2 The Martiniere Post (2) April-May, 2014 EDITOR S WORD RAGGING IS NOT A JOKE, IT IS A CRIME Shashwat 12-B Ragging is an act when people senior to you, order you to work on their terms. Ragging is a major issue in our colleges, when senior students exploit their juniors by various means. Beating without any purpose, forcing to consume various drugs, unnecessary increasing work load, sexual harassment, public humiliation are some of the means of ragging at colleges. Both boys and girls have to undergo some sort of ragging at their respective colleges. Their seniors make them clean their rooms, wash clothes, give the assigned work to their juniors and this list is endless. When a person tries to revolt his humiliation, he/she is beaten in the worst possible manner. The saddest part is that when these suffered juniors become seniors to others, they humiliate their juniors in the same way as they were and this vicious cycle goes on. Due to this ragging, several students have opted to commit suicides instead to lead a life. They find death more easy than to live a humiliated life. Many have been psychologically affected and their careers have been destroyed due to ragging at colleges. Mental conditions have been reported due to ragging. Many bright futures have turned into dark due to ragging. To stop ragging, government has announced ragging as a serious crime. Under article 21 of Indian penal code, terms regarding ragging has been included has been included. Many FIRs have been filed against ragging and action are being taken, but still ragging has not been fully stopped. It is still going on in our society, still careers are being destroyed, still students are committing suicides, still.. It s time to get ourselves united and throw ragging completely out of our society. The month of April filled the dorm with a breeze of fear and enthusiasm, the fear of two things: How s the result gonna be? Am I gonna pass? and the night warden appointed to take care of the 1 st dormers. As for the enthusiasm part if they will pass they will be a step above in the seniority table The previous month boys studied like machines day and night, infact they hardly slept! (Raghav never slept more than 4 hours; he studied from midnight till dawn: God knows how he did that!) Finally after returning from the academic break and having a great time at their homes and for someones who went on trips, admiring the beautiful sights at Gangtok, they were all set to face the results on the very next day. The morning of 9 th April brought a smile on almost CAMPUS ROUND UP Neil Richard Innis 12-B every face. Teja Vaish came 1 st in class 8-F, Utkarsh Tripathi came 3 rd in 8-E, Aditya Mishra came 2 nd in 11 Arts, Aditya Agarwal came 5 th in 11-E and Himanshu Pandey came 5 th in PCM section. So there was great enthusiasm in the boarding house as the boarders proved themselves good in academics as well. Meanwhile two new co-curricular activities, horse riding and shooting were introduced in the college which fascinated all. The horses She and Unstoppable caught the eyes of not only the 2rd dormers but also the 1 st dormers who were looking forward to have the first ride of their life! With Mr. McGrath as the new swimming coach there ought to be great improvement in the swimming department as well. How did I forget to mention the population

3 April-May, 2014 (3) The Martiniere Post explosion at Mart? The boarding house has been increased up to 334 Martinians (with class 11 batch yet to come). The boarding house has been in full bloom, the prep rooms, the dining hall, dormitories and even the chapel are filled with children, you can hardly find vacant seats! Afzal and Leander, the tiny pots in the Martin and Cornwallis house respectively have become the favorites of every boy in the campus, even the teachers on duty are fond of them. ANNUAL PRIZE DAY AT LA MARTINIERE COLLEGE, LUCKNOW The Annual Prize Day of La Martiniere College was held on 24 th April,2014.The chief guest was the Honourable Mr Justice Dhananjay Yeshwant Chandrachud. His Lordship was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Kalpana Das Chandrachood.The function started at 6:30 p.m. A Coffee Table book was released. The book has tried to capture the spirit of La Martiniere College over the years. The prizes in the junior school were given out by Mrs Chandrachud and the prizes of the middle and the senior school were given by the Chief Guest. Aditya Chaturvedi was given an award for getting the highest marks in History Class 12 Shashwat 12-B 24th April, 2014 (ISC -2013). Sauhard Srivastava was awarded for getting the highest marks in ICSE Harsh Misra was given the award for securing the highest marks in ISC A number of awards and prizes were given to the students for excellence in academics. The Best scholar award was given to Sauhard Srivastava in the senior school.the Best scholar award in the Middle school was shared by Ayyan Ahmed and Rayyan Ahmed.In the Junior school, Abhigya Talwar was given the Best scholar award. The Cock House Cup was given to Hodson House. The honorable chief guest gave a very inspiring speech for the boys of the school. 4 The Martiniere Post (4) April-May, 2014 PRINCIPAL S CORNER Dear Carlyle, FROM AN OLD MARTINIAN ( ) I got your from my brother Salamat, who was lucky enough to visit Mart and to meet you last month. I myself hope to visit some time and revive my old memories, God willing and health permitting (I am 5 years older than him). Thank you so much for the copy of my Sykes Memorial essay. First thing I would like to ask, are you related to D. McFarland, Cornwallis house, who was two years senior to me? I m not sure of the first name, because as you would know, in those days we addressed each other by the last names only (perhaps they still do, at the Mart). Like me, he was first at Loreto, and then came over to Mart. I remember him well because he was one of the nicer Anglo-Indians (nicer to us, day scholars, I mean ). He became the college captain and was a part of NCC. Old memories stand out, and I can recall Mr. Rodriguez (Rodo) calling out to him, Sergeant Major McFarland! One memory which stands out is our trip to Dehradun for the NCC camp at Jamnipur. The train made a longish stop at Bareilly, where some of the boys had friends and relatives who had come to see them. When they came back to the compartment, McFarland was so excited about a girl he had met and kept telling everyone how nice she was. He also said, I wish I had told her, do you think we have known each other long enough to kiss goodbye? Those were the days of innocence! Sorry to have rambled on. All the success in my professional career has been due to the solid foundation I got at the Mart, and I owe so much to my alma mater. All of my teachers were sources of great inspiration, especially Mrs. Shalom (class 5) and, in the higher classes Mrs. Cummings (History), Rayner and Doutre (English), Flynn DeSouza (Chemistry/Mathematics, they used to alternate between these two subjects). Mr. DeSouza (Douse) was my Housemaster (Martin Housethe reason I gave myself for making blue my favourite colour). On my report cards he used to write, His academic performance is good, but I seldom see him on the playing fields!. Mrs. Shalom was my favourite teacher. She was a wonderful elocutionist and introduced us to Shakespeare and the great classical English poems. Mr. and Mrs. Shalom left for U.K. when I was in class 6. When I met there myself for my Ph.D. and M.Engg degress in the 1960s, I tried to trace them, but was not successful. Since the 1970s, I have been living in USA and now, I am retired. I live in Dublin, California and spend time in writing articles for a community newspaper. The writing abilities which I learnt at Mart (especially from Mr. Rayner) have helped me in this, as they did in the technical papers I wrote and presented during my academic and professional career. I was very happy to see that the school is doing so well under your able leadership. Let the students know how lucky they are to be studying in this great institution. As for me whatever I have achieved in life is because of the days I spent at La Martiniere. I was also very impressed how

The school calendar that you kindly gave me, hangs over my desk and I have my morning coffee in the martin house mug. I hope and pray that I may be able to visit the school once again. MOVIE MASALA PAURUSH- THE GREAT CRICTIC Movie Review : DEDH ISHQIYA The month of January seems to be good beginning for the year 2014 at the box office as there are a number of movies releasing. To begin with we have Sholay 3-D,then the youth oriented movie Yaariyan and a classic Dedh Ishqiya to Salman starrer Jai Ho and finally Abhay Deol s home production One by two giving an end to the month of January. The movie which deserves a mention is Madhuri Dixit s Dedh Ishqiya. The movie is a sequel to the Vidya Balan, Nasseruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi starrer Ishqiya, which won both the hearts of critics and audiences alike. Dedh Ishqiya is an installment to Ishqiya where only Vidya Balan gets replaced by Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi is added. Nasseruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi reprising their roles of Khallan and Babban respectively.the movie is directed by Abhishek Chaubey produced by Vishal Bharadwaj and is all set to hit the theatres on January 10, The movie is entirely different from its predessor and promises to offer something new. The movie begins on a pessimistic note and thrills as the movie progresses. Backed by a strong script, strong dialogues, karizmatic performances and the location of Mahmoodabad palace make the movie is definitely a watch. The cast of the movie is particularly apt for their roles.madhuri Dixit makes an excellent comeback as Begum Para and Huma Qureshi is delightful as Munira. Nasseruddin Shah as Khallan and Arshad Warsi as Babban win the hearts of audiences and critics once again. There are only 2 letdowns in the movie First the editing and secondly the music. The editing of the movie does not make the movie look clean instead it hampers the movie viewing for the audiences. The music of the movie is given by Vishal Bharadwaj is not at all a delight to the ears. This music will hamper the collections of the movie at the box office. Overall, Dedh Ishqiya is a superb movie to watch and should be on your must to do list of January. The movie is a masterpiece and a classic and should not be missed. I would like to rate Review: 2 States...one love The month of April does not seem to have a lineup of big movies. But among these big banners we have Ekta Kapoor s Main Tera Hero starring Varun Dhawan and Illeana D Cruz releasing in the first week of April followed by B.R. Chopra productions Bhootnath Returns starring the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and finally the last big release of the month Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiawala s joint collaboration 2 States starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The movie which should be reviewed among these big ventures is 2 States. The movie which was slated to release to on 18 April has already arrived.the movie is produced by 3 big banners of bol-

6 The Martiniere Post (6) April-May, 2014 lywood-karan Johar s Dharma Production, SiddharthRoy Kapoor s U.T.V. motion pictures and Sajid Nadiawala s Nadiawala Grandson Entertainments. The movie is being directed by a debutante director Abhishek Varman. The movie is based on Chetan Bhagat s novel by the same name. The movie is about 2 IIM graduates from Ahemadabad who after a series of events get romantically involved and decide to get married but because of their cross cultures it becomes tough for them to get married and later a series of events follow their wedding. Arjun Kapoor who plays the role of a Punjabi boy Krish and Alia Bhatt who plays the role of a tamil girl Ananya. Both the lead actors do a superb role as Krish and Ananya and there is a sparkling chemistry that sizzles up this love story. Amrita Singh who plays the role of Krish s mother and Ronit Roy playing the role of Krish s father do a superb job and provide good support to the leads. The movie is not that very well adapted but the movie is certainly the best adaptation of Chetan Bhagat novels till date. The locations of Delhi and Chennai are wonderful and nice. The cinematography, direction, the make-up and the photography are all nice and wonderful. The music is the best music of 2014.The songs Offo, Mast Magan and Locha-e-ulfat are a delight to the ears and have gathered a lot of curiousity among the youth for the movie. Credits for this wonderful music go to the trio Shanker- Ehsaan- Loy. Overall, the movie is very good and deserves atleast one watch and the cinematography, music and story are all good. I would like to give 2 states 4 stars and on a scale of 10 I would like to give FIRST DAY AT SENIOR SCHOOL Shashank 5-G On the 9 th April, all the students of class 4 were promoted to class 5 and brought at the senior school campus. It was a big day for all the students and for me as well. I always wanted to be a part of the senior school. All the boys went to their classes with their new class teachers. I studied seriously on my first day. I met all my new teachers. In the break, I went with my friends exploring the school as much as I could. I saw the huge fields which now we were a part of. Date:-27th April, 2014, Sunday Venue:-East Terrace, La Martiniere College, Lucknow An Evening with Brian Silas On the last Sunday of April we enjoyed an evening filled with melodies. One of the finest Pianist, Brian Silas presented his talent in front of an enthralled audience of around 300 people. The show started with the representation of the old boys association welcoming our Principal, Mr. McFarland. The principal then gave a brief introduction about the evening s performer Mr. Brian Silas. The show started and everyone present over there was mesmerized by his music Mr. Silas played a few oldies followed by a few English numbers. He was accompanied by a few instrumentalists. There were musicians on the guitar and tabla. The show ended with a sumptuous dinner. The people went back home with their minds filled with sweet music and their stomachs with delicious food.

7 April-May, 2014 (7) The Martiniere Post Darjeeling and Gangtok Trip Report Kshitij Gupta 12 C On 2nd April 2014 La Martiniere College organized a trip to Darjeeling and Gangtok for Classes 6 to 11. The trip was scheduled after final examinations before the announcement of the final results. The trip was scheduled for 6 days and despite the unusual delay by the train we managed to reach New Jalpaiguri Railway station at 4:40 AM in the morning. The trip organizer Mr. Deepak Budholia an ex-student of La Martiniere College ferried us to Darjeeling in the jeeps. Our trip was greeted by the majestic sunrise on the serpentine metalled roads of Darjeeling. After checking in our hotel we had a brief resting period followed by an excursion to the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park where we had a chance to see the snow leopard, Black Panther and the rare Red Panda. In the evening we visited the tea garden where we learned the basics of tea curing and collection. In the same evening we moved to the Himalayan town of Gangtok. The wonderful food and hospitality of the Hotel Staff relaxed our minds and after an overnight resting period we moved to the famous Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple near the Nathu La Pass. Being a Chinese Observation Area the photography was heavily restricted and we were advised to keep our mobiles and cameras low. At a height of ft there is an oligotrophic lake known as Tsongmo Lake (Changu Lake locally) which is fed by the melting glaciers of the greater Himalayas. Since the temperature was sub-zero it kept most of the part of the lake frozen which was marked by a thin layer of ice crust on the surface. After a brief stay we began to descend to the Gangtok City. On the next day we went for local sightseeing which included visit to the Buddhist Monastery, Ganesh Tonk and the highest view point in Gangtok. Finally on the morning of 7th of April we reached New Jalpaiguri where we boarded New JalpaiGuri Udaipur Express to reach our homes A BLAST FROM THE PAST
