When you use a camera it has to decide many setting For example; light may be different in different places, you may have to capture fast moving objects, you may want everything to be in focus or just some things in focus Rather than just using the green fully auto setting on the camera, there are other automatic modes that preset the way the camera records information according to the given situation Some of these settings may include No flash is like the green auto mode but turns off the flash Portrait mode (usually a picture of a person s head) this uses the cameras setting that might typically be best for when you taking pictures of people Sports mode (usually a picture of a moving person)- this uses the cameras setting that might typically be best for when you are taking pictures of moving people or things Landscape mode (usually a picture of mountain) this uses the cameras setting that might typically be best for when you want to take a picture of a scene Night time mode (usually a picture of a person and a star) this uses the cameras setting that might typically be best for when you want to take a picture in dim/night time situations Macro mode(usually a picture of a flower) this uses the cameras setting that might typically be best for when you want to take a picture of something close-up 4

In groups you will be taking some photos and writing a short poem about it You may have to take many photos before you decided which one Use the camera setting most appropriate for what you are taking a photo of The picture should tell a story so think carefully about every detail such as what s going on in the background of the shot. Snappers Tips If you are taking a picture of someone running then switch the mode dial on the camera to the picture of the running person If you are taking a picture of a landscape then switch the mode dial on the camera to the picture of the mountain If you are taking a picture of a person then switch the mode dial on the camera to the picture of the person s head If you are taking a pictures in poor light then switch the mode dial on the camera to the picture of the person and a star If you are taking a picture of something close up then switch the mode dial on the camera to the picture of flower 8/ Choose that photo Look through your photos If you have used the mode dials, notice how: Landscape mode tries to make everything in focus Portrait tries to make the back ground a little more blurry Sports mode tries to make freeze the person or thing that is moving so they are not blurred 5

6 Macro mode allows you to take photos close up and tries to put everything in focus 9/ A picture speaks a thousand words Now you are going to write a poem about the photo you choose, don t worry a picture speaks a thousand words is just an expression. Yours is going to be a short poem Think about the types and features of poems that we looked at today Are you going to make it a narrative, non-sense, fixed poem and are you going to use metaphors, personification and/or rhyming words? You can follow a process of planning, drafting and editing process to improve your work and to sustain your writing Extension activity if time allows Present and discuss Everyone must say something in the presentation Present your poem What did you learn from listening to other group s presentations? 6

7 Homework Try to repeat the process by taking more pictures and applying different types and features that you have learnt about You could make a mini poem book, use ribbon to tie it up at the edges, be sure to make sure the image you have taken is next to the poem. 7
