NUMBER OF DAYS: 2ND 6 WEEKS UNIT NAME SELF-RELIANCE, SURVIVAL, AND TRANSFORMATION: PART 2 Unit Overview Generalizations/Enduring Understandings Concepts Guiding/Essential Questions Learning Targets Self-reliance is integral to a hero and is essential to his/her survival. Major Work: The Odyssey by Homer Writing Focus: Literary Analysis 1. An epic hero goes on a journey and faces obstacles along the way. 2. An epic hero has a tragic flaw that creates challenges for him along his journey. 3. Knowing one s strengths and weaknesses helps one become self-reliant. Survival skills are important in every type of society/situation Analyzing Ancient Greek Literature: Epic Poetry, Archetypes, and the Hero s Journey; Literary Analysis (Tone), Effects of Greek mythology on modern literature 1. What are some characteristics of Ancient Greek Literature? 2. What are some characteristics of an Epic Poem? 3. Does everyone have a tragic flaw? Can it be suppressed? 4. What is self-reliance, and how does it help one overcome obstacles? How has Greek literature influenced contemporary literature? 1. Students will be able to analyze the epic hero s journey and different character archetypes in Ancient Greek Literature. 2. Students will understand that each epic hero has a tragic flaw that creates challenges for him/her along the way of the journey. 3. Students will analyze literary devices such as symbolism, imagery, diction, syntax, figurative language, and irony to distinguish the tone of a passage. 4. Students will use appropriate literary terminology and proper grammatical conventions to craft a written analysis of tone. Students will analyze the effects that Greek mythology has on modern-day dramatic works.
