2 Name: Skills Analysis Symbolism SYMBOL: An item that represents or stands for something else; an object that has a double meaning. A symbol could also be a person, quote, place, color, conflict, etc. In a poem, symbols often point out the theme. For example, in The Lion King there is a prominent theme of good v. evil. One way the theme of good is symbolized in contrast with evil is in the color of the lions. Simba and the lions of his pride are all lightly and brightly colored, while Scar and his hyenas are dark, or black. DETERMINE one theme in the poem, and then consider what the poem does to develop that theme with symbols. Write those symbols in the circles below, and then explain how that symbol is representative of the theme you chose. Poem Theme
3 Name: Across Texts Many times multiple texts will share similar themes, only the writers of the text will choose different approaches to develop that theme. In this exercise, you will determine central ideas or themes of a text, analyze their development, and summarize the key supporting details and ideas. Read the two texts and then complete the following graphic organizer to find parallels in the two texts. Summarize the Two Texts Poem #1 Poem #2 Theme Across Texts Shared Theme/Central Idea: Techniques in Poem #1 to Convey Theme: Techniques in Poem #2 to Convey Theme: Evaluate the two texts. Which text has a more effective approach in conveying the theme and why? Write a brief paragraph to explain.

6 Name: Compare & Contrast Consider content, structure, figurative language, tone, theme, irony, diction, imagery and symbolism. Write a brief paragraph explaining why these poems were presenting to you as a pairing. Base your paragraph on your findings from above and consider the theme of the poems as well.
7 Name: Skills Analysis MOOD Write the overarching mood of this passage in the cloud. The mood is set by using carefully selected tools such as imagery, dialogue, setting, conflict, and diction. In the rain drops, cite examples from the text where the author s choices of mood are evident. Include a textual example, and say what tool that citation is an example of in the drops below. Poem: Poet: Example #2 Example #1 Example #3 Constructed Response: Poets have many tools in their toolbox to convey theme, characterization, mood, etc. such as symbolism, figurative language, diction, imagery, rhyme, and structure. 9 Name: Poetry Analysis IMAGERY Respond to the poem by choosing one line of imagery that stands out in the poem as the most significant moment in relation to the poem s central meaning. In the space below, illustrate the line you choose. Poem Theme Line of Significance (Imagery)
10 Name: Poetry Analysis Questions Write in complete sentences and cite from the text to support your responses. Paraphrase the poem. Who is the speaker (persona) in the poem? How would you describe this persona? What is the speaker s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem? What images (or figurative language devices) does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem? Consider the title. Is it literal or figurative? What is significant about the title of the poem? What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence?
11 Name: Close Reading Cut and paste your poem on the left side and annotate as you close read the poem using the suggestions to the right. Guided Annotations: 1) Paraphrase the poem by writing a short summarizing phrase beside each stanza. 2) Circle words and phrases that indicate setting. What mood does that setting create? 3) What unfamiliar words do you need to look up? Highlight them and write a short definition in the margin. 4) Highlight a couple examples of figurative language. Label them. Why might the poet have chosen these certain ones? 5) What do we know about the speaker. Underline words and phrases that paint a picture of this person. 6) What is the structure of the poem? Note the rhyme scheme, and then decide if the structure offers and support for the meaning. 7) What is the central idea of the poem? Draw a square around any words, images, ideas that repeat in order to help you determine the theme.
