6 Vocabulary 3.2 Word/part of speech 1. tone (noun) Forms/ Synonym attitude Definition and Sentence Definition: The writer s attitude toward his or her subject. Example: The tone of the speaker in Life Doesn t Frighten Me is fearless.
7 Vocabulary 3.2 Word/part of speech 2. mood (noun) Forms/ Synonym atmosphere Definition and Sentence Definition: The feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for a reader. Example: The overall mood created by Ray Bradbury in All Summer in a Day is gloomy.
8 Vocabulary 3.2 Word/part of speech 3. connotation (noun) Forms/ Synonym Synonym: association Definition and Sentence Definition: Connotation is the idea or feeling associated with a word, as opposed to its dictionary definition. Sentence: The word terrified has a much stronger connotation than the word scared.
9 Vocabulary 3.2 Word/part of speech 4. denotation (noun) Forms/ Synonym Synonym: definition, meaning Definition and Sentence Definition: A word s denotation is its dictionary definition. Sentence: The words home and house have a similar denotation, but a different connotation.
10 Vocabulary 3.2 Word/part of speech 5. author s craft (noun) Forms/ Synonym Synonym: style, technique Definition and Sentence Definition: The author s manner of writing. It involves HOW something is said rather than WHAT is said. Style is how the author uses literary devices to create tone and mood. Sentence: I found the author s craft in The Hobbit to include lots of overly complicated plot details.
11 Select at least 3 tone words that best express the author s attitude. Identifying Tone in Text Read each statement. Decide if the tone is positive, negative, or neutral. Underline details (descriptive words, character s thoughts, character s actions, sensory and figurative language) that help convey tone in the passage.
