1 Mountain-Ear January A Non-Profit Organization for Retired Men Devoted to the Promotion of Independence and Dignity of Retirement branch154.sirinc2.org Big SIR s Corner: Doug Lathrop Happy New Year to all Sirs! Hope you all enjoyed the Holiday Season! Thanks to all of you who were able to attend our Christmas Party. I think everyone had a good time; with good food, good service and good friends. As your new Big Sir I will do my best to do as good a job as our past Big Sir s. Once again I would like to extend my appreciation to Gary Mahon for all his hard work as Big Sir last year and welcome aboard John Googins as our new Little SIR. I would also like to thank Jim Matthews for all the wonderful things he has done for Branch 154 over the years. Jim has elected to step down from his position as director, but I m sure he will continue to add value to our branch! We are looking forward to a wonderful New Year. Among our key goals for this year are to bring in more members from our local community and to entice the members we do have to participate in our luncheons, special events and activities. Our meeting attendance is typically around 50% of our membership which would indicate that we need to do a better job of entertaining you, with better speakers, better entertainment and more activities (including couples activities), not to mention a few new faces and people to talk to. We will be looking to you for feedback on what you think we need to change, what activities you all would be interested in, and what kind of speakers and entertainment you would like to see. We will also be looking for your help in introducing your friends to Sons in Retirement and, for those who are so inclined, stepping up to fill some key roles in the branch. 1

2 Dave Barnett volunteered last year to take over as chair of the Dinner Club on the basis that he would only be doing it for a year. If you are interested in being the new Dinner Club Chairman please let me or Dave know. Last but not least, in order to provide you with top notch entertainment we need to have someone fill the role of Entertainment Chair. The position has been vacant for quite some time and I think you d agree that it shows. None of these positions require a lot of work, only a desire to have fun. I hope to see you at our January 20th Luncheon; 11:00 am at the Mount Shasta Resort followed by our Branch Executive Committee (BEC) meeting. All members are invited to sit in on the BEC meeting and give us an earful if you so desire! I m looking forward to an exciting new year for Mt. Shasta Branch 154! Little SIR Message: Goog Googins Dear Fellow SIRs: As your new Little SIR, I would like me to know a little bit about me. I am a retired locomotive engineer with 37 years of service with SP then UPRR having worked out of Dunsmuir. I have been an avid whitewater kayaker / rafter throughout my adult life including three trips through the Grand Canyon. I was involved with televising local high school and community college sporting events on local TV outlets as a sportscaster from the early nineties up until my retirement in I continue to float the rivers, enjoy collecting and operating toy trains and my involvement in SIR's organization. And now, what you ve been waiting for, it s your. Little Sir's Message Happy New Year to all you fine Sirs. I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas Holiday Season and enjoyed the Sirs Christmas Party on December 11th. Everyone I've spoken to about the party agreed that it was one of the best events ever hosted by our organization. Special thanks to our outgoing Big Sir Gary Mahon and his wife, Joy, and Incoming Big Sir Doug Lathrop and his wife, Terry, for all the work that went into putting this together. The bag auction was a resounding success. As incoming Little Sir for 2016 I know I have big shoes to fill and I'm hoping for your input to assure that we will continue to have interesting speakers at our monthly luncheons since that is one of my primary functions. Our January luncheon speaker will be Mr. Lee Felcher from the DMV who will update us on all the new rules and regulations going into effect in Future speakers will come from law enforcement, service organizations and maybe we'll hear from the State of Jefferson proponent, Mark Baird. Be sure to let me know of what topics are of interest to you and I'll try to line up speakers that can address those issues. I'm looking forward to the new year as your Little SIR ATTENDANCE We had 78 people in attendance at the December Christmas party. There were 36 members, and 42 visitors. We currently have 73 active members so we were sorry to have 37 of who did not make it. You missed a great party. 2

Humor Section (please contribute if you have a funny, joke, cartoon, video) Well, the last part of this is funny so I am putting it in the humor section. This was forwarded from one of our members. Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. 5

6 HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance, The courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, The commitment out of marriage, The responsibility out of parenthood, The togetherness out of the family, The learning out of education, The service out of patriotism, The Golden Rule from rulers, The nativity scene out of cities, The civility out of behavior, The refinement out of language, The dedication out of employment, The prudence out of spending, The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school. And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!! And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country. Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts! YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN! I'm the life of the party... Even if it lasts until 8 p.m. I'm very good at opening childproof caps... With a hammer. I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying. I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere. I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg. I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps. And, MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND MAY AMERICA BLESS GOD!! 6
