2 ZdD faylar Introduction Vibrations Flower Circle of life Horns and Bones Biography Working Technique #3 #4 #7 #9 #12 #16 #19 Paris November 2015 ZED TAYLOR 2/23
3 WHO ARE YOU Z? heat, cut, melt, oil, knead, press, sand, polish, rust, weld, hang, strip, varnish these are verbs of action defining an artisan at work. The same verbs though can apply to the work of sculptor Zed Taylor. He is no artisan as he modestly depicts himself, he is not into outsider art and is not a disciple of arte povera. Zed is a magician of emotions who gives life to wood and metal left aside. Through his hands, rough materials discarded or ignored by many lose all rigidity and harshness to come back to life in a liberating breath of life. Rings are so thin they could break, they sing in a movement of torsion but won t break. The strips of wood carefully assembled start vibrating together slowly and end up subtly overwhelming you. The mechanics become a game and the art engulfs you; an oversized flower you transform as you feel and want, always sharing and conversing with the artist. ZED TAYLOR 3/23
4 VIBRATIONS everything starts with material slivers of ordinary wood thinly sliced in curves to gather sounds and give back emotions. This is an essential and meticulous preparatory work of marquetry that enables the artist to find his true source of energy. The incomparable strength of this handmade matrix will allow him to fully cut, dig, seal, plug, construct, de-construct and to feed the art piece with no limit of colours, acids, varnish, wax These vibrations are enriched by an accumulation of sediments we only though alchemist had the secret to it echoes within us, it fascinates us like these ancient rock paintings, so simple yet full of life and truth universal. 7 FLOWER the little flower will grow big she learnt how to survive in the undergrowth, how to hide, imitating the natural grain of all those honorable woods. The work of he cabinetmaker is particularly elaborated in this everlasting flower. Bold cuttings are here like silk petals sticking out in pairs showing a strong and powerful slit shell. You are attracted by the complex pistil of rusted iron, welded and polished, sensual and full of spines like the long calyx of an exotic plant. Sitor Senghor Nature s revenge, this flower managed to keep its fierce gracefulness, although in a rigid case, and amazingly knows how to fold up and look inwards in a protective move. Sitor Senghor ZED TAYLOR 7/23
8 ZED TAYLOR 8/23
9 CIRCLE OF LIFE vibrations are now calm and soothe, finding intimate harmony and inner serenity. Rings and hollowed out woods are floating, swing slowly, in a perpetual movement created by a light breeze or a gentle caress. We are reassured by such rounded and welcoming circles. The strengths remain though, through a rough and elaborated material which sometimes even dares to take root in endless drippings. We seem to reconnect with life through these circles of peace the hollowed hearts call for a real introspection and for a conscious breathing, bringing us a little closer to the happiness of being and to a peaceful reality. 12 HORNS AND BONES After the vibrations and circle of life series the idea of exploring a path of petrified flowers and creatures came naturally. Flowers from another age like bones just excavated, articulated spatial flowers breathing, strong in their hypnotic movement before being instantly magically frozen. It is to be a voyage, a pilgrimage, a trail across a primary forest full of meanings: a forest of the origins, worrisome by fear of the unknown, portraying the image of a vegetal chaos, wild. Isn t the meaning of latin Forestis the far away, the foreigner? In other words, the territory lying on the borders of humanity, populated in our minds by super humans or monsters? Flower #2 was blossoming, rounded, sensual. Venomous is half asleep waiting for the right time to seize its prey; as are Horns, rising up or upside down, and Bones still moving all creatures, oversized, stretched or recurved, born from a very inspired mind. 16 BIOGRAPHY new eg without his metal protection ready to give life ZED TAYLOR 16/23
17 BIOGRAPHY Anglo-Swiss artist, born in Geneva in What is called inspiration only comes really from regular work I didn t go to art school, thanks God no, I would have been thought all those techniques which I don t want to know mean I want to find my own technique (Sir Francis Bacon by David Hinton ). Zed learned, practiced and discovered all he needed on his own (his parents categorically Beaux Arts studies) and started his own studio at the age of 21. Painting came first in Geneva, then welded metal, plaster and cement in New York, mixed media in paintings in Paris. In 1998 he lost everything but his own life when his loft-atelier burned down. Followed immediately a strong and intense experience with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Afghanistan (1999). Several and diversified inspirations thereafter in South Africa, Ibiza, London, using skins, salt, sand, light to give more substance to his work. And finally back to his first and favourite media, sculpture, combined with vibrant movement in Berlin. Zed lives and works in Berlin (Germany) ever since.
