8 PAPER 1 (1) Dear Grandma, SET 1 How are you? I had a great time taking you and grandpa around Singapore when you visited last December. Since you left, I ve been busy with my schoolwork. It has been really tiring but I ll be able to take a good break next week when I celebrate my birthday with my friends. Since my birthday is on a weekday this year, I ll be having the celebration on 12 November. For the first time, I ll be having an outdoor celebration. It ll also be held over a longer time than any of my other celebrations. The celebrations start at 10 am and end at 9 pm! It ll be held at the new aquarium and the water park at Sentosa. I cannot wait to go there! I ve heard many good reviews about the places. My friends and I will be able to admire the beautiful fish at the aquarium and go on all the thrilling water rides at the park. Mum has allowed me to have a buffet dinner with my friends at a famous restaurant beside the water park. I ll get to eat my favourite seafood! I ve already prepared the invitation card for my friends. I ll be meeting them at the Sentosa Express Ticketing Booth and we will take the Sentosa Express to Sentosa. Mum says that since this is the first outdoor celebration, I must make sure that my friends get their parents permission. I can t wait for the celebration next week! I ll write soon to tell you all about it! Love, Kieran (2) I let out a voluminous sigh and turned the page of my Science textbook. My eyes were getting blurry and I wished that I did not have to study for the examinations. However, my parents had gone to Malaysia for a few days and I had promised them that I would study hard after school every afternoon. To keep myself awake, I decided to listen to music. I was about to reach for my MP3 player when I heard a loud crash. It resounded throughout the entire house. Jumping up from my seat, I dashed out of my room. Stepping out of my room, I saw my older brother, Matthew, run out of the front door. Matt! Where are you going? I called out, but he ignored me. In a flash, he had disappeared around the corner. Right Before The Exam PSLE English A1 Set 1 Without a second thought, I rushed out of the house to see if I could find out where Matthew had gone. However, he was nowhere to be seen. Scratching my head in bewilderment, I made my way back to the house. Just then, I remembered the loud crash I had heard earlier. Scanning the living room, I noticed that one of the windows was open. We seldom opened that window. When I walked closer, I was stunned to see that my mother s favourite crystal glass was no longer on the coffee table. It had shattered a distance away, near the kitchen. At that moment, Matthew ran back into the house. He was panting and beads of sweat were dripping down his forehead. Squatting to catch his breath, he motioned for me to get the phone. When I did, he immediately called the police. I stared at him, dumbfounded. From what he said on the phone, I gathered that a burglar had entered our house, but Matthew had heard him and chased him out of the house and down the street. He lost sight of him a short distance away. I shook my head in disbelief. I could not believe that anyone would have the audacity to burgle a place in broad daylight. When the police arrived, I listened intently as Matthew recounted what had happened to one of the officers. He was getting a drink from the kitchen when he heard a sound coming from the living room. A stranger in a black T-shirt, black pants and dark grey cap was stealing money from a drawer. When Matthew yelled at him, he was so startled that he grabbed the vase and threw it at him. After stuffing all the money into his pocket, he flung open the front door and ran out of the house. The police officers told us to search the rest of the house to check if anything else was missing. To our relief, only the three hundred dollars in the drawer was gone. Everything else was intact. We decided not to inform our parents about the burglary until they returned from their trip since no one was hurt. However, we did keep all the doors and windows tightly locked from that day onwards. PAPER 2 1 (3) 2 (4) Notes Some verbs are followed by nouns in the ing form. These include verbs related to likes and dislikes such as detest, dislike, hate, enjoy, like, love and fancy.
