MoClar MOMENTS Scarcity Mentality Vs Abundance Mentality A guide to help you become conscious of the words you use to manifest abundant experiences.
Learn to Shift Your Words Your speech reflects your core thinking mentality. The way you use words and your feeling behind those words tell you an internal story of your values and beliefs. In this workbook, I will discuss two opposing mentalities that influence the way you perceive life. Scarcity Mentality I was first introduced to the scarcity mindset through Stephen Covey s acclaimed book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Stephen Covey writes: Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else. The Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the success of other people. The scarcity mindset always believes that there is not enough for everyone. It focuses on the extreme short term of every decision without thinking of a long term consequence. Usually a person who is influenced by the scarcity mentality may think, What is the most fun option right now? What uses up the resources I have right now so that they can t be taken away later? The P2P Foundation has laid out specific qualities of a scarcity mindset. These qualities are the following: Victory means success at the expense of someone else. Difficulty showing happiness for the success of others including family, friends and business associates. Difficulty sharing credit, recognition, power and profit. Difficulty being a team player because differences in opinion are perceived as disloyalty. Abundance Mentality The abundance mentality perceives that we live in a infinite universe. As we shift from scarcity to abundance we begin to recognize that there is an unlimited supply of all things; the air we breath, the money we earn, the friendships we make, the experiences that bring us joy and the smiles we share
Learn to Shift Your Words Stephen Covey writes: The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. It opens possibilities, options, alternatives, and creativity. When you fully live from the awareness of abundance, you begin to feel a sense of gratitude and significance. This feeling is what brings about a higher degree of manifestation of the experiences you desire. The P2P Foundation has laid out these specific qualities of an abundance mentality: Victory means success that brings mutually beneficial results to all involved. Recognizes unlimited opportunities for positive growth and development. Realizes that there are three ways to do things, my way, your way and a better way. Appreciates the uniqueness of others. It begins by awareness. The first step in shifting from a scarcity to abundant mindset is by simply choosing to recognize what you speak about and how you speak about it. This awareness raises your consciousness on the words you use or the phrases that seem to repeat. It is especially important to hear those repeating phrases. Such as, Money doesn t grow on trees or That s just how it is. or Nobody gives you a handout. All of these repeating phrases are from the scarcity mind. *One exercise that you can perform is to ask your friends, family or coworkers about the common phrases they hear you say. This exercise alone will let you know what your default mindset is. The main goal of this workbook is to shift your language from one of scarcity to abundance. Within the abundance mentality is where you will find those golden opportunities and the key to a successful and fulfilling life. I notice that when my clients shift from the scarcity mentality to the abundance mentality, their results skyrocket, they finish more tasks, they become more open to life and they begin to express themselves with more joy and happiness. This simple shift leads you to a life of purpose
Learn to Shift Your Words Use this table to begin to bring awareness to the words you use in everyday conversation. Scarcity Mentality Vocabulary Instead of saying this... Abundance Mindset Vocabulary Say This... But > And If > When Because > For the fact Trying > Doing Have to > Want to Can t > Can / Will Spend / Spent > Utilize Buy / Paid > Invest Cost / Loss > Return / Gain Here is an example of how to use the chart above: I have to go to work today. > I want to go to work today. As you repeat these sentences you can clearly feel a heaviness with the first sentence. The second sentence feels more light and freer. Many people say to me at first, But I don t want to go to work!!! I understand. Yet, don t you want to live in a nice home, aka pay your mortgage or rent? Don t you want to feed yourself good organic food? These two high qualities of life are a direct result from creating income in your life. Now I believe in doing something you love, hence why I teach life purpose. I want you to be thrilled when you perform those income generating tasks. I have found, by working with clients in the MoClar Life Purpose Program, that if you feel gratitude with your current life in this very moment, it will be easier to identify your purpose. This is why moving from scarcity to abundance is a key first step
Learn to Shift Your Words Let s do another example... I am trying to work less to create more joy. > I am doing less work to create space for more joyful experiences. I am sure in that second sentence in the above example you can feel the empowerment of doing instead of just trying. The second sentence is proactive in creating the steps toward more joyful experiences. The first sentence feels more exhausting as if creating joy is a chore. It also has a guilty overtone to it. As if someone is calling you out on not being joyful. In a white paper written by Wendy Jansen of Wilma. van den Heuvel, she writes about the language of scarcity verses abundance. She created a chart of key concepts that I think are helpful to further your understanding of this subject manner. Scarcity Thinking Verses Abundance Thinking Limited Limitless Structured Unstructured Impersonal Personal Fear Vision Closed Open Control Curious Fact Experience Profit Result Quantity Quality Position Possibility Output Outcome Clearly Defined Endless Chronologic Now - 5 -
Abundance Building Worksheet Use this abundance building worksheet to write down sentences that you catch yourself saying that contain the scarcity words from the table on page 4. Then recreate those sentences using abundance terms. The more you consciously practice this skill of deep self listening and reframing your perception, the more you instinctively live from the abundance mindset.
