1 !! Peter D Adamo, an American doctor, produced a book titled Eat Right for Your Type. In his publication he explains his idea about how people s blood type works as an important factor in determining a healthy diet. In contrast to his " # confidence, most people who specialize in nutrition thought it was a silly idea. Especially those who work as dieticians, physicians and nutritionists said that the whole idea had no scientific basis whatever. Dr. D Adamo $ claims that foods contain different kinds of lectin*, a kind of protein that reacts differently depending on the ABO blood type. According to his book, each blood type has a different antigen*, which could react negatively with a certain kind of lectin in food, causing health problems. What he tells people to do in order to minimize this risk is to eat food which contains the lectin that matches their blood type. There are two important % previous studies that Dr. D Adamo makes reference to. One study was & carried out in 1901 by Dr. Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian biologist and physicist. He discovered that blood can be grouped according to the percentage of agglutinin*, a kind of protein contained in it. He received the Nobel

2 Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for his discovery of human blood types. The other study is by William C. Boyd, an American immunologist* who carried out a worldwide survey of blood type distribution in the 1930s. He was the first to discover that people s blood types are determined by genes and not by the environment. He divided the world population into 13 groups of geographically distinct races and different genetic blood groups. Dr. D Adamo applied this theory and! conceived the idea of combining the ABO blood grouping system with recommended diets for each blood group. " He says that those who belong to blood group O have the earliest type of human blood. They were hunters # originally, so they need to follow a meat-rich diet, eating food high in animal protein. On the other hand, he calls those with type A blood cultivators, whose blood evolved with the development of agriculture. They need to eat a lot of vegetables and avoid eating meat. Those with blood type B are called nomads*, who supposedly have strong immune systems, and therefore, are the only group who can consume dairy products. Finally, those with blood type AB are called enigmas*, whose blood has evolved most recently. Their dietary recommendation is somewhere between those for type AandtypeB. However, this dietary method faced many criticisms. One criticism was that there was no clear evidence to prove the theory, and Dr. D Adamo had also cited inadequate results from other research to suit his ideas. Another criticism claims $ that this method has not yet been clinically tested. People may want to wait for further trials before trying it out themselves.
