1 Please Pass The Peas! by Terri Young/Mathis Fifty years ago, John F. Kennedy said, "Civility is not a sign of weakness. Please Pass The Peas Please, please, please pass the peas. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. You re welcome, welcome, welcome, now you see. Good manners are a very nice touch! I ask the children for examples of good manners. We then play with "Mr. Peas," which is a green bouncing ball. While sitting in a circle, different activities are performed while singing the song. Toddlers roll the ball to one another. Older children throw the ball to one another. Fourth and fifth graders enjoy playing "hot potato" with "Mr. Peas," while singing the short song several times. Self-esteem comes from acceptance. Children have a deep need to know that they are accepted and loved, no matter what their differences or weaknesses are. Songs such as If You Miss Me From The Back Of The Bus can be used, not only to discuss equality of all races, but to introduce discussions on differences. We are all different, whether it be in size, color, talents, weaknesses and strengths. Yet we share the same needs and feelings. 1

Rapping is considered to be one of the types of hip-hop music. Hip-hop music is a type of music where lyrics are put together in a rhyming rhythm, then spoken while musical instruments are played in the background. Rapping follows the same pattern. The lyrics have been increasingly explicit in the past four decades, with references to sex, drug and violence. Rap music can be used to convey positive messages as well. It was time for them to have their own homes. Their mama gave them advice, She said, Do the job right! Cause there s a wolf lurking by, who thinks you d taste mighty nice! The first little pig made a house out of straw. He threw it together in no time at all. Little pig, little pig, won t you let me come in? Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin! The wolf came by, and he blew it down. Then the lazy little pig had reason to frown. The second little pig made a house out of sticks. He slapped it together with branches and twigs. Little pig, little pig, won t you let me come in? Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin! The wolf came by, and he blew it away. Then the foolish little pig cried all day. The Three Little Pigs Rap, Part II The third little pig took his time. He worked hard and made a house, so fine. Little pig, little pig, won t you let me come in? Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin! The wolf came by and saw that it was strong. He said, This little pig is the smartest around! So I m going to climb down the chimney instead, and grab that pig by his chinny-chin-head! The wolf climbed down and fell into the pot, of hot boiling water that the pigs had brought! They had wolf stew for supper, that night, and talked with each other about doing things right. Do your best at whatever you do, is the lesson that this story is teaching you!, My Love Nest Foxes have holes. Bears have caves. Birds of the air have trees. Everyone knows that those who stay together are a family. Worms have the ground. Fish have the sea. I wonder which one is best? I have looked around, and it seems to me, I'd rather have my own love nest. Show the children pictures of foxes, bears, birds, worms, fish, and their different habitats. Talk about different homes that we live in, such as trailers, apartments or houses. They differ in size. They differ in the amount and kinds of stuff inside. What matters is what is going on inside your home. Are we treating one another with kindness? Kindness makes a home into a love nest. We talk about ways of showing love, such as sharing, talking nicely, listening and helping. Ask each child to share a way that they can show love towards a family member, today. 3

We talk about the concept of being sorry. I ask the children to name things that they have done which they are sorry for. We talk about ways to show that we are sorry: helping to This can be emonstrated with puppets. Example: Scruffy the dog and Harold the monkey are playing with a toy together. Scruffy grabs the toy and won't share with Harold. Harold begins to cry. Scruffy gives the toy back, and says that he is sorry and will try harder to share. Sometimes, I get in trouble, for doing something bad. Then I lie, and the trouble doubles, into the worse that I ve ever had! They have just finished baking a batch of yummy chocolate-chip cookies. The cookies are big and warm, for they just came out of the oven. Oh, they look delicious! You have been told not to touch those cookies until after supper, but no one is looking! You grab a cookie, eat it quickly, and run out of the kitchen. You do not notice that you have left cookie crumbs on the counter. You do not realize that you have chocolate around your mouth! One of your parents comes into the kitchen and sees the crumbs. "Did you eat one of these cookies?" they ask. What do you say? It is surprising, just how honest children are when answering this question. We talk about how important 1t is to tell the truth. I inject that parents usually already know the truth; they just want to hear us say it! There are many situations that could be presented with this song. It would be advantageous to present situations at school that require truthfulness. Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy. Anne Frank Sing A Little Song I like to sing a little song, whenever things go wrong. I find it helps my heart to feel more happy. I just make up a little tune, and then I find that soon, Instead of feeling sad, I feel like laughing. I sing about the birds and bees, trees swaying in the breeze, I sing about the flowers in the springtime, About ducks swimming at the park, stars shining in the dark, And how I love to walk under the sunshine! 4

5 A major part of self-esteem is taking good care of ourselves! The following concepts are discussed before introducing the relating song. Poor eating habits include eating a very small variety of foods, refusing to eat entire groups of healthy foods such as vegetables, eating too many foods of poor nutritional content, such as soft drinks and chips, and overeating. There is a major connection between time children spend in front of the television screen and sleep disorders. One study states. Children who watch a lot of television especially at bedtime or on a TV set in their bedroom are more likely to resist going to bed, have trouble sleeping or wake up more Watching TV stimulates children, whereas it relaxes adults. Likewise, video games can impact a child s quality and amount of sleep. Experts reveal that children ages six to nine should get ten to eleven hours of sleep each night. From ages ten to fourteen, children should get between nine and ten hours of sleep every night. Children who exercise regularly have stronger muscles and bones, have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat, are less likely to become overweight, have decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, possibly have lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, and have a better outlook on life. In addition to the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges that a typical day presents, including running to catch a bus or studying for a test. When you eat good foods, you re gonna grow, grow, grow. When you exercise, you re gonna grow, grow, grow. When you sleep at night, you re gonna grow, grow, grow. Take good care of yourself! Examples may include sharing toys, helping with a task, or just spending time with someone who does not have a friend. Have the children share ways that people have been kind to them. Close by having them share one thing that they can do today, to show kindness to another child or adult. 6
