The Human Rights Club at Kitsilano Secondary is working with Covenant House this winter. We ve been collecting old clothes, boots, and jackets for homeless teens in Vancouver. Quite a few children either leave home, or have been kicked out of their homes by their parents and BY: KARIN P. Friday, 4th December 2009 Mary McNeil, Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC together with Councillor and Deputy Mayor Georg Chow announced the nine Vancouver high school students who will participate in the Canadian-German project Paralympic Newspaper - Paralympics Zeitung. This newspaper is created in cooperation by German and Vancouver high school students during the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12th to 21th March They will be working as both reporters and writers. The publication has both a Canadian and a German part and articles will be written in the three languages: English, French and German. The German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel coaches the student-editorteam. The newspaper will be distributed to selected recipients in the host city and in Germany as well as to the European Parliament and the German Parliament. Parts of the paper will be an insert to mayor German newspapers totalling a print run of approximately 2 Million. The Canadian-German team includes nine students from Kitsilano, Eric Hamber, David Thompson and Lord Byng Secondary schools. The Canadian students will host the eight Germans. The German participants won a national writing competition on the topic people with a disability and/ or sports run by the publishing house Der Tagesspiegel GmbH and initiated by the are homeless by the age of fourteen of fifteen. Forty per cent of homeless teens leave a home because of alcohol abuse, and 30% leave a home because of drug abuse. These teens want an education and a better life for themselves, and 78% are seeking completion of either high school or Participating Students with The Vice Mayor George Chow of Vancouver and Mary McNeil, Minister of State for the Olympics at the Press launch of Project held at Vancovuer City hall on December 3rd, Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) /German Social Accident Insurance. We all know how the sun, like all stars, exudes so much energy. Nuclear Fusion: The joining of two hydrogen atoms into a single Helium atom. Because of gravity, these atoms feel attraction to the other s particles and react to their force. An atom passing another is inclined to combine the two complex systems of force into something more complex: the Helium atom. What is not often mentioned, because our sun is too small to do it, is that in larger stars a million times as massive as our own this process continues past helium. In these monstrous stars, the energy is great enough to combine two Helium atoms into a Lithium atom, to combine two Lithium atoms into Beryllium and so on. Eventually gigantic stars their cores Hydrogen, and each layer a new element, have a layer of every single one of our periodic table. Every atom is created inside a star. These stars, teeming with mass and energy, a concentration of everything of which our universe is made, EXPLODE. Out, out into the nothing, goes everything; little systems of orbit, little atoms of every type, blast into the universe independently. Two atoms may meet in space and their respective forces will make a molecule. More and more molecules in some familiar star trek will Klingon. Because of gravity, more and more mass collects until there are celestial masses: planets, asteroids, more stars, etc. Trillions of atoms work together to create a complex system with its own properties, like toothpicks in marshmallows with infinite combining possibilities. This alone is amazing, until you picture these molecules stacking and joining and functioning together to create a system that can govern itself, gain nutrients, dispose of waste, and reproduce. The cell. Yadayada, evolution, these atoms eventually join into infinitely complex systems with millions of these already mindboggling cells. They create something called a brain, whose rapid transfer of energy from particles to each other manifests itself as thought, information. Just atoms. Matter and energy must react to each other, must communicate in some form. Atoms gravitational pull to each other requires them to notice each other. A cell shrinks if it lacks water, grows larger when it must split and otherwise communicates its needs. Even if the only one listening is whoever heard that tress fall. Cats mew when they are hungry, and hiss when Mr. Paskovic kicks them. They react and communicate, the mass of atoms affected by another mass of atoms, all working at immeasurable speed to simulate thoughts and actions. But Humans take it to the next level: Our groups of cells, atoms, communicate their intricate needs through abstract sounds: Language. Words we form with our trillion-atom mouths share virtually nothing to do with the thought which stimulates them. And yet when our ear atoms detect vibrations in the air atoms, we transfer these into abstract thought. Reading something, we imagine sound vibrations in our mind telling us nonsense sounds which we interpret and are able to react emotionally to.poetry is the dance of mind atoms. Human Nature #2 This time, YOU can decide whether to take it seriously or not. I m tired of telling everyone that these aren t necessarily my actual opinions. Every person on the planet is a complex being. So complex, in fact, that we barely understand ourselves. Let alone each other. I m no exception. Here s one of the things I don t understand: Irrational Fear. There is no Tiger behind you. The ground is not about to become a bottomless pit. I particularly like arachnophobics; you guys are a lot of fun. A creature measuring a fraction of a human s mass is unlikely to cause you any harm, unless you re in some foreign jungle. You d think it d be afraid of you, but no. The terrifying creature evokes the most powerful fear you can imagine, and you cower before its powerful (if you re a microbe) fangs, too small to distinguish from the rest of its body. Also, they re as sharp as razor blades really, really dull razor blades. Another favourite is nyctophobia, the fear of darkness. The only thing to fear in the dark is that you might bump into something, such as a wall (and not a serial killer). I d like to see a culture that bases all its horror stories in well-lit areas. Fear of Light would be interesting to see. Come to think of it, fear of darkness isn t really justified as much as fear of light. Serial killers don t have night vision. Then there s one of the crazier ones: fear of Dead Bodies. Not really too much to say about this one, except that a dead person is much less likely to hurt you than a live person. So why do we fear things like these? Because we re not only cowardly, we re stupid. I guess it s just Human Nature. For: Mr. Chen and The makers of Floam For a limited Time 2601 West Broadway I cannot help but imagine every amazing thing in our Universe, and definitely in infinite others, as though they are nothing more than what they are: Atoms moved by Energy.We are Stardust, at root, but more amazing is that our stardust has compiled itself in such a way that we can discover we are Stardust, that our atoms can form a thought on their origin, that you can read and understand this article. For millennia humans have turned their gaze upwards to our inexplicable infatuation with the cosmos. Could it be hereditary instinct to hail our ancestors? I must add one more neuron-inspiring abstract combination of reactions to your brain: Most stars have what s known as a Cosmic Dance Partner another star, close by, interfering with the gravitational field. These two stars circle around and around each other in orbit, getting closer and closer because of the beautiful force of the Universe, Gravity. They eventually collide, the number one cause of death in Stars aged Trillion. This collision starts the whole shebang all over again, spreading atoms all over the Universe and Bob Loblaw. Our sun has been (thankfully) able to support life for a very long time, and will continue to do so for a long time after humanity for two reasons: One, it is a little small in size. The second reason is that our sun, beautiful and worshipped though it is, has no cosmic dance partner. No star to set off its motion or explosion. Love is simply an extension of Gravity, and it has nothing touching its hydrogen heart but to nurture us all (yes, including Pluto.) We live because stars die. Whether it s Oh gosh, Edward and Jacob are so hot or What bad acting, Twilight has become an inevitable part of everyone s life. With the recent release of New Moon, Twilight talk is at its highest. There have been many arguments as to why everyone is so obsessed with this Vampire Phenomenon. Well, there are two reasons that attract girls to Twilight: the actors and the impossible romance. Now, we all know that Robert Pattinson, the actor playing Edward is so, shall we say, last year. The new person on everyone s mind is Tay- lor Lautner. Who knew that if you packed on 30 pounds of muscle you would become irresistible to girls, eh? In New Moon, for almost the entire movie,taylor has his shirt off, so even people who do not like Twilight want to see the movie. Then there is the romance. Almost all girls dream of the perfect guy, something the fictional character Edward is. Stephanie Meyer, the author of Twilight was a genius when choosing what age range to target. Almost 18 million copies of Twilight have been sold, and about 85% of the sales were to girls between the ages of Now, there are the people who hate Twilight. To true vampire lovers, hearing about vampires that sparkle is almost sickening. The truth is, sparkly vampires are so not actual vampires. Ever heard of a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Obviously not, if you consider the Cullens Vampires! Also, what is up with Edward watching Bella when she s sleeping? Creepy stalker much? Oh, it s so romantic! most girls say. Having a guy sneak into your room and watch you sleep for a month is romantic? Sorry girls, but people are going to question what you consider romantic. The problem lies in the fact that a large portion of the North American population has never even heard of it. Apart from those who guiltlessly watch it again and again and don t stop themselves when they impulsively shout out the next line of dialogue. The film is semi-autobiographical of writer-director Bruce Robinson s life during his early years as a struggling actor. The setting is London during the closing of a decade, more specifically, Camden, The protagonists are two impoverish actors who share a frigid and skuzzy flat, infested with all sorts, from mysterious creatures in the sink to pestering drug dealers. I went to Andale s on a bright and sunny evening. It is nicely put together, with lots of decorations. The quality of food is good, but the presentation of it could be better. It was very good and filled right up. The service is fairly good, nice people but not very talkative. and is definitely worth checking out. The plot follows the brutish gangster Albert Spica (Michael Gambon), his wife (Helen Mirren) and the people in their lives. Spica has taken over the elegant La Hollandais Restaurant, which is operated by respected French chef Richard Borst (Richard Bohringer). Every night Spica dines at the restaurant surrounded by his inner circle of friends (Tim Roth and the late Ian Dury included) and his wife, Georgina. Spica disrespects pretty much just about everybody with insensitive oafish behavior. His wife, the repressed, well-bred and cultured Georgina begins to have a secret affair with Michael (Alan Howard), a quiet librarian and fellow regular to La Hollandais. When the two lovers secret is discovered by Georgina s ferocious husband, he makes a rash decision which is, in the end, his own undoing. Despite the intoxicating production design and almost poetic camera work, this film is disturbing, violent and darkly comic. It is not for everyone. But if you have the stomach for it, and you get to the final scene (my personal favorite) you will reap huge rewards. Fun fact: The four title characters are named for the actors writer-director Peter Greenaway wanted to play them when he originally wrote it. For example: Richard (The Cook) is for Richard Bohringer, the only one of Greenaway s first choices kept in the final film. Oddly enough Michael (The Lover) is named after Michael Gambon who was re-cast as Albert Spica (The Thief). YOUR AD HERE? Considering the light mood and adequate quality of the food, White Spot on 12th and Cambie still hardly passes as a place. I would return to the tables were not kept clean but the dishes were clean. The servers dressed in uniform, the presentation was recognizable. The night I went, the diner was strangely deserted, and considering this the service was surprisingly slow for a restaurant with only two tables to serve. When I asked to cut my burger into quarters (because of my braces) I heard the servers mutter a sneer. A what the hell could be heard from the serving window. They also messed up the order for our dishes. I seriously doubt I ll return to this location again. I would however, recommend ordering the salmon salad and/or a milkshake. Earls Reviewed by Thomas P. Recently, I went to lunch at Earls at Lansdowne Center and had an excellent experience. I went with a friend who ordered a burger whilst I ordered the Alfredo. It came very quickly, well proportioned and reasonably well presented. The waiter was very nice and knew a lot about the menu. Everything concerning staff and food was great but the décor was not the greatest. Everything was clean but rather old and not quite in the greatest condition. I went to Sammy J Peppers on a bright sunny day in the evening at around 5:30. I was greeted immediately at the door, and seated by the hostess. The server came to my table right after I was seated and brought me water. The restaurant was very entertaining. There was good music and many TV s to watch. The servers were very good looking and friendly. The food there is overpriced due to the small portions and sizes. During nightfall, the patio is still kept open and is warm because of the heaters above the tables. Overall, eating there was a fun experience. Guu Reviewed by Matisse W.H. Guu is a traditional Japanese restaurant that has been open for several years. It has a very unique theme and atmosphere. The food and the manner in which it is served to you are unlike any other restaurant I ve been too. The food has amazing flavor and is fairly priced. The waitresses are very attentive and are able to provide ample input on all of the foods. It s a very popular restaurant so it s a good idea to make reservations or to go early. Overall, it s one of the best restaurants I ve ever been too. If you are to go, I would suggest the Tuna Tataki, pumpkin egg balls, octopus balls, and if you re into it, the chicken cartilage. For dessert, I would suggest the vanilla tofu.

It does get pretty cold in Vancouver during the winter, so you should get warmed up for the chilly temperatures. Christmas is not really about the presents and cool stuff you get; it s more about having a relaxing time with your family and drinking that hot cocoa with marshmallows next to the fireplace. Families and people go on vacation at this time of year. The most popular places to go for a vacation are Hawaii, Florida or California. The beautiful climates make it an enjoyable and relaxing vacation. For those who stay at home, there are hundreds of things to do and get involved with during the winter holidays. First off, the community centers are packed with fun winter activities and organize a variety of events, like skating, going on snowboarding/skiing trips, indoor sports, snowmen competitions and a lot more. You can also hang out with your friends and have snowball fights, if it (hopefully) snows. Just don t be watching TV all day at home or playing your PS3 or XBOX 360. All you need is some fabric, thread, uncooked brown rice, scent, and your mom s old sewing machine. Cut two square pieces of fabric and lay them flat against each other. Sew three sides of the fabric and then turn it inside out so that the seam is on the inside. Fill with uncooked brown rice and any preferred scent (ex. Lavender Buds). Then sew the final side to enclose the rice. - Bath Salts are always a nice holiday gift for moms. All you need is a jar with a lid, Epsom salts, food coloring, and an essential oil. Mix all ingredients and let the mixture dry on a sheet of wax paper for a few hours. Pour in the jar and add a ribbon to make it look festive.
