1 Name: Date: A prepositional phrase is a modifying phraseconsisting of a preposition and its object. Example prepositions: across, in, under, around, beneath, over, up, without etc.. 2 A preposition is a word that shows position or direction or introduces a prepositional phrase. Write a sentence with each preposition listed below. 3 Preposition or Adverb? Practice 1 Preposition or Adverb? Many words can be either prepositions or adverbs, depending on how they are used. Remember that prepositions always have objects. Adverbs do not. Prepositions We walked along the path. Perry sits behind me. Adverbs Will Adam come along? The dog followed behind. Exercise 1 Distinguishing Between Prepositions and Adverbs. In each blank fill in a word that is appropriate for the meaning of both sentences in each pair. In the sentence in which the word is used as a preposition, underline its object. Use each coordinating conjunction to connect equal parts in a sentence. 1. and 2. but 3. or 4. yet 5. so 6. nor 7. for Correlative Conjunction: Correlative conjunctions are similar to coordination conjunctions except they always work in pairs. both...and neither...nor either...or whether...or not only...but also ex. equal nouns: Neither Chris nor Kate wanted to sit next to the stranger. equal adverbs: During lunch, Herschel eats both slowly and neatly. equal phrases: I don t know whether the keys are on the counter or in the drawer. equal sentences: Either return the book, or pay the fine. C. Underline both parts of the correlative conjunctions in the story below. Draw an arrow showing they belong together. The first one is done for you. 5 Part III: Interjections: Interjections are words used to express emotion. Strong interjections can stand alone followed by an exclamation point. Milder ones can be part of a sentence followed by a comma. Ex. Oh, no! My pants have ripped again! Yes, we have our English test tomorrow. Good grief! Tracy put his pet snake on another diet. A. Underline each interjection in the following story. Wow! This is totally awesome! shouted Bill. He always liked going to new places. His dad was even excited. He said, Far out! I can t believe we re going! Bill s mom was less enthusiastic. She said sarcastically, Super! That s just what I need - three weeks of guys going nuts over cars. Oh, but Mom, these aren t just cars! countered Bill. Yes, dear! Bill is right! This will be fun for you, too! helped his dad. Arrghh! Can t you see all the cars there are to see in Detroit in three days? asked Mom. No way! Then we d miss all of the workshops on compression, timing, power bands, and air flow through engines, chimed Bill and his dad. Good grief, thought Bill s mom. They are both totally gone and they want to drag me over the edge with them. Engineers! Oh, why did I marry an engineer? Then she remembered the money, stability, and honesty that were also a part of her husband and his career. As long as she didn t have to go to Detroit, why not let them go? Okay, guys, go ahead without me. I ll have much more fun here. Yes! This is great! the guys exclaimed. Then they went off to argue about how to increase the power output while staying within the cubic-inch cylinder size requirement for their racing class.

6 An interection is a word added to a sentence to convey an emotion or a sentiment such as surprise, disgust, joy, excitement, or enthusiasm. Common Interjections include; great, ouch, ha, hey, gee, hooray, hey, oh, oops, wow, yes, well, no, alas, aha. Directions: Circle the interjection or interjections in each sentence below. Example A: Answer: Oops, I spilled my milk. Oops 1. Aha! I finished my test on time. 2. Ouch! You hit me in the leg! 3. Wow! I can t believe I finished the marathon. 4.
