AUDITION SCENE 1 SCENE I-5A: THE BLACK STUMP What did you just say? Nothing, Ralph! You vicious little stirrer! Ralph! Ralph! Ralph Ralph! Once more, just once more and I will smack your face so hard you'll have to stick a toothbrush up your tush to clean your teeth. Get a sense of Uma, Thurmn! It s not my fault you had poor old Ralph Jr surgically removed. Adam! Is it true that when you were born the doctor turned around and slapped your mother? No, his mother turned around and slapped everyone else. No wonder his father dropped him like a hot tiara. Took one look at this bitchy little screamer and ran for his life. Below the belt, Bernice. ( exits.) (To ) You all right? What s the matter? Nothing. Don t nothing me, darling. Look at you. You ve got a face like a cat s bum. I m worried about the show, that s all. We haven t even started rehearsals yet. 1
We ve got two whole weeks to get there and bugger all to do but rehearse! How did you get this job anyway, Mitzi, me darling? Who s the loser who runs this casino in the middle of nowhere? Your mother? No. My wife. Beat. Don t tell me you ve got a secret boyfriend tucked away out here somewhere? No. My wife. I m married. Tick! This is getting too weird. You? And a woman? What did you do on your wedding night? The best man? You know there are two things I don t like about you, Felicia. Your face. So how about shutting both of them! Got any more little surprises you d like to share with us? Haven t got any kids stashed away out there as well, have you? gets back onto the bus. Well, well, well. Who s a dark horse then? I don t know whether to clap you or slap you. I hope you haven t dragged us across the wilderness under false pretences. You two aren t thinking of getting back together, are you? Of course not. Marion s just calling in a favour, that s all. The other woman in my life put an end to our relationship years ago. ANOTHER woman!? Me! Oh, right. Well, at least you gave it a go. Some of us never got the chance. 2
You thinking about Trumpet? No. Trumpet was just a nice kid who had a thing about transsexuals. Lots of people do. Sort of a bent status symbol. Always good for a supper invite. You know I never heard him play. Play? He didn t have a musical bone in his body. No, Trumpet had a very large foreskin. So large in fact, that he could stretch the entire thing around a double-stuffed Oreo. Bern? I m sorry I never told you I was married. But I m not sorry you re here. Don t worry about it, doll. I m as jealous as all hell. gets back onto the bus.. BENJI appears on top of the bus with a little bubble blower. MUSIC: SAY A LITTLE PRAYER MY DARLING BELIEVE ME (BELIEVE ME) FOR ME THERE IS NO ONE BUT YOU PLEASE LOVE ME DO (ANSWER MY PRAYER ANSWER MY PRAYER) ANSWER MY PRAYER gets back onto the bus; Benji disappears. 3
AUDITION SCENE 2 There that s made all the difference. Yes, now we ve got a pink bus that doesn t work. We ll just have to hope somebody drives past. And what if nobody does drive past? What if they see Bernadette and speed up? You shut you Von Trapp! The important thing is not to panic. Why don t we take a breather and eat some dinner. Yes, that s very practical. I m sure Domino s will deliver but the thirty minute guarantee is going to be a bit of a stretch. You re not helping eat your hormones. Ooh. All right, let s rehearse. It might take our mind off things. Good idea. Come on grandma. You ve got a lot of catching up to do. We ll see about that! I was treading the boards long before you even had your tranny training wheels on!
Ha! Let s get real, Bernice, Les Girls wasn t a drag show, it was a bunch of flabby fairies flouncing about in feathers. How dare you! If it wasn t for all my hard work, you wouldn t have a career! Lip synching in a dress is hard work? This argument is redundant. We re all going to die. No, this Madonna-be needs straightening out. The only real art is in the lip synch. Getting every nuance just so. The exaggerated gestures, the straining of the neck, the vibrato of the Adam's apple, the quivering bottom lip
AUDITION SCENE 3 BERNIE and sit down on a bench. He's a good man, our Bob, isn t he? Mmmm Not my type, of course. Oh, don't come the raw prawn with me. I can spot the fluttering of a beaded lash from a hundred paces. He s far too old. Mind you, so am I. And how d he end up with the mail order bride, do you think? Unused frequent flyer points? That was uncalled for. He probably adored her once. Bern - you ever wanted kids? Sure, but I had enough problems of my own. And now well, I ve learned not to think about it. Old queens aren t the best people to raise children, I suppose. : I don t know, Elizabeth did a pretty good job. Prince Charles is a lovely boy. I meant old drag queens.
UNDERSCORE STOPS. Clubs, drugs, booze, wigs and fake tits they d all end up in politics. (reflective) Better to be gay, stray and fancy free. (a glance) Like Adam? The little ratbag. I dread to think what he s up to.
