3-Part Observations & Ways of Statements Connecting observations to opportunities & idea starters
A priest, a minister and a rabbi walk into a bar and the bartender says, What is this, some kind of a joke? 18
Every joke has a setup an dpunchline, and many times, an act out.. Don t worry, this isn t like sentence diagramming. It s really quite simple: 1. The Setup Establishes the premise of the joke by providing the audience with the necessary background info. The setup should be as tight as possible (new open mic comics tend to ramble on with unnecessary details). 2. The Punchline Wham! The laugh line. The setup led the audience in one direction, and you surprised them by suddenly going off in a different direction. That twist, that element of surprise, is a punchline s chief ingredient. 3. Tags/act outs (optional) Also known as toppers, tags are additional punchlines. Sometimes they build on the original, sometimes they twist and snap back and forth in surprising new directions. Think of a skiier slaloming back and forth, twist, twist, twist 19
You ve Observe spent & Experience time with It users, seeing what they do, where they do it, and how they do it.
Now, connect Observe & those Experience observations It to ideation through a simple narrative structure.
3-PART OBSERVATIONS WAYS OF STATEMENTS To communicate insights in more evocative ways, wrap your observations about users, situations, or industries in a 3-part structure. Don t jump to a solution when presented with a problem. Improve your team s ability to explore many varied ideas by writing Ways of statements. HOW TO 1 Start with an observation. This should be something direct a fact that seems almost obvious. People are bored and fidget as they wait in line 2 Now add an insightful reflection. It could explain the observation, it could call out an irony, or it could question why it has to be the way it is. this is no surprise as there is little in the environment to engage with or warrant attention. 3 Third, add considerations or ideas that are ways of overcoming the insight. consider ways of posting or sharing information that would be beneficial for those people to know. TIPS & TRICKS The real insight is in how you see everyday situations not in seeing or discovering truly surprising behaviors. PAIRS WELL WITH Ways of Statements Observation Reviewing user video Brainstorms HELPS ACHIEVE Empathy Exploration HOW TO 1 After spending time with users and the problem context, you will have identified both challenges and opportunity areas. 2 For each challenge, write a Ways of statement. We need ways of reducing wait times for urgent cases. 3 Sort the Ways of statements into groups that might share similar types of solutions. 4 A group of similar Ways of statements might suggest an overall approach to a solution. 5 Reflect and discuss which Ways of groupings seem the most promising. 6 Seed your brainstorm sessions with these Ways of statements to generate many possible ideas. TIPS & TRICKS Focus on a user-centered mindset users need ways of... If you find yourself with too many, edit ruthlessly. Just a few ways of... statements should generate hundreds of ideas. PAIRS WELL WITH 3-Part Observation Concept Sheets Activity Lifecycle Service Prototype Collaborative Cycle HELPS ACHIEVE Exploration TIME 2 3 minutes per TEAM SIZE 1 2 people MATERIALS Pen, paper, a questioning mind TIME minutes for multiples TEAM SIZE 1 2 people MATERIALS Sharpies, sticky notes 22
3-Part Observations 1. Write down one statement of what you saw that you think matters 2. Add a reflective comment that questions, establishes irony, a problem, etc. 3. Finish with one or more considerations. 23
Example Teachers routinely expressed their inability to work with each other because of time... Yet, each of them had free periods during the day. Consider ways of making schedules that give teachers overlapping free time, especially those of the same subject area. 24
Example Construction sites are always active in a city... But it hard to tell if they are fixing something or investing in making the city better. Consider ways of communicating the value of the project in interesting ways to those going by. 25
The power of Ways of... Consider ways of making schedules that give teachers overlapping free time Consider ways of communicating the value of the project in interesting ways to those going by. 26
Let s try writing some 1. Work with your observation partner. 2. Write 7 to 10 3-Part Observations 3. Take 20 minutes. 4. Then we ll discuss 27
3-Part Observations & Ways of... Questions on this method? How would you describe the value? When would you use it?
