1 2015 Wilkerson Weekly Weeks of BY IVY WANG AND KATHERINE WEN to Week in Review These last two weeks we have been focusing on starting our narrative pieces, Devil s Arithmetic, and Greek and Latin roots. We re making plot diagrams and some people have started writing an introduction for their narratives. On Tuesday, December 8th, we played Kahoot to study the Greek and Latin roots. Then on December 9th, we had I-Ready testing. After everyone finished I-Ready, we started watching The Devil s Arithmetic movie. Using a line diagram, we worked on comparing the book and the movie. We discussed what books and movie can have over the other. Our quarterly reading requirements and IRB completion forms were turned on Tuesday, December 15th. On Wednesday, December 16th, we had our Greek and Latin Root test. Upcoming Assignments Starting narrative pre-writing and writing Independent Reading Requirements for Third Quarter IRB s connected conformity for the next marking period. Looking Ahead Starting the third quarter, we will begin to study the Civil Rights Movement. We will be comparing and contrasting this event with the Holocaust. Birthdays Caitlin Cooler-12/10 Audrey Cash 1/02 Special New/Events On December 8th, Service went to see A Christmas Carol at Playhouse Square. The holiday s call for a season of concerts, so on December 9th there was a choir concert. Then on December 15th, there was an orchestra concert. On Friday, December 18th, Jazz Band and Show Choir performed for everyone. There was also a fun filled Pep Assembly with the whole school. An Ugly Sweater Contest was also held.

2 Student of the Week Try to guess who the student of the week is! Interviewer: Hello. How are you? Student of the Week (SOTW): I m great. Interviewer: What is your favorite topic in Ela? SOTW: My favorite topic in ELA is the narrative writing we are currently learning right now. Interviewer: How long have you been in REACH? SOTW: I've been in REACH since 5th grade Interviewer: What is your favorite thing to do in your free-time? SOTW: I love to play games such as Pokémon and Minecraft, and enjoy YouTube videos in my spare time. Interviewer: What is your favorite thing about the holiday s? SOTW: My favorite thing about the holidays is the gift-giving and receiving at Christmas. Interviewer: What is your favorite subject? SOTW: My favorite subject in school and outside of school is history. The past never ceases to fascinate me. Interviewer: What is your favorite quote and why? SOTW: My favorite quote is "The greatest pleasure is doing what people say you cannot do." This is because many times I doubt myself, but when I do that thing I doubt, it is truly the greatest feeling I have ever felt. Interviewer: What is a book that has an affect on you? SOTW: I haven't yet experienced a book that has been truly life-changing, but the closest would probably be the memoir In Defiance of Hitler: The Secret Mission of Varian Fry. This is because I always worry about my future, but the story of Varian Fry showed me that anyone can make a difference and that I didn't have to worry. Argumentative Question Do you think that essays are a good evaluation of a student s progress? Some people said that essays are a good evaluation because essays show that the writer understands and can apply their knowledge of the topic. Other people said that essays are NOT a good evaluation of a student's progress because essays don t show everything that a student learns and some people get anxiety if they know it is an evaluation. Jason Zhang Student of the Week: But most people said that essays are a good evaluation if put with other things. This is because different students have different skills and multiple areas should be tested. Some students are strong writers while others are not as good which could effect the evaluation.

4 How many seconds are there in a year? You will know that I am coming From the jingle of my bell, But exactly who I am is not an easy thing to tell. Children, they adore me for they find me jolly, but I do not see them when the halls are decked with holly. My job often leaves me frozen, I am a man that all should know, But I do not do business in times of sleet or ice or snow. I travel much on business, But no reindeer haul me around, I do all my traveling firmly on the ground. I love the time of Christmas, But that's not my vocational season, And I assure that is because of a sound economic reason.
