4 Cas19 Wasn't born to follow Posted - 28/01/2007 : 14:07:03 Brilliant Matt! Ive seen that but not got it now. Casx 8313 Posts MattMidd1 I ve got a good thing 4270 Posts Matt. Posted - 28/01/2007 : 14:19:24 Now some one was supposed to start a fishnet thread! Wasn't it clare? or Soph? Posted - 28/01/2007 : 15:32:52 Brilliant thread. Thanks, Cas. The first one looks more like Carol Channing (or a drag queen?) to me. Second one captures more of Dusty IMO although isn't it interesting what features cartoonists exaggerate. The adore the one about her deporation from South Africa. They capture the dress, and even have the bow in the hair. She would probably not like how they drew her legs. LOL. Not to exaggerate, but the overall cartoon brings to mind the image of the Chinese citizen standing before the tank in Tienaman (sp?) Square. daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 16:14:51 This drawing caused a bit of a stir when it first appeared and I can understand why, at least where Madeline is concerned. dustyspringfield.info/ /topic.asp?ar 4/18

5 5404 Posts Carole x Posted - 28/01/2007 : 16:57:09 Don't mean to be dense, but basically they're saying Mads was Dusty's flunky? How rude. BTW I'm noticing hte Gladys Thong book on the floor. Where did this appear? MattMidd1 I ve got a good thing 4270 Posts Posted - 28/01/2007 : 17:19:27 OMG! - Thats so racist! Good cartoon but it would be better if madeline was stood up doing her hair or something. Matt. dustyspringfield.info/ /topic.asp?ar 5/18

6 daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 17:25:15 It wouldn't happen now, but the sixties were less PC by a long way. I think it was in Melody Maker, one of the music papers anyway. Carole x 5404 Posts Cas19 Wasn't born to follow Posted - 28/01/2007 : 17:52:58 Yes I have that one too... I was undecided as to whether I should put it on the thread or not..it was a bit controversial at the time. Casx 8313 Posts Posted - 28/01/2007 : 19:28:15 Just took a closer look and see they have Mads in a maids costume. Outrageous! I bet Dusty didn't care for this one AT ALL. daydreamer Posted - 28/01/2007 : 20:12:40 Around the time that Madeline was in Blue Mink, she did an interview in Titbits Magazine. She said "I remember one guy, a Sunday columnist, writing this weird peice about me being Dusty's maid like we were a pair of kinks. It hurt me. and it hurt Dusty. We thought of sending some manure to his home. But most of these things heal after a time". Not sure which came first, the drawing or the article, either way, they must have been appalled by it. Casx Sophie Where am I going? 2302 Posts Posted - 30/01/2007 : 19:51:30 thanks for posting these, folks! the only cartoon i have a problem with is the racist one - very offensive towards Madeline; i'm sure neither her nor Dusty were very happy about that. does anyone know when it was published? because if it was after the events that happened in South Africa, i'd have thought the media would know better.. soulmezzo I start counting Australia 25 Posts Posted - 31/01/2007 : 01:47:52 wow those cartoons are so cute.. I've always wanted to see some original cartoon work of Dusty. xx Angie I think she's a challenge to cartoonize. Dusty lives in us Posted - 31/01/2007 : 01:58:15 Cas, was that cartoon any time around when she did the roller skating routine in her act? I think she didn't really skate too much, did she? Sophie, quite right. Good Dustyology question. Context and all. Karenina, is this your sketch? Seems like it might better go under Fan Art than cartoon. Looks like a Pieta to me...am I right? daydreamer Posted - 31/01/2007 : 07:28:13 The roller skating sketch would have been much earlier, from the mid sixties, when Pat was still a Barnett and a world champion speed skater. I do wonder if Pat gave Dusty lessons for Drury Lane though! Carole x Edited by - daydreamer on 31/01/ :47:51 dustyspringfield.info/ /topic.asp?ar 9/18

Carole, did I hear her saying last year she was training for a marathon (running) or was it a skating race? She's really something. karenina Little by little 280 Posts Posted - 31/01/2007 : 14:44:04 Its a bit s crappy and can be scrapped now. I was compelled to do it by the thing on my shoulder again and I did it in such a hurry it took longer to work out how to upload it. Im usually a perfectionist so I dont know what possessed me to send it. I wanted a religious picture and was stopped by the ecstacy of St Theresa(Teda). if the stripper reappears I might work on something better during half term. She has a house full of trophies as her husband is also a champion athlete. Carole x 5404 Posts Posted - 31/01/2007 : 18:53:26 I think Karenina was responding to my question about her drawing. Maybe Pat was mentioning a race. So she runs races and skates...what else? Guilty of straying off topic...i wonder if we need a Pat Rhodes thread. dustyspringfield.info/ /topic.asp?ar 10/18

Did you know there was an italian sculptor called Pietro Bracci. I suppose Pietro is as commonplace as peter. Thank you for the compliment but I dont think I did Dusty justice, especially the hand, Ive got to work on the hand. I Am capable of much better. Gypsy Rose Lee I ll try anything 1535 Posts Posted - 01/02/2007 : 16:30:45 Hi, Karenina Teda is Italian for Teda... no Teresa involved. Now, if you want to talk St. Teresa Of Avila, I'm your girl - it's my freakin' Confirmation Name. Love, Eileen Marie Rosemary Teresa Teda Little by little 384 Posts Posted - 01/02/2007 : 18:00:02 My family come from along line of Sculptors. My Grandfather, uncle, and father did it too. Teda could come from Tedadora. It means gift of God. Teda Marie Irenee Bracci. Half Italian, German, French. Irish, and English. karenina Little by little 280 Posts Posted - 02/02/2007 : 09:49:13 Oh well my confirmation name is teresa/theresa (dont think I ever agreed on the spelling) and Im half german half polish but if you two want to fight over it I'll do one for each of you. Teda has the advantage cos I know what she looks like!anyway according to that poem that Dusty liked there is enough love to go around....and maybe its whoever lived at Dona 'TERESA' Drive with Dusty. So I will still have to let the face magically appear. I am getting more of a Rodin for Ro and just hope the face materialises by itself. I dont think she would want me to draw it that way though so I will stick with the original concept.i am going back to read it properly- they never taught me that at catechism daydreamer Posted - 02/02/2007 : 12:50:05 Back to Dusty 'cartoons'. 14 to this drawing just an announcement or was it something more in detail?..thanks paula x 5012 Posts daydreamer Posted - 02/02/2007 : 17:29:47 There was a two page article with pics in Rolling Stone at that time Paula and I'd say every music magazine, daily paper and woman's mag over here (and a lot in the States) ran tribute articles on Dusty. Paul Howes produced a special Commemorative Issue of the Bulletin which collated most of these articles, obits and clippings and its something I still often browse through.
