On the Page 14 of 20

15 morning before the story opens, Mother Wolf was making breakfast for her son. "Breakfast is ready! Ham and eggs, your father's favorite," she called. "But Mom," the young wolf protested. "Don't you 'but Mom' me. I have been up for a dreadful amount of time slaving over this breakfast. It's delicious. Now sit down and eat." Jeremiah slumped into his chair and pushed the food around on his plate. He created a little smiley face out of the eggs. The ham he just scooted over to the side. "Don't play with your food, Jeremiah," Mother Wolf chastised. "Whatever will I do with you? You won't eat. You won't chase prey. You won't even wrestle with the other wolves in the neighborhood." Jeremiah just sat there staring at his food, feeling her disappointment. "I just don't understand you," she continued. "Either you start hunting today and bring back fresh meat for supper, or I'm going to inform your father." Jeremiah sighed heavily and rolled his eyes. "May I be excused?" he groaned. His plateful of food remained uneaten. "Humph," said Mother, and she stormed out of the room. Jeremiah departed from the breakfast table and went outside, puzzling over how he could get some poor defenseless animal to voluntarily leap into his paws. It just wasn't in his nature to chase and capture. As he walked along contemplating his dilemma, he met three little pigs. Now, most everyone has heard the rest of the story, but they have only heard one side of it-- the side told by Jeremiah's' mother, who, of course, wanted everyone to believe her son was big and bad. Well, here's what really happened... Jeremiah met the three pigs while they were building their wooden house. Yes, their house. Just one. The houses of straw and brick were lies that Mrs. Wolf concocted to make her son sound more heroic. As Jeremiah approached, he could see that two of the pigs were struggling to hold up the wood with their tiny hooves while the third hammered the wood in place. "Let me help," said the wolf, and he began to help the pigs build their wooden house. At supper time, Jeremiah still had not returned home. Mother Wolf went around the neighborhood looking for him. When she approached the pigs' new house, she heard laughter coming from inside. She peered in the windows. Surprise! The wolf was sitting at the table playing cards with the pigs. "Jeremiah, I told you never to play with your food," Mother Wolf scolded as she threw open the door. Page 15 of 20

17 I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretch'd in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
