1 1 11 Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Syllabus Mrs. Peterson First Quarter Week One-August Rhetorical Skill Focus: metaphor, irony, allusion and theme Review syllabus Purchase The Scarlet Letter, 50 Essays, A Portable Anthology, The Elements of Style, The House of the Spirits, and Like Water for Chocolate Read and annotate Mansfield s "The Garden Party" Write a thesis for "The Garden Party" using Tone Theme Purpose (include: direction, claim, universal idea and topic/subject). Thesis due Friday Introductory letter must highlight two important topics: (1) who you are-your interests, hobbies, talents, favorite subjects and why, etc. and (2) provide a narrative about your most significant writing experience. This narrative can take on any tone (e. g. sad, didactic, satiric, humorous, etc), but should focus on a memorable event related to you as a writer (e. g. the time when you won an award for writing, the time you received a paper back with red ink, the time your mom put your story on the refrigerator, etc.). Describe the event and tell the reader how you felt as well as how the experience shaped you. This assignment is due 9-3/ 4 Review One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovych for a final during Week Two Read and annotate "On Writing Well" AP Terms Dittos: "Glammour Grammar", "Transitions", "Elements of Literature", "Course Overview", and "The Writing Process" Grading Scale A 4 points B 3 points C 2 points D 1 point Below 60 F 0 points Materials required for the course include a 3-ring binder (divided as follows: syllabus, vocabulary, notes, dittos and essays), highlighters, pens, pencils, Post-Its, paper, and 3x5 index cards.
