4-H Science Investigation Script WELCOME STATION Welcome to 4-H Science Investigations! Do you want to figure out the fair mystery? What you are going to do today is go to the different stations and complete some activities to help solve a mystery. Does that sound fun? Right now I want to give each of you a journal and pencil to write down clues to help you solve the mystery. Show them where they are going to write the questions in the journal. Then at the end you are going to answer a few questions about what you did today. To start off the mystery I need to tell you the story about a boy named Freddy who won grand champion with his 4-H lamb. When Freddy went to feed his lamb named Boonie the morning after they won, Boonie wasn t in his pen. Do you want to help us find Boonie? Ok then you need to go to the next station where you will be given some more information to solve this mystery. Note about Station: Hand out pencil and journal. Suggested that each county get 4-H pencils to give kids as recruiting tool 1

RETINAL SCAN STATION Welcome everyone! At this station I need to tell you that there is an imposter lamb in the pen that belongs to Boonie. This other lamb must belong to someone else. To figure out who this lamb belongs to we need to bring in the 4-H Educator who will use a machine to take a picture of the eye ball of the imposter lamb. Do you know that the veins inside the eyeball of a lamb are different for each lamb, it is kind of like our finger prints. No one else has a finger print like you. It is how we can tell you apart. So we can take this picture and be able to see who this lamb belongs to. Here you see the retinal scan of Boonie taken in May before the fair. This other scan is the picture I took of the lamb that is in Boonie s pen. Now here are some pictures of lambs that other 4-H members brought to the fair. Can you match up the eyeball of the mystery lamb with same one in this stack of pictures? Great job you figured out that the imposter lamb belongs to our 4-H Queen. Now let s move to the next station where has some more information you need that will help you solve the mystery. Notes about Activity: 5 retinal scans to look at (two labeled Missing lamb and Imposter Lamb; others will have name with numbers) All pictures on one poster and laminated. 2

Finger Printing Station I can tell you that the 4-H Queen is very happy that you found her missing lamb. She didn t know where her lamb, Boiler had wondered off to. Unfortunately we still haven t found Boonie so we must keep looking for clues. The 4-H Queen helps Freddy and others look for more clues. While they are looking Freddy finds a sheep tag next to the trash can. See the sheep tag right here? Have a county sheep tag that have been cut on the table. These are the tags that 4-H lambs have in their ears. This tag has numbers on it and the numbers are another way we can identify the sheep at the fair. So when Freddy looks at this tag he realizes that it is the tag that should be in Boonie s ear. So what do you think we do now? Let the kids guess. We are looking for get the police or sheriff. That s right Pandora calls the Sheriff s department and ask the Sheriff to come over to the fair grounds. The Sheriff takes the tags to the Sheriff s department to find out if there are any finger prints on the tags and who they belong to. Activities: 1a: Have Sheriff or Police Dept there to finger print the kids 1 b: If sheriff department is not there- use pencils, paper and tape to identify child s finger print. 2: Show kids the different things that they should be looking for in a finger print. (handout) 3: Have finger prints of suspect #1, #2, and #3 and they can match them with about 5-6 different finger prints. 3

Excellent! You have identified that our 3 suspects are: 1. Fair Board President 2. Cat Leader 3. Arts and Crafts Project Leader You Rock! I m starting to think you might be a real detective! Now it is time to move on to the next station where there are more clues to unravel. Notes about Activities: Activity #1b: Each county is in charge of getting their own supplies for finger printing. Activity 2: Handout referenced will be in kit Activity #3 Have all fingers prints on same poster board so they are contained. 4

Tire Tracks Station Hi guys! Are you having fun so far? Now we know we have three suspects and now we have to narrow it down. I can tell you that the 4-H Sheep Leader finds boot prints from the sheep barn that lead to tire tracks. Now we need to know what types of vehicles the suspects drive. Here are pictures of the tires on the three suspects cars. You can tell that the Fair Board President drives a Sports Car The Cat Leader drives a Compact Car And the Arts and Crafts Project Leader drives a Pick up Truck When the Sheriff looks at tire tracks he compares the width and tire tread from the markings. Do you see how different these three tires are? Point out some of the differences. Now what I want you to do is match the tire tracks of each vehicle to the tracks left at the scene. Who do they belong too? This is a hard one right? We can tell that they don t match the car that the Cat Leader drove, but it is hard to tell between the tires of the sports car and the truck. So we know we can rule out the Cat Leader. It is now time for the final activity where we hopefully find who did it. 5

Notes about Activity: There will be a picture of the three suspect s tires. There will also be a blown up picture of the tire tracks from the scene. Kids will compare the picture for the scene to the pictures of the tires. There will be a suspect board in the kit, but you will need to get pictures of your own suspects to put on the board. 6

BANANA DNA ACTIVITIY You have now arrived at the final activity! Here we learn that as the Sheriff is walking back to the Sheep barn he finds a hat that says Knittin Fool. He thinks this might be another clue. He looks inside the hat and finds a strand of hair. He decides to take that strand of hair back to the Sheriff s department and have them see if they can get a match on the DNA from the hair. Have you ever seen DNA before? Well I have this fun activity that we are going to do that show you what DNA looks like. Follow the lesson plan attached for the steps to this activity Did you enjoy that activity? You did a great job. Now let s go to the final station were you will find out what the Sheriff learned from the DNA. Notes about Activity: Pictures of real DNA strands will be in kit Prep work suggestions: o Have alcohol tubes already filled and sitting in a small cooler so that it can stay cool as directions calls for. o Put coffee filters on cups o Pre cut bananas/ put in lemon juice and keep in cooler to slow down browning process. 7

CONCLUSION Welcome to the Final Station! Here I can tell you that the Sheriff learned from testing the hair sample of DNA that it does belong to the Arts and Crafts Project Leader. So that must mean she took Boonie right? Well guess what, there is a twist to the story!!!! While the Sheriff was at the police station matching the DNA, Freddy decided he better go feed his other 4-H animals. He went to the cattle barn to feed his Steer, Walter and would you believe when Freddy got to Walter there was Boonie, just laying next to Walter, happy as could be. You see Walter and Boonie are best friends and live right next to each other in the barn at home. They had been separated into different barns during the fair. Boonie must have been missing Walter and so he jumped the fence in the middle of the night and was with Walter the whole time. Well you were very helpful today. For all your hard work I have an official 4-H Investigation badge for you! (Badges will be in kit for you to give out.) I also have this book that is the story of Freddy and Boonie and their adventure. Did you guys have a good time? I need you guys to do one last thing for me. I need you to answer a couple questions in the journal and turn them into me. Go to the last page and there are 3 questions. You can use that pencil I gave you, but make sure to not put your name on paper for me. 8

Thank you guys for coming and please tell others how much fun you had and have them come over here, but make sure not to tell them the ending! Parents we also have these brochures about 4-H Science and other educational programs that Purdue Extension Offers. 9
