1 The Progressive Era News 6th Period Leo Frank Case: Murder Mystery found dead in a pencil factory. Janitor Jim Conley accused Jewish Leo Frank, and Frank was sent to prison. After this, Frank was kidnapped and hung. Who made the real crime? Many rumors say it really was Leo Frank who murdered her, but some people say it was Janitor Jim Conley. In 1986, Frank was pardoned, and the case was closed. GRADY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Founded 1892 Location: Atlanta, Georgia Care System: Public Hospital type: General Girl found dead in factory!! by Tyler Sosebee 13 year old girl was found dead today in pencil factory. Leo Frank was the last person to see her so he was accused. He got locked away today for life. He was the last person to see her alive along with Jim Conley, the janitor. Later Jim Conley was let go, sending Leo Frank to jail for life. Tom Watson began a campaign against Frank, and that's when the governor sentenced him to life in prison. Frank was later kidnapped from prison and lynched. Murdered in a Pencil Factory by AudreAnn Herr Thirteen year old Mary Phagan was Mary, 13, was strangled to death in a pencil factory. It is uncertain when she had been strangled. Mary's body was found under the pencil factory. Leo Frank was accused of murdering Mary. People kidnapped Leo Frank out of prison, and he was lynched, which means he was hanged. Later on, they found that Tom Watson began the campaign against Leo Frank. Then this group of people gave themselves a name, the Knights of Mary Phagan, which became the rebirth of the KKK. On September 22, 1906, a riot broke out over an article alleging black males were attacking white women. Many of our black leaders have been targeted. The Georgia military was called in, and 25 African-Americans died. OPINION: Framed by Grant Lyons Leo Frank was framed for killing a 13 year old girl at the nearby pencil factory. He was arrested and sentenced to life in prison, but soon after that a group of men hung him for the crime. Those men didn't have the right to do it, and they broke the law.

2 2 The Progressive Era News Crime Catch Up on Crime! by Autumn Garmon Last Friday, Mary Phagan, a white 13 year-old girl was murdered. Out of all the places, she was murdered in the pencil factory. Jewish Leo Frank and Jim Conley (janitor) were accused of the murder. Later, a campaign began against Leo. He was sentenced to life in prison, yet he was kidnapped by angry people and was hung. This was his death. Leo Frank was accused of killing a thirteen year old girl. He was given life in prison, but people hung him. (Kyle H.) Leo Frank accused of murder April 26, Leo Frank was charged with the murder of Mary Phagan, a local 13 year old. Little evidence was found, but Leo was definitely charged. Police found the murder took place in a pencil factory. Frank was found guilty and was sent to prison. (Riley M.) Crime Report - Plessy vs. Ferguson Out of Place by Anna-Marie Mayes Today in the whites only section of the train, Homer Plessy (a black man) sat in the whites-only section. The audacity of these blacks has become outrageous. Obituaries Leo Frank - He was the owner of a pencil factory. He was accused of murdering a 13 year old girl in his own factory. His life ended when a group of angry men hung him because they thought jail was too easy. (Nic A.) Leo Frank - This man was accused of murder of the 13 year old girl, Mary Phagan, who was said to be strangled. A large group of people raided the prison and hang him. He was the owner of the pencil company. (Evan L.) John Gordon - He opposed Reconstruction. He was the supposed leader of the KKK. In 1872, he was a U.S. Senator. In 1886, he was a U.S. Senator. Alonzo Herndon ( ) - His mother was a slave, and his father was white. He was a barber and a real estate investor, an entrepreneur. He was a business, social, and political leader. He also helped with the Niagara Movement. (Lane V.)
