1 Letter from the President Newsletter June 2017 An Art To-Do List Do you maintain a written To-Do list of art-related ideas including potential subjects, techniques, special effects, topics/themes, scenes/locations, new media experiments, etc.? If not, why not? If so, how diligent are you in continually adding to that list and regularly beginning your next art projects from it? According to German artist Martin Kippenberger, A Good artist has less time than ideas. To these To-Do Lists, perhaps we should append footnotes with new ideas we had or heard about how we might enhance/recreate our existing art work to improve it or make it different. In other words, how might a painter or craftsperson add to or modify an existing painting, or what might a photographer achieve if they keep photographing a subject from more viewpoints with different compositions? As Da Vinci said, Art is never finished, only abandoned. A painter or 3D artist creates art to exploit reflected light, while a photographer creates art using incident light. All visual art is ultimately about or dependent on light. Ironically, it took a musical genius (non-visual artist) Robert Schumann to figuratively state so precisely the creative objective of our To-Do Lists of visual art ideas: To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist. To stimulate our imagination for outside-the-box To-Do s [i.e., outside our portfolios ] we have to lie to ourselves about what our limitations are. We have to grow in thought to reach for ideas that are beyond those we have ever had before. As his works so poignantly demonstrated, Pablo Picasso once said, Art is a lie that makes us realize truth. Let s apply those words far more literally than he may have intended. If we fantasize beyond our current work and write down everything we can dream of doing, we can eliminate from that list only those dreams we choose not to come true. The theme is: Whatever You Wish. Dues Due From the WCAG Board: Annual member dues fund the 501(c)(3) Williamson County Art Guild s mission to promote art in Williamson County. In many cases your WCAG membership dues may be considered as tax-deductible: contributions; or business-expenses. To cover our Season operating costs, the membership dues have been increased slightly to: Family--$40.00; Individual--$35.00; Senior (age 62+)--$25.00; and Full-Time Student--$ The main things member dues are used to pay include: meeting room rental fees, outside guest presenter honoraria, workshop facilitation, bank/accounting/website/postal fees, social event supplies (e.g., library exhibit reception, holiday & year end ice cream events), and complimentary coffee at meetings. We are trying to be financially able to resume charitable contributions (e.g., scholarships and donations to art orgs.) again this next season. Increased membership and 10% contributions of member sales from WCAG exhibits will help us achieve this goal season annual dues can be paid anytime during the period from June 1, May 31, 2018, and apply to this entire season. Application forms and our mailing address are available on the HOME page of our web site Together, in this way, we can enjoy serving as community advocates for the visual arts across Williamson County!
