Describe how the criteria or standards in this assessment tool link to the SLO(s) being assessed: The students wrote an essay based on the question: Do you think after taking the art portion of IS100 you have the skills to assess and compare the creative works of others? (see below) I have learned a lot about art in this class. I have learned about various types of artistic styles, and how each artist is different. In summary, I do have the skills to assess and compare the creative works of others. This course has been fun and interesting. Yes, it was helpful in that it has allowed me to realize how important it is to not only see the artwork but to research and look at the artist s history and what he/she meant the artworks to convey. Also, it is much easier to appreciate art when you understand what previous artworks the artist has done. Yes, I have realized how much work goes into each piece and respect that more. I would rather not practice art but admire and purchase it for decoration. My perception of art is now more complex thanks to this class. More forms of arts are known to me and makes it easier to assess art by category such [expressism] or minimalism. Before this class I [was] aware of few artists by name, now several are familiar to me. Art is more appreciated once you know how to assess it in a meaningful way. This class was useful in giving me some vocabulary to use when discussing art. The project was also very enjoyable and beneficial in giving me a bit of experience of what it takes to make a piece of art, although only the physical aspect of course, as the mental and emotional part was already done by the original artists. Mainly, I enjoyed discovering artists and art works and getting a better understanding of which art appeals to me and why. After taking the art portion of this course, I feel confident that I have the skills to assess and compare creative works of others. This class has given me the skills to view art in way I have never known before. After taking this portion of the course I appreciate art more and use everything I have learned in this class to actually enjoy the piece instead of just seeing it as art. This class has also shown me artists that I find really interesting and pieces that I would want to go see in person that were not at the SFMOMA. I am glad to have taken this course because I really enjoyed the art portion and bummed out that it s ending. I believe that I have learned a lot from this class on identifying different artists and getting the feel of what different movements are. This class was very enjoyable and gave a lot of insight to the art world. It has opened a new door of interest for me and to be able to connect with the pieces and understand why someone may have drawn or painted. Although the art project for the SFMOMA assignment was really difficult for me, it gave me a good

2 perspective on how difficult it is to produce these easy looking art works. I enjoyed being able to explain what I thought about the art pieces at SFMOMA in a way that was educated and informed, not just guessing at what things were supposed to represent & mean. In a way, I think I have acquired some of the skills needed to assess and analyze art. Now that I have learned some of the different art movements such as impressionism, expressionism, and pop art, I feel I can use conceptual analysis to describe each piece of art. I still might have some trouble figuring out the meaning of an art piece, but Art 100 made me realized that not all art pieces are created the same; each one is made differently with a unique message behind each of them. I am glad for this opportunity to see art in a different light. I feel like I am more knowledgeable when looking at pieces in museums. Yes, because I know more about how art is, the different types, and that there is more to it than just a picture. Yes, but only so. At MOMA there were many pieces of which I thought I understand, but there was an equal amount of pieces that I could not even slightly figure out. It seems that, especially with modern art, the basis of where the artist is coming from is vital in assessing art. This skill appears to only come with time and experience. Yes, though I can t be certain how much of it was the class s doing and how much was a result of my own breakthrough. I do feel that I have a better understanding of art and art criticism. Yes, I believe I do. When first walked into this class, I felt that Art had to have a certain look and feel. However, now when I walk into the local supermarket I cannot but imagine how each item can be turned into a piece of art with only as little a thing as my intention for it to be. I learned so much more than before I went through the art portion. Before, I would just look at an art piece and make a decision on whether I like it or not based on if I think it looks petty or not. However, after learning how to assess art, I am confident on being able to assess and compare works in a different light, not based on whether I think it is pretty or not. I can now see the meaning behind each piece more clearly. Yes, definitely, this class has enhanced my art vocabulary. Having been exposed to various artists and art forms has expanded my mind and made me more receptive of concepts and ideas that are different than mine or what I thought was normal. I have enjoyed the class discussions and listening to other perspectives. I am much more aware of my surroundings. Yes, when I first enrolled in the class, I had no clue about the art movements and the artists. While in class, I have learned the basic knowledge and skills on how to recognize art. Also I was able to differentiate which artist an art piece belongs to and its movement. It was a great experience to actually go to an art museum. I was able to recognize the art pieces in the museum. I would suggest to have group field trips. I think that would have a different experience for students. Yes, I now have a better understanding of how to contextually analyze a piece of art work. I also have a larger artistic vocabulary and have been exposed to a broader array of art works. No Yes, because initially when I was told we had go to an art museum, I thought to myself all I knew about art really was if something looked pretty or not and works of DaVinci, Andy Warhol and Diego Rivera. After taking this class, I was able to identify more works of art from other artists and the concept or idea they were trying to portray. Yes, and no. The majority of the terminology I already knew and knew how to apply. During lectures the definitions of a lot of the works were hard to find, not defined, or skipped over so quickly on slides notes that were really impossible to keep up with. I think after hearing some of the context and intent behind some of the artwork was especially useful (even more so when they were pieces you could visit at MOMA.) In general, I believe if you know why you dislike or like a piece of artwork and can back it up with more than just It s ugly or I love the colour blue you re more or less capable of being able to assess other people s artwork. You re even better off if you yourself are a creative person in a way because you can understand the process and effect that goes into making something and believing it worthy enough to be shared with everyone else. In a way doing the art with oil pastels for the MOMA project shed a little more light on the artist s intent. I know for myself I chose a particularly complicated piece of art with different shapes and blending layers and lots of little tiny details. And after spending so much time staring back and forth from a postcard to the drawing I was doing, it gave me a new appreciation for what that particular artist went through to get that final piece of work the way he wanted. I may not have found that respect if I had not been asked to recreate someone else s work using a medium I have never enjoyed working with (I have a hatred of oil pastels.) I don t think though that being just a college student who dabbles in art puts me on a level where I can be assessing others art properly. But that is no mistake from the class. Yes, I think I do. I think so because now I can assess art formally and contextually. This class taught me to appreciate all types of art works, I have appreciation for art.

3 Yes, I do feel that I have the skills to assess and compare the creative works of others because I learned more about what is considered art and how you can analyze it with knowledge. Yes, because I am more skilled in recognizing the creative process behind how art is conceptualized and created. I believe that I do have the skills to assess and compare the creative works of others because this class has exposed me to many different movements of art, and what the meanings behind them are. The class has had good contexts of many art pieces and all those ideas are valuable because they all are seen from different perspective. This class has opened my eyes in how I see art because of all the different views that were discussed in class. I think that I have learned enough in this portion of the class to have an educated conversation with someone about an art piece. I have learned some new art lingo, and can also identify pieces of work and who the artist is. I would like to think so. As a kid, my uncle used to take to all sorts of art museums and I hated it. As I got a bit older, I started to appreciate it more, but never really thought about the process or what the pieces meant. This past Sunday, when I went to SFMOMA, I really looked at the pieces and tried to understand them. I felt like I got a lot more out of it. I am in no way a professional now, but I do feel that I can appreciate more types of art now. So, thank you. Yes, art has taught me that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that different people have different perspectives on different ideas. I can compare the differences of art pieces, however, I feel that I don t really have the experience to judge someone s work because I, myself, don t have the ability to recreate that sort of work. Yes, I feel like I can critique art by the knowledge that I have gained from taking this class. IS100 had discussed the various types of art and gave me an understanding in the unique styles that artists used in their paintings. I think it provides a good starting point. Now when I look at Work of Art, I sort of have an idea what I m looking even if I don t fully understand it. Knowing the period in which it was created also helps with the meaning behind the work, but the meaning of each of the periods is still a little confusing. Yes, when I went to SFMOMA I felt like I already seen some pieces before. I was familiar with art styles. You were great. Yes, though I had a great idea of what skills are necessary for an art piece to be considered great art. I also feel that comparing creative works is accessible to me. I know art is going to be part of life and knowing these skills will be greatly needed through my life. But one thing I raise the question is that how do people compare one piece to another, I am still baffled about. Yes, I now it is your history within the art community but what/how/why people can do so, specially the fact that conceptually and [tensionally] may be so different. You ve taught me of the elements of design and how to become more innate with my work, but there is this moment of what to edit, is what I must work on and more of my skills. I really want to branch out even more into the Art field. I just want to learn more. Please let me know if you have any other classes you are teaching because I feel I have grown as an artist. Thank you. Yes, we did a lot of assessment and comparison of famous artists and their artwork during class time as a class. So with the practice we had as a class has helped me feel more comfortable and familiar with art. Also we learned a lot about how to formally analyze art, so looking at a piece I don t understand then looking at it with the formalities can help me get a deeper meaning of the artwork. We also learned that sometimes research is necessary to understanding a piece of work. The fieldtrip to the museum was also an application of using our skills we learned in class of how to assess and compare the creative works of others. Yes, because I learned a lot in this class, I even noticed myself formerly analyzing art in my personal life. I went to a mission in So. Cal., Mission San Luis Obispo, and they had cool art painted on the walls. And on the corners of the walls they painted colors, but they didn t paint them flat; they pained them with line that created the optical illusion of a 3D image. Yes, it helps me understand more about art. Yes and No. Yes, because I now know how to formally and contextually analyze something. I know that every piece has this process and history behind it. No, because I still have my biases and do not think a toilet in a museum is considered art. Yes, I do believe that after taking the art portion of this course that I can accomplish this. The lecture notes were helpful. I would just say slow down a little so you can give us time to write down about the slide and not go too fast. That way we can get the material down and feel more comfortable when going to a museum full of this art that we learned about in class. Yes, I do because we have learned how to look at different art pieces in many different ways. We have learned different aspects of different kinds of art and some of the meanings that coincide with different elements in the pieces. Yes, because I formed a better understanding of what Art really is. I am not going to just look at some ugly art and not think about it. I can analyze art more than before.

4 Yes, I believe that this course has taught me enough about the different movements and meaning behind each. It is a lot easier for me to look at Jackson Pollock, for example, and understand where the artist is coming from. Yes, I believe I can assess and compare the creative works of others but only to a certain extent. I believe that only 5-6 weeks of studying artists and how to analyze different forms of artwork does not provide sufficient merit in itself, in comparison with other who may have years of study behind them. However, I believe I will be more open-minded about attending museum exhibits or going to go see certain art work. I will feel more comfortable being much more knowledgeable about what I might be looking at/analyzing. I believe I could with limited skills. I do understand a lot more about art, however, I believe I need to be exposed to more art before I can make comparisons. Yes, now when I see a piece of art, the first thing that comes into mind is what it means and how that meaning is conveyed. Formal analysis also helps figure all of this art. I would say yes and that was shown when I went to FMOMA. I kept getting excited because I could recognize pieces or artists we had covered in class and felt knowledgeable about the work I had seen. I ve never really felt that way in a museum before, so I would say this class helped with that. No. I feel that the class was far too short to learn and understand these skills. It has, however, deepened my understanding and appreciation of art. I think I do. I m still not sure about why some art is considered great when it is so simple and easy to do. I guess just having the idea of it is good enough. Additionally, students were to experience making art and stating their intentions to have the experience of what it is to make art and have their own work critiqued and analyzed. (see below)

15 7. By looking holistically at the results from all students, describe your findings: I am very pleased with the level of growth of the students. The written work and the art work both show a level of sophistication of understanding how to assess and critique work, the students have the skills necessary to appreciate and participate in a variety of cultural events, identify major art movements/periods in art assess and compare creative works of others and evaluate artistic works. 8.
