2 ATTENTION COORDINATORS of the GOVERNOR STIRLING SHS SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL 2018 Dear Coordinators of participating schools, Welcome to this year s Governor Stirling SHS Speech and Drama Festival Please find the enclosed details of the event schedule outlining the sections to compete in, rules, judging pointers and entry forms required to participate. The Festival allows a limited number of students from each school to enter each section (see following pages). Please ensure to conduct your own selection process in order to maintain the Festival as a showcase of talent from your school. This year we will run secondary and primary sections separately, with only the final trophy presentation ceremony being held together. The entries are open to students in Years Please read the information supplied carefully and think about how your school can make the selection process fair and meaningful. A great example is that some schools in previous years have made their entry into the Festival their culmination of a term program for Speaking and Listening in English and/or an aspect of their Drama classes. I have included an expression of interest form and blank entry ledger for all festival sections. 7 Governor Stirling SHS SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL 2018 DESCRIPTION OF RULES AND JUDGING POINTERS FOR EACH SECTION Please note THE TIME LIMIT OF ALL ITEMS. No costumes allowed. Minimal props allowed. For primary competitors the POETRY, CHORAL SPEAKING AND PROSE READING SECTIONS have been subdivided into TWO categories the selected texts can either be chosen from AUSTRALIAN authors or from authors from AROUND THE WORLD. POETRY (Years 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) The student chooses and memorises a poem and presents their interpretation. The student should be encouraged to choose literature s/he enjoys and genuinely understands. The poem should only last up to 2 minutes. Feel free to omit verses in order to remain within the time limit. Humorous Poetry is any poem where the purpose of the poet is to amuse and entertain (eg. The Bush Christening by Banjo Patterson) Other Poetry is any poem written with a purpose other than to amuse. (The teacher should decide into which section poem should go.) Original Poetry a poem written by and recited by the student (high school section only). Original poems by primary students should be categorised as Humorous or Other by teachers. The following pointers may be useful guidelines in preparing students: POINTERS The poem is to be understood by the performer The rendering is audible and clear The phrasing does not conflict with the sense The voice is appropriate to the mood, style and language of the selection The imagery is vital and imaginative The selection is created for listeners The mood established by the speaker s sensory awareness will produce the effective modulations of pitch, pause and power The student should introduce the poem by stating the title and the poet CHORAL SPEAKING (Years 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) (Group performance of a poem) 4 to 8 students perform a poem suitable for a group performance. The maximum time allowed is 2 minutes. POINTERS There should be some unison The content should be interpreted and communicated with energy and enthusiasm The interest of the listening group is arrested at once Movement is allowed but should not be overdone. Show the vocal skills rather than a dance routine The poem is presented imaginatively and effectively to enhance the poem. PREPARED PROSE READING (Years 6-10) The student introduces and reads for the pleasure of the listening group a prepared passage of prose from a novel or short story. The piece should be READ not RECITED to the 7
8 audience (ie. eye-contact with the text). The MAXIMUM time allowed is two minutes. A bell will signal after two minutes, at which point the student should conclude their reading. POINTERS: The content is understood and communicated with energy and enthusiasm The ideas of the writer are communicated effectively and imaginatively The interest of the listening group is arrested at once The attention is held throughout, involving the listeners emotionally and intellectually Eye contact is used naturally The techniques of oral delivery are effectively employed expression, dramatic pausing, clarity and pace DUO MIME (Years 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) Two students present a wordless mime of their own choice. The maximum time for a duo mime presentation is 3 minutes. There will be a warning bell at 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Quality and pace of movement and use of space is the key to a good mime. The audience should be taken into the world of the mime through gesture and expression alone POINTERS: Mime skills such as Tocking should be encouraged to give the impression of solid objects being handled or encountered The content should be in the form of a short skit. It should tell a tale with a clear beginning, middle and end Students should face the audience as much as possible Try to have the whole body involved Minimal props only eg. A hat or a cane. No costumes Avoid play acting by using precise and accurate mime movement The performance can be accompanied by music DUOLOGUE or MONOLOGUE (Years 8, 9, 10) Two students choose a duologue passage, memorise it and perform it in character. Monologue, done alone, also needs to be memorised and performed in character. A duologue or monologue can either be a thinking aloud piece from a play or novel OR a conversation between two characters for a duologue from a script or novel. The duologue/ monologue should go for up to 3 minutes. There will be warning bell at 2 minutes 30 seconds. POINTERS Students should develop and maintain a character throughout. There should be obvious rapport between the two; a working together. Students should know their piece by heart and be confident in their delivery. Concentrate on vocal quality and expression. Concentrate on movement and facial expressions. Students should select a piece which will arrest the audiences attention quickly and then build on it.
