Book Manuscripts in Progress: CURRENT PROJECTS: The Small Worlds of Childhood in Stifter, Rilke, and Benjamin examines tropes of containment and circumscription in the image of the Kinderstube (children s nursery). This book-length study argues that representations of the spaces of 19 th -century childhood serve as experimental zones for working out the relationship between empirical, everyday experience and synthetic notions such as fantasy, history, or transcendence. I show that these representations of childhood, which are legible primarily as metaphors of containment and circumscription reveal how each author positions these quotidian figures as models for theoretical tensions that reach well beyond domestic life. I show that each articulation of the space of childhood, or Kinderstube, operates as a distinct model for containing epistemological uncertainty (Stifter), for phenomenological investigation as an analogue to poetic production (Rilke), and for an aesthetic project that reframes the representation of history as a dialectic of space (Benjamin). Love Letters: Translating Freundschaft and Frauenliebe between Romanticism and Freud on translation, metaphor, and infelicity, in the poetry and letters of the Droste-Schopenhauer circle. This second book-length study proposes translation as a model for reading and describing ambivalence in representations of female same-sex desire in the first half of the 19 th century. Articles in Progress: Reading and/or Translating: Adele Schopenhauer and Romantic Hermeneutics; Article in Progress (estimated submission Summer 2017) This article will argue for the peculiar status that the act of translation occupies in Romantic thought (Schlegel, Novalis, Schleiermacher). As that which is both distinct from and yet over lapping with notions of reading, writing, and understanding, the Romantic view of the translator s task (both literally and metaphorically) attempts to illuminate what it is that we doing when we read poetic language. The Foundations of Critical Theory (Fall 2015) Graduate seminar surveying philosophical and literary-theoretical texts ranging from the Enlightenment and Romanticism to Marxism and Decadence.
