The first part of Jesus plan was for everyone to sit down Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, started handing out food The bread and fish multiplied so there was enough for EVERYONE! WRAPPING UP THE STORY There was enough left over to fill 12 baskets Through Jesus, God used the gift of a small boy to feed all those people The boy gave what he had, and God did something amazing with it BL: Use what you have to serve others. HOST: Hey, everyone! Welcome to the [your environment s name] Diner the place where you can always satisfy your hankerin for tasty treats. If there s one thing I ve learned from hanging out with kids your age, it s that you can eat LOTS. I ll bet if I left a whole pound of M&M S in the middle of the room, it d be gone in about five seconds! At THIS restaurant, we re always here to serve. And you know what? That Girl Scout selling those cookies? I ll bet she needs a hand eating all of those Samoas, right? Of course! Let s see what kind of game we re serving up here at the diner today. Set the platter down on the table. First, let me ask you a question. Do any of you like odd combinations of food, like peanut butter and banana sandwiches? Tell me your favorite weird combo! Take a few odd food combo suggestions from the audience. Ring the bell each time. Nice! And I thought my grilled cheese sammich with Corn Flakes on top was weird. Well, today s fantastic challenge is all about strange combinations. Boy, oh boy, it s going to be good! Let me get two lucky Small 2018 The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. 4 Group Leaders up here to play Sammich Builders. CG: Sammich Builders Slide Have the two pre-selected Leaders join you on stage and stand behind the table. Hold up the platter with the bag of food on it so everyone can see. This bag contains items that will go on a sammich. For each round, I ll pull two items out of the bag, and I ll let someone in the audience pick which item goes to which Small Group Leader. But there s a twist! We ll blindfold the Leaders so they don t know what s going on their sammich. All right, let s pick our first two ingredients. We have [item one] and [item two]. Blindfold the two Leaders. Pull two ingredients out of the bag. Choose a kid from the audience. [Kid s name], please silently point to the Leader that you think should get [item one]. All right! Let s give both Leaders their first ingredient. Let the kid point to one of the Leaders. Go around behind the table, so you re facing the kids and they can see what you re doing. Place a slice of bread on a plate for each Leader. Place the first ingredient on each Leader s sammich. Go through five rounds, letting a different kid pick which Leader gets each item for each round. The sammiches are complete! And wow, they are unique! Now, what kind of diner would we be if we didn t have our customers at least taste their sammiches? Leaders, I think you know what s coming. Reach down and take a hold of your sammiches, and when you re ready, take a nice, big, juicy bite! Have the blindfolded Leaders take bites of their respective sammiches. Then, after the mayhem has died down, have them remove their blindfolds. Point out some of the ingredients they just enjoyed. Let s give our Leaders a big hand. Thanks for being great sports, you two! Dismiss Leaders to their seats and put the food away. I must say, those sammiches looked delicious. In today s story we ll look at a time when Jesus used an interesting combination of food to do something pretty amazing. But right now, go ahead and stand up. Let s put our voices together and worship God! Worship Leaders enter as Host exits. 4. Praise and Worship (10 Minutes) End with CG:Transition Slide 5. CG: Word Video and CG:Transition Slide 6. 5 SETTING UP THE STORY HOST: (Recalling the game at the beginning)... and then... HE ATE IT! STORYTELLER: Are you serious? All that random stuff that was in the bag? HOST: Yes! STORYTELLER: Oh my goodness that s gross! HOST: I know, right? STORYTELLER: (To audience) That game you played at the beginning? Classic. My kind of sammich combination is a cheeseburger with bacon on it. HOST: Oh, you mean a cow s yellow blanket with pork sticks? (Ring the bell.) STORYTELLER: What? No, that s not what I said. HOST: That s what they call it in a diner. Go ahead, give me another order. STORYTELLER: Okay um a burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, an order of fries, and a Coke. HOST: Walk the cow through the garden, side of frog sticks, and swamp water. Got it. (Ring the bell.) Storyteller stares blankly at Host. HOST: Oh! That s my diner lingo. It s much more fun to call out orders that way. STORYTELLER: All right. Well, I think you can add a little sizzle to our story today. Can you take some more orders for us? HOST: You bet! Host goes behind the table. STORYTELLER: Today s story comes from the book of John, chapter 6. (Hold up Bible.) Let me set up the story a bit for you. Jesus was the Son of God, so He could do whatever He wanted, whenever He wanted. He really didn t NEED anyone s help. But He chose to invite people friends and strangers alike to be a part of what He was doing. In this story, Jesus invited three people to join in and be part of His plan. The first was a guy named Andrew, and the second was a guy named Philip. The third we ll meet in a moment. (To Host) Since the name Andrew means strong, manly, and courageous, can I get something manly off the menu? Host pulls out a can of chunky beef stew. HOST: Bossy in a tin cup. Order up! (Ring the bell.) STORYTELLER: And then there was his friend Philip. HOST: Slushy with a lid on it! Order up! (Rings the bell.) Host hands the can to a boy in the audience The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church

6 Host hands an empty slushy cup with a lid and straw to a boy in the audience. Storyteller looks confusedly at Host. HOST: (To Storyteller) You know... Philip... fill up... fill up my cup with some strawberry slush! STORYTELLER: Clever! (To audience) Let me tell you what Jesus, Andrew, and Philip were up to. GIVE ME A BREAK STORYTELLER: Jesus had been teaching a really long time, and He was pretty worn out from it. So Jesus and his friends, including Andrew and Philip (point out the two boys in the audience), crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Move the two boys up to the front of the stage. They were all pretty worn out, so they decided to sit down on a mountainside to take a break. To make matters worse, it was right around dinnertime. Jesus knew these people would be hungry. Andrew and Philip s stomachs must have been growling, too. Philip and Andrew, what do your stomachs sound like? The two boys make stomach growling noises. Whoa. We need to get some food in you if your stomachs sound like THAT. Yikes! HANGRY STORYTELLER: Jesus knew He was dealing with thousands of hungry mouths to feed, but amazingly, He already had a plan. He didn t tell that plan to Andrew or Philip, though. Instead, he asked Philip something to test him. Jesus leaned over to Philip and asked this. Where can we buy bread for these people to eat? Open the Bible to John 6:5 (NIrV) and read. HOST: Slice of neat wheat nine-grain and chicks on a raft. Order up! (Ring the bell.) STORYTELLER: (To Host) Whoa, whoa, not yet! I ll let you know when we get there. (To audience) So Jesus asked Philip where they could buy bread for this giant crowd of people. Philip looked shocked! (To Philip) Go ahead, Philip, look shocked. (Pause for response.) Philip said that for each person to have just a bite of bread, it would take more than half a year s pay. They didn t have that kind of money. At this point, Andrew found a young boy in the crowd. Andrew, can you find this young boy for us? Andrew said this. Pause while the kid playing Andrew finds another young boy. Open the Bible to John 6:9 (NIrV) and read. Here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But how far will that go in such a large crowd? Okay! So this young boy had some food five loaves of bread and two small fish. What did you call that again, [Host s name]? HOST: Slice of neat wheat nine-grain and chicks on a raft. Order up! (Ring the bell.) Host throws the bag of rolls and the package of Swedish Fish to the young boy The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church

7 STORYTELLER: Both Philip and Andrew figured that such a small amount of food was never ever going to be enough to feed all of those people. But remember, Jesus had a plan! ORDER UP! Get the rolls and Swedish Fish from the young boy. Hold up the rolls. STORYTELLER: Jesus took the bread and gave thanks. Then He started handing out food to those who were seated closest to Him. What did you say for bread and fish, [Host s name]? HOST: Slice of neat wheat nine-grain and chicks on a raft. Order up! (Ring the bell.) STORYTELLER: Right. Jesus kept handing out the food over and over and over, and it spread through the whole crowd. The bread and fish multiplied so there was enough for EVERYONE! [Host s name], Andrew, Philip, young boy with the food, thanks for your help. You can leave your stuff on the table as you head back to your seats. (To audience) Let s give them a big hand! Dismiss kids to their seats. Host exits. WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: It was a real-life miracle! Jesus multiplied the bread and fish until all those thousands of people got enough to eat. Not only that, but there was enough left over to fill 12 baskets! Toss the rolls and Swedish Fish back into the grocery bag. Through Jesus, God used the gift of a small boy to feed all those people. The boy gave what he had, and God took it and did something amazing with it. You can give what YOU have, too. CG: Bottom Line Slide You can [Bottom Line] use what you have to serve others. You might not think you have much, but God can do big things when you use what you have for Him. Sometimes serving is super easy. You see someone break a pencil on accident, and you give them an extra one that you have in your pencil case. Other times it s not so easy. You might have to think hard to figure out how you can help someone else... or a bunch of someone elses. After all, serving is a choice you make. It s deciding that you re going to [Basic Truth] treat others the way you want to be treated and then doing it! When the disciples saw the crowd of hungry people, I bet they thought it was an impossible situation. They thought there was no way they d be able to buy enough food to feed all of them. But look what happened when the boy decided to share his dinner. Food for one small boy became food for THOUSANDS. Guess what. You can do what that young boy did. You can [Bottom Line] use what you have to serve others. It might be a talent you have like playing an instrument or making art. It might be giving a few dollars to a great cause. Don t think, Oh, it s too small. It won t make a difference. Sometimes small things add up to make the biggest impact, and the biggest differences in the world can start with someone who makes one small first step. You never know how God might use you to make a difference in someone s life. It all starts with using what you have to serve others. You can head to your small groups now, and talk about how you can use what YOU have to serve! At the end the Storyteller should pray for the group and dismiss kids to Small Group 7.
