generally reproduce their photographs in print and this type of artwork is also often framed and hung on a wall. Mixed/ Assembled Media Mixed/Assembled Media is artwork that combines the above types of art media to create one piece of art. Art & Digital Installations Art & Digital Installations include custom artwork that is created to transform a space and allows the audience to interact with the piece using more than one of their senses, usually touch, sound and sight. An installation piece will generally serve to transform the space into something the audience can fully immerse themselves in. Built Environment The focus here is on the built environment, which refers to the man-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings to parks. It has been defined as "the humanitarian-made space in which people live, work, and recreate on a day-to-day basis". Many will relate this to architecture, which is both the process and product of planning, designing and constructing a physical structure or space, such as buildings, landscapes, open areas, urban development, and other environmental projects. Architecture can also include the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and spaces. Material and design elements often vary across global regions, and often have cultural significance.
