1 Sherwood News Is Coming! By Charles Peake There s a new newspaper at our school. Forrest Milner is the one who came up with the idea. He wanted people to understand how a newspaper works. I interviewed Forrest to find out some more answers. Charles: Why did you create the newspaper? Forrest: Basically people can learn how a newspaper works and I wanted another interesting club at the school. Charles: How do you think the children will react when the newspaper comes out? Forrest: I think a lot of them will join the club and I think the people will enjoy and read it. Charles: How many people will probably read the paper? Forrest: I am hoping at least half of the school will read the first edition and I hope the second edition will get ¾ of the school to read. Continued on the next page. The reason I did this was just to see what the most liked pattern was at Sherwood. The choices you voted on were: polka dots, plaid, stripes, zigzag, and denim (jeans). Martholdy Pierre-Canel Have you ever thought that what you eat can have a big negative impact on you in the future? You can stop that from happening if you start thinking about what you are about to eat. I know that some kids just can't live without candy or popsicles, but here is a solution, start by buying sugar-free popsicles. You can also have bowls of fruit instead of candy. Trust me if you don't start eating healthily you'll regret it. Continued on the next page. How to Make Ice Cream Pie! Nia Zagami, Rachel Schindel, Ava Casaus (ask your parents before you make the ice cream pie) This pie is sooo good. The best thing about it is that you can change it up, you don t have to use candy bars. You can use all kinds of cookies, or candies, even straight up chocolate. Any way you want it, it tastes great! Forest: I think it would be good for the first edition but after that I am hoping for 5 to 6 pages an edition. Charles: What do you think the kindergarteners will do when they get theirs? Forest: Well, they will ask their teachers to read it to them and they can! I hope they will read all of them! Charles: Are you surprised at how many people joined the club? Forest: I am definitely surprised. I was expecting 10 people but I got 30 instead! Charles: How do you think the newspaper will turn out? Forest: I think a lot of the staff might stop after the first edition because of their responsibilities! Charles: Do you believe that every school should have a newspaper? Forest: I think that every school should have one because it is a great experience for their students. Charles: Do you think the paper will effect students reading levels? Forest: Yes, they will improve. Healthy Food Galore! Continued from the front page You might think "Oh, I can have sugar and it won't make a difference." WRONG. It makes a big difference. Did you know that an average American kid eats more than 20 teaspoons of sugar each day and adults eat 50% more than they did in the 1970 s? Research shows that a purchased school lunch is healthier than a lunch brought from home. If you do pack your lunch instead of packing soda pop and chips in your lunch box, pack fruits, veggies, and water. When packing a lunch usually you would have a sandwich. You want to make sure that the sandwich is kept under 40 degrees to keep away bacteria. There is something called the "danger zone" which means that food kept between degrees can cause harmful bacteria to grow. This can cause food poisoning which will make you sick. Add some extra ice packs to your bag to keep it cool and safe from bacteria. The United States Department of Agriculture has a list of foods that do not have to be refrigerated. Some of them that you can put in your lunch are: Whole fruits, dried fruits, veggies, nuts, peanut butter, jelly bread, pickles, crackers, and canned meat and fish. We went to talk to adults about how they felt about children's health. Mrs. Morrison said, "Eating veggies is better for you than a meat based meal." "Healthy eating is very important! said Mrs. Valenstein. And Mr. Burd, the vice principal, said, "Form good habits for the rest of your life!" NOW start eating healthy. If you do then you can thank yourself for saying NO TO SUGAR. How to Make Ice Cream Pie! Continued from first page Ingredients: Crust:18 graham crackers (the 4-section large pieces) 1/3 cup butter, melted (melt carefully in a microwave oven, medium power Filling: 2 pints vanilla ice cream. ¼ cup finely chopped pecans, plus extra for serving. 4 peanut butter cups, roughly chopped. 2 large chocolate-covered peanut butter crunch candy bars, roughly chopped. Crush the graham crackers in a food processor or plastic bag. Pour the crumbs into a bowl and stir in the melted butter. Press into a pie pan and bake until golden and set, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool completely. For the filling: Remove the ice cream from the freezer and allow it to soften slightly. Mix in the pecans, peanut butter cups and peanut butter crunch candy bars and pour the ice cream mixture into the crust. Cover with foil and freeze until very hard. 1-2 hours To serve, cut slices of the pie. You can drizzle caramel sauce or chocolate over the pie. YUM!

West Virginia Chemical Spill By: Forest Milner Angelo Ferraro On January 16, 2014 a storage tank holding a dangerous chemical leaked into the Elk River, the West Virginia water supply. Over 300,000 people couldn t drink tap water or take showers. It was only when people started to complain that the inspectors came to look at the problem. They noticed that the company that spilled the chemical took no action to try to stop the leak. They didn t even call anybody to help. Stay tuned for more information! 4 Sherwood s Got Talent Elyssa, Amanda, Diamond, Sultana Hey Sherwood Sharks! We have a new thing to introduce to you guys. It's called Sherwood's Got Talent and it s where you can do anything involving your talents during lunch time. For example the kids in fifth grade have sung, danced, and have done cool tricks including Jack Martell with the rubix cube and Jack Weinberg with a yo-yo. During lunch in most grades, you can do all kinds of tricks and talents of your own as long as you notify your lunch attendants that you want to perform. You must explain what day you would like to perform. Sherwood's Got Talent is all about having fun and expressing your talents as well as sharing them. Have fun and enjoy yourself! Exercise Is A Must Efrata Fikru Kids should exercise 2 hours a day. You should exercise because it makes you strong and makes you have healthy muscles. It even helps you improve school attendance! You can have a good night's sleep so you wake up ready to go. Kids can try out for a team or they can exercise on their own. Kids should play basketball, soccer, football, Wii, hockey and ice skating. Since its winter that doesn't mean you can't exercise. There's plenty of stuff you can do. You can play, dance on the Wii, and go ice skating, or go skiing. Besides exercising, you have to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. KEEP MOVING! How to Teach a Dog Commands by Jack Martell Sit: Have a treat in your hand. Make sure the dog is paying attention to you. Now hold the treat about a foot above their head and say, Sit, in a gentle voice. If they don t sit the first time then try and try again. With enough practice they ll get used to just the word sit and you won t have to have a treat in your hand. Lie Down: This one is a bit more complex. First you have to get them to sit. Once you do that, hold the treat to the ground about 6 inches in front of their paws. If they lay down then give them the treat and if they don t then try and try again. Warning!!! I do not advise trying to teach lie down to puppies, especially the more active ones because they will pounce on your hand. **I warned you. Riddle Me This Why did Mickey Mouse go to space?
