Explain the effects of: sound, form, figurative language and graphics. That descriptive language and word choice effects the sound, flow and meaning of a piece of literature. Essential Questions 1. How do literary devices effect the rhythm, flow and tone of a piece of literature? 2. How does figurative or descriptive language effect the rhythm, flow and tone of a piece of literature? 3. What are the basic literary devices and elements of figurative language that effect the rhythm, flow and tone of a piece of literature? 4. How does the rhyme scheme effect meter or rhythm? 5. How does form effect rhythm and tone? 3 ASSESSMENTS Informal: Observation by teacher of activities and reading. Selected Response: quizzes, activities to practice identification of literary devices. Constructed Response: activities that require students to create own examples of literary devices Performance Assessment (Authentic Use): Summative Assessment (GRASPS) Goal: Present an original or memorized monologue, poem or speech to the class demonstrating the correct rhythm, flow and meter. Role: Student is a presenter at a talent show or debate. Audience: Other 7 th grade students Situation: You have been asked to create a monologue, poem or speech to present to the class that demonstrates literary devices that effect sound, flow and form. You will present this aloud. Product: monologue, speech, or poem to be performed for the class. Standards/Criteria: Student must present a memorized version of a poem, monologue, soliloquy, or speech that includes figurative language, literary devices such as alliteration, onomatopoeias, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme scheme, etc. Student must present in a way that demonstrates an understanding of rhythm and flow as well as tone. An accompanying form must be completed that identifies the piece, the author, the rhyme scheme (if applicable), and any literary devices that appear in the piece.
