3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Two of the guests have a conversation about the opening party of Chew Foods. Guest 1: I really like the opening party of this restaurant. Guest 2: I definitely agree with you. The master of the ceremony is the event well. Guest 1: That s right! He even gave me a warm when I entered the restaurant. Guest 2: Perhaps he s been doing this job for several years now, that s why he s already an expert in his field. Guest 1: I think so. Did you notice the ambiance of this restaurant? I love the soothing effect of the wall. The space is also big enough to accommodate more people. Guest 2: Oh yes, I noticed that too! It is very relaxing! Furthermore, the waiters are very friendly and are also quick in serving the foods. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Causative Verbs (5-6 minutes) General Description: Causative verbs indicate that a person or thing causes another action to happen. The three patterns in using causative verbs are as follows: 1. With to (help, allow, motivate, get, make, convince, hire, assist, encourage, permit, employ and force) Subject + Verb + Object + Verb to (Object) Ex. The salesman encouraged his client to have a lunch meeting with him. 2. Without to (have, make, and let) Subject + Verb + Object + Verb (Object) Ex. I let her host the gathering. 3. With that (insist, suggest, recommend, ask, require, request, and demand) Subject + Verb + that Object + Verb Ex. I suggested that Laura assist the customers. Remember: The causative verbs that used the pattern without to and with that are followed by a noun/pronoun and the base form of the verb. Examples: With to Without to With that The manager helps the waiters to serve the food. The organizer did not allow the visitors to smoke during the gathering. He had his customers eat the meal. The host made the visitors enjoy the gathering. He insisted that the catering firm handle the event. The client requested that the salesman present his report during their business lunch.
