2 We have 37 days before the exam Please, please, please be taking time OUTSIDE of class to study and prep for this exam. It is critical that you do this! You will be SO glad you did, when you see your score in July! Be in class EVERY DAY from now to until 5/8. Study the Quizlet cards on Classroom (strong verbs, tone words, lit terms, etc.) Use the links on Classroom to practice at least a few M/C questions each day. Sign up for Albert. There are many ways you can use the site FOR FREE to practice. (Link is on Classroom.) Ask me for copies of AP Lit study guides for extra practice. Come in for the exam prep sessions on Tues 4/10 and Thurs 4/12 for some intensive and helpful prep.

3 SOME TERMS TO JOT DOWN blank verse: poetic verse that doesn t rhyme but has a definite meter (usually iambic pentameter) terza rima poetry arranged in lines of three that rhyme free verse poetry with out rhyme or a definite meter

4 POETRY MATERIALS If you missed class today, make sure you pick up all the poetry handouts I gave out. These will be extremely useful in your prep for the test. PURPLE sheet all the different tools we ve covered this year to figure out a poem. Most likely, you use a combination of several. The BIG 3 tool is especially important. When you walk into the exam 5/9, you ll be bringing a big toolbox with you these are your poetry tools.

5 POETRY ESSAY ONE PAGER Writing the poetry essay is much like writing the prose essay. You will still need to focus on the heart of the prompt AND discuss how the writer creates meaning through devices. The only big differences are: 1. You analyze a poem instead of an excerpt from a short story or novel. 2. You will use language for poetry, such as: speaker, poet, and specific poetic devices, like enjambment, end-stop, meter, rhyme scheme, etc.

6 POETRY ESSAY ONE PAGER Take 2-3 minutes to read the prompt carefully. Figure out and then underline the heart of the prompt write it somewhere on the page. The heart of the prompt is the part of the prompt that connects to meaning. Let s look at examples on the next slide.

7 HEART OF THE PROMPT 1982 The Groundhog - Write an essay in which you analyze how the language of the poem reflects the changing perception and emotions of the speaker as he considers the metamorphosis of the dead groundhog. Develop your essay with specific references to the text of the poem. Heart of the prompt= what are the changing perceptions and emotions of the speaker as he considers the metamorphosis of the dead groundhog? Somewhere on the paper, before I even read the poem, I m going to write down: speaker s changing perceptions = speaker s changing emotions = THEN, I will fill in these statements before I choose devices.

8 HEART OF THE PROMPT 1982 The Groundhog - Write an essay in which you analyze how the language of the poem reflects the changing perception and emotions of the speaker as he considers the metamorphosis of the dead groundhog. Develop your essay with specific references to the text of the poem. Once I ve filled in the heart of the prompt statement, and chosen devices, I will use those to write my thesis. In Richard Eberhart s poem, The Groundhog, the speaker undergoes a transformation as he ponders the metamorphosis of a dead groundhog; Eberhart uses imagery, tone, and metaphor to illustrate the speaker s initial shock and disgust then quiet reverence for the groundhog and what he represents.

9 HEART OF THE PROMPT 1982 The Groundhog - Write an essay in which you analyze how the language of the poem reflects the changing perception and emotions of the speaker as he considers the metamorphosis of the dead groundhog. Develop your essay with specific references to the text of the poem. THEN, when I write my essay, I will have a paragraph which discusses the speaker s disgust (and how that s conveyed using all three devices imagery, tone, and metaphor. THEN, a paragraph that discusses the transformation to reverence using all three devices again.

10 HEART OF THE PROMPT 1983 Clocks and Lovers (W.H. Auden) Write a well-organized essay in which you contrast the attitude of the clocks with that of the lovers. Through careful analysis of the language and imagery, show how this contrast is important to the meaning of the poem. Heart of the prompt = 1. Attitude of the clocks = 2. Attitude of the lovers = 3. How does contrast affect meaning? = THEN choose devices. Organize paragraphs by clocks, lovers, and contrast.

11 HEART OF THE PROMPT 2011 A Story (Li-Young Lee) The following poem is by the contemporary poet Li- Young Lee. Read the poem carefully. Then write a well-developed essay in which you analyze how the poet conveys the complex relationship of the father and the son through the use of literary devices such as point of view and structure. Heart of the prompt = the relationship between the father and son = Then choose devices. Organize by characteristics.

12 FOR NEXT CLASS Finish planning the essay and writing a thesis for the poem Clocks and Lovers and then do the same for the poem called A Story. Bring those with you to class on Weds. The 2012 M/C test needs to be completed and WITH YOU next class. Exam prep (Try to get in 15 minutes!)
