1 Bonham ISD English II Lesson Planner Unit 1: Classical Literature Time Frame: 6 Weeks Objectives Skills: The student will be able to.. Literary Anaylsis: Compare/contrast similar themes in different genres Analyze the influence of mythic and classical literature on 20th and 21st century literature Relate the figurative language of a literary work to its historical/cultural setting Analyze the effects of diction and imagery in poetry Analyze author s purpose, characterization, and theme Analyze diction and tone; analyze imagery and figurative language TEKS 1A-E, 2A- C, 4, 5A-D, 7, 9A, 9C, 12A-B, 14C, 15A, 17A-C, 18A-B, 19, 24A-C, 26 Reading: Develop an understanding of translations of literature from non-english languages Analyze and compare linear and non-linear plot development Analyze how narrative point-of-view shapes a work of fiction Analyze various literary structural patterns Develop active reading and comprehension skills Synthesize ideas and connect texts Writing and Grammar: Write an analytical essay Use and understand more complex active and passive tenses and verbals Use restrictive and nonrestrictive relative clauses Use reciprocal pronouns Identify and use the subjunctive mood Understand and use compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences Use conventions of capitalization and punctuation Spell correctly Vocabulary: Identify technical and academic words & their Greek/Latin/etc. roots Analyze context to distinguish between denotative/connotative meanings Infer word meaning through analogies and other word relationships Identify relationship between origins/meaning of foreign words/phrases used in English Use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus Media Literacy: Analyze how words, images, graphics, and sounds impact meaning Evaluate how messages in media reflect social & cultural views differently from traditional texts Listening and Speaking: Develop protocols and expectations for working in groups Speak clearly, demonstrating understanding of textural structures and conventions
2 Lesson Information Activities 1 st week: Introduction/Reading Introduction to classroom procedures, rules, and expectations Administrative procedures/school paperwork Introduce Blackboard (LMS) class setup Discuss procedures for summer reading assignments and collect work from students who have finished it Review, model, and practice close reading, annotation, and note-taking skills as well as creating Level 1, 2, & 3 questions. Read Harrison Bergeron to connect with both dystopian fiction from English I and theme of resistance to authority in preparation for Antigone. Teach and model active reading, analysis, and annotation. Use this text to show examples of literary elements. Create Level 1, 2, & 3 questions based on reading. 2 nd week: Reading/Writing Finish reading and analysis of Harrison Bergeron. Practice active reading, annotation, identification of literary elements, and analysis. Watch short film 2081 (based on Harrison Bergeron ), taking notes on how the methods of storytelling differ between it and the original text. Review essay writing rubric and work in groups to create student-worded versions. Tone Imagery Motif 3 rd week: Reading/Writing Read Antigone: The Cultural Work of Tragedy for context to Antigone and to identify literary summary. Read Tragedy and Democratic Ideology: The Case of Sophocles Antigone and identify literary critique. Create graphics (Venn Diagram) to show differences between summary and critique Read selection from Aristotle s Poetics for cultural background on tragedy. Introduce drama terms and elements of tragedy in preparation for reading Antigone. Begin reading Antigone, with focus on conventions of drama. Annotate and take close reading notes on specific scenes/pages. Summary vs. critique graphic Bellringer check 4 th week: Reading/Writing Continue the study of Antigone, with focus on figurative language, imagery, mood, and characterization.
