3 Reasons why you Should NOT Introduce Dora to your Toddler Dora seems like such an innocent fun show, but is it really?!?! My daughter is 2.5-years-old and OBSESSED with Dora the Explorer (and her cousin Diego I might add). She loves it so much she had a Dora themed birthday party for her second birthday. Overall I thought it was a cute show for toddlers, helped teach them shapes, colours, numbers, etc. But after a year of watching Dora, I have noticed some issues with my daughter that have made me ban her from watching Dora.
These are my top 3 Reasons why you Should NOT Introduce Dora to your Toddler: 1. Language We don t speak Spanish in Canada. Learning another language is always amazing, but for a toddler just learning to talk, it gets confusing. Bee was counting in English pretty early, but kept getting confused with the Spanish numbers and getting them mixed up.
I was changing my son s diaper one day when I hear Bee start saying ayuadame, thinking she was singing I didn t pay much attention until it got more urgent, I went into my room and she was stuck straddling the edge s of her brother s crib, she had tried to go inside and bring him his comfort elephant. Because I do not recognize the Spanish word for help, I did not understand she needed it! When you hear help it instills a sense of urgency in you, ayuadame just does not send the same message. (no I do not think you should deny your kids a show teaching them another language, this is supposed to be funny and something to pay attention to!) 2. The annoying catchy Dora the Explorer theme song! It may seem innocent enough, but Bee watced a LOT of Dora at the end of my pregnancy with Po (I had SPD and couldn t do a lot so we did a lot of quiet activities). Reardless, it got in my husbands head, and he decides the BEST time to sing Dora Dora Dora the EXPLORER on a loop is while I m in labour, NO JOKE ladies! Nothing more annoying than dealing with contractions, breathing, and trying not to scream and wake up the toddler, then hubby starts laughing and singing Dora over and over
(and playing the opening credits on you tube I may add!). Husbands, annoying your wife with catchy children s songs while in labour is a good way to get smacked! 3. Swiper This one is actually a serious issue in our house. For those unfamiliar with Swiper, he is a little fox character who swipes things from the characters, adding a part to the plot, we have to stop Swiper, say Swiper no swiping, sometimes he swipes it, sometimes he does not. When he swipes it he says ha ha ha you re never going to find it now and takes off with it, making it the mission of the episode to find the stolen object. My toddler is young and impressionable and does not understand that this is a TV show and you do not do that in real life. The number of meltdowns we have had because she was not allowed to swipe something, especially from her brother, but I m playing Swiper! Swiper is an awful role-model for children and can really be a bad example for toddlers. #Dora Click To Tweet We try to explain to her that she cannot swipe things, but she doesn t understand. She will grab an item of yours (example cell phone) and say ha ha ha you re never going to find it now, then run
and hide it. At Halloween (I blame the Dora Halloween book we had been reading) she told a group of trick or treaters, I m going to swipe your Halloween candy. It was a little embarrassing for my 2- year-old to be saying that to a group of pre-teens! I know this does not seem like a big deal, but trying to re-program a toddler that swiping is not ok when they watch it on TV has been challenging and lead to multiple arguments and tantrums. During play-dates and just in general accusations of you re STEALING it from me run rampant and get quite frustrating to explain over and over that it is their turn or no I am not stealing it but you are not allowed to play with X (fill in dangerous object they took). Have you noticed any TV Shows that were/are a bad influence on you children? Please comment below with which ones. Please, please, please share this post to help save other parents the nightmare of naughty toddler behavior because of Dora! Note: This is meant as a humorous post, I in no way think you should not teach your child multiple languages, learning languages is a great thing. I found it confusing to her when she was just learning to talk, but that does not mean I would not have her learn them.
