1 ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ACADEMIC STANDARDS The Our Water, Our Future program addresses the following Academic Standards. (Complete versions of the Academic Standards are available at SCIENCE STANDARDS SC04-SC1-01 Describe how natural events and human activities have positive and negative impacts on environments (e.g., fire, floods, pollution, dams). SC04-S4C-01 Describe ways various resources (e.g., air, water, plants, animals, soil) are utilized to meet the needs of a population. SC04-S4C-02 Differentiate renewable resources from nonrenewable resources. SC04-S4C-0 Analyze the effect that limited resources (e.g., natural gas, minerals) may have on an environment. SC04-S4C-04 Describe ways in which resources can be conserved (e.g., by reducing, reusing, recycling, finding substitutes). SC04-S6C-01 Identify the sources of water within an environment (e.g., ground water, surface water, atmospheric water, glaciers). SC04-S6C-02 Describe the distribution of water on the Earth s surface. MATHEMATICS STANDARDS M04-S1C1-01 Read whole numbers in contextual situations. M04-S1C1-02 Identify whole numbers in or out of order. M04-S1C1-0 Write whole numbers in or out of order. M04-S1C1-07 Compare two whole numbers. M04-S1C1-14 Use decimals in contextual situations. W04-S1C1-02, W05-S1C1-02 Determine the purpose (e.g., to entertain, to inform, to communicate, to persuade) of an intended writing piece. W04-S1C1-0, W05-S1C1-0 Determine the intended audience of a writing piece. W04-S1C1-04, W05-S1C1-04 Use organizational strategies (e.g., graphic organizer, KWL chart, log) to plan writing. W04-S1C1-05, W05-S1C1-05 Maintain a record (e.g., list, pictures, journal, folder, notebook) of writing ideas. W04-S1C1-06, W05-S1C1-06 Use time-management strategies, when appropriate, to produce a writing product within a set time period. W04-S1C2-01, W05-S1C2-01 Use a prewriting plan to develop a draft with main idea(s) and supporting details. (See Strand 2) W04-S1C-02, W05-S1C-02 Add details to the draft to more effectively accomplish the purpose. W04-S1C-0, W05-S1C-0 Rearrange words, sentences, and paragraphs to clarify the meaning of the draft. W04-S1C-04, W05-S1C-04 Use a combination of sentence structures (i.e., simple, compound) to improve sentence fluency in the draft. W04-S1C-06, W05-S1C-06 Apply appropriate tools or strategies (e.g., peer review, checklists, rubrics) to refine the draft. R04-S2C1-10 Identify common forms of literature (e.g., poetry, novel, short story, biography, autobiography, drama) based upon their characteristics. 7 LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARDS LS-E Interpret and respond to questions and evaluate responses both as interviewer and interviewee. LS-E4 Predict, clarify, analyze and critique a speaker s information and point of view. SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS 1SS-E2 Describe the legacy and cultures of prehistoric American Indians in Arizona, including the impact of, and adaptations to geography. 1SS-E Describe Spanish and Mexican colonization and economic, social, and political interactions with the first inhabitants of Arizona. SS-E2 Describe the impact of interactions between people and the natural environment on the development of places and regions in Arizona, including how people have adapted to and modified the environment. ARTS STANDARDS 1AV-E1 Choose the most appropriate media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of one s own ideas and experiences. 1AV-E2 Demonstrate increasing technical ability and skill to complete visual arts assignments.
