3 Fifth Grade (Level S) Brave Irene by William Steig Mrs. Bobbin, the dressmaker, was tired and had a bad headache, but she still sewed the last part of the gown she was making. It s the most beautiful dress in the whole world! said her daughter, Irene. The duchess will love it. It is nice, her mother said. But, honey, it s for tonight s ball, and I am too tired to bring it. I feel sick. Poor Mama, said Irene. I can get it there! No, cupcake, I can t let you, said Mrs. Bobbin. Such a big package, and it s such a long way to the palace. And, it s starting to snow. But I love snow, Irene said. She coaxed her mother into bed, covered her with two blankets, and added a blanket for her feet. Then she made her some tea with lemon and honey and put more wood in the stove. Irene put on her boots, her red hat, her coat, and her mittens. She kissed her mother s hot head six times, made sure she was tucked in, and slipped out with the big box, shutting the door behind her. By the time she got there, the snow was up to her ankles and the wind was worse. Cold snow fell into her boots and made her feet cold. She kept going. This was an important trip. The wind decided to put on a show. Branches flew from the trees. Irene turned around and walked backwards.

4 Go home! the wind yelled. Irene go hooooooome I will not, she yelled. No such thing, you bad wind! Then the box was taken from her hands and sent falling along the snow. Irene went after it. She ran after and jumped on the box, but the wind took the gown out and it went flying away. Irene hung on to the empty box and watched the beautiful gown disappear. How could anything so wrong be allowed to happen? Tears froze on her lashes. Irene decided she would have to go on with just the box and tell everything in person. Suddenly Irene stepped in a hole and fell over with a twisted ankle. She blamed it on the wind. Keep quiet! she yelled. You have ruined everything! Everything! The wind ignored her. She plowed on, dragging her sore foot. It was dark. Soon night took over. She was cold and alone in the middle of nowhere. Irene was lost. The snow was getting higher and higher. She was thinking how long a small person could keep this up, when she realized it was getting lighter. There was a light coming from below her. She walked toward this light, and soon was looking down at a mansion. It had to be the palace! Irene pushed with all her might and --- sloosh! thwump!---- she was buried. She had fallen off a little hill and was under the snow. Even if she could call for help, no one would hear her. Her body shook. Her teeth shook. Why not freeze to death, she thought, and let all these hard times end. Why not? She was already buried. And never see her mother s face again? With one big push, she flung her body out of the hole and was finally able to climb up on her knees and look around. She laid the box down and climbed on like a sled.

5 The time had come to tell the bad news to the duchess. With the empty box held to her chest, Irene walked to the palace. But then her feet stopped and her mouth fell open. She stared. Maybe this was impossible, but there it was, stuck at the bottom of a tree the beautiful ball gown! The wind was holding it there. She managed to get the gown off the tree and back in its box. She knocked on the door. The door opened and she rushed in. She was welcomed by cheering servants and a happy duchess. They couldn t believe she had come over the mountain in such a bad storm, all by herself. She had to tell the story, every part. And she did. Then she asked to be taken right back to her sick mother. But they said no; the road that ran around the mountain wouldn t be cleared till morning. Irene was given a good dinner as she sat by the fire, drying her clothes. The duchess got into her freshly ironed gown before the guests got there. The next morning, when the snow had stopped, Mrs. Bobbin woke up. She hurried to get a fire going in the cold stove. Then she went to check on Irene. But Irene s bed was empty! She ran to the window and looked at the white land. No one out there. When she opened the door, a wall of snow faced her. But looking over it, she could see a horse-drawn sleigh hurrying up the path. And seated on the sleigh, between two big me, was Irene herself, asleep but smiling. Would you like to hear the rest? Well, there was a doctor in the back of the sleigh. And the duchess had sent Irene s mother a ginger cake with white icing, some oranges and a pineapple, and spice candy of many flavors, along with a note saying how much she loved her gown, and what a brave and loving person Irene was. Which, of course, Mrs. Bobbin knew. Better than the duchess.
