Activity 1: Literary Terms to Review: Students will copy definitions of the following terms into their Milestone Packet: Characterization, Mood, Tone, Connotation, Inference, Simile, Denotation Activity 2: The Chaser Students will read The Chaser The Chaser Writing Activity RACE Activity to wrap it up Nonfiction How to Annotate Read KG Article RACE Response & Classroom debate Day 2: Parts of Speech Review: Next section in packet received yesterday. Finish up lesson from Tuesday with The Chaser Literary Terms Review: Connotation Denotation Vocabulary in Context Inference Tone/Mood
3 (Connotation/Denotation activities in Milestone Prep folder if you desire to use them.) Nonfiction Article (KG): Sex of Babies We will read the article together once as a class. Afterwards, students will conduct another reading where they will annotate the article completely, looking for any information they deem especially important or pivotal. Students may use highlighters, pens, etc. to annotate. When they have finished annotating, students will respond to the RACE writing prompts on the bottom of the article, making sure to cite evidence they ve highlighted as support for their argument. Day 3: Bell Ringer: Parts of Speech Packet Review Reading Fiction: The School Teacher will read the story aloud, pausing where it is indicated in the copy of the story. When teacher pauses reading, students will answer questions in the activity. Some questions are comprehension based, inference based, connotation vs. denotation, or vocabulary in context. Additionally, there are writing prompts, both predictive, and narrative. Day 4: **Standards used in this lesson: ELAGSE9-10L1-6 ELAGSE9-10RI1-5, 8, 10 ELAGSE9-10W1, 2, 4, 9, 10 Introduce/Review RACE Acronym for Constructed Responses: R: Restate the question A: Answer the questions C: Cite evidence E: Explain evidence
4 Read Sex of Babies KG article, and have them respond to it using the RACE acronym. Identify grammar elements within the first few sentences of KG article so it remains relevant. Finish any of the missed questions for The Chaser. End the period with debate. Day 5: Bell Ringer: Skills Review Advertisement Analysis: Gun Safety & Lands End Using the packet of advertisements given to them, students will closely analyze the advertisement for gun safety and. As a class, we will discuss the ad, and then students will answer questions that follow with a partner. Drama Review: Comedy Tragedy Modern Drama Theatre of the Absurd Political Drama: A Few Good Men/Manchurian Candidate Excerpts from various plays from each category/clips Day 6: **Standards used in this lesson: ELAGSE9-10L1-6 ELAGSE9-10RI1-5, 8, 10 ELAGSE9-10W1, 2, 4, 9, 10. Day 7:
5 Bell Ringer: Skills Review Poetry Review poetry terms from Shakespeare unit + other poetry terms: -Rhyme Scheme -Iambic Petameter -Meter -Blank Verse -Free Verse -Stanza, quatrain, couplet -Sonnet Using Prologue of Romeo & Juliet, Act II, review elements of Shakespearean sonnets. Analyze Billy Collins poem Students will follow along as teacher reads poem aloud the first time. Then, students will work individually to chart rhyme scheme or label blank verse, label stanzas, and identify literary elements within the poem. RACE response to follow. 6 Bell Ringer: Skills Review Milestone Skills Review Students will be given a list of Milestone skills that have been reviewed in the pullout class, as well as taught in regular class. Students will mark which ones they are still unsure about; going through the list as a class, teacher will review each skill individually, having students take notes on a separate sheet of paper. Day 10: May 10th TBD based upon performance on Milestone practice test/class progress thus far. Students will test during class on this day.
