1 How do colors affect or reflect our feelings and personality traits? What does the color blue bring to mind for you? Red? Yellow?

2 What color are you? A senseless question or is it? Most of us are at least two toned. How can that be? Psychologists tell us that certain colors trigger certain feelings or moods in many people. Some colors are warm while others are cool. Some colors attract attention; others blend in with their surroundings. Our own interpretation of (or feelings about) colors, along with our self knowledge, can be a good combination to start a two tone poem.

3 In each write down a color which reflects two different aspects of your personality. Generally, we look for a more positive trait for one, and for the other, we look for something we view as more negative. However, that is not a requirement for this activity.

4 On the next few slides, there are some samples for you to enjoy. If your mind starts to wander like Anastasia s did, you have your paper in front of you; jot your ideas down as they come into your head. You don t have to use them all, but they may come in handy later. Part of me is brilliant yellowlively and vivacious about this poem? bouncy and bouyant, What do you like teasing my friends and enjoying the spotlight. But deep inside there s another part, pale purple, like a violet hiding under a leaffearful and cowardly, shaking with stage fright when the telephone rings. Yet they re both very real, and they re both me! What are some poetic devices that you notice in this poem? Describe the structure or organization Of this poem.

5 Take a few minutes and add some ideas to your circles. 8 Instead of Happy, use Instead of sad, use Instead of mad, use Instead of afraid, use Instead of interested, use Instead of confident, use Instead of shame, use Instead of loving, use Now consider moods or feelings you might add to your circles: Satisfied Content Cheerful Playful thrilled Hopeless defeated Dismal Melancholy somber Annoyed Frustrated Offended Indignant furious Alarmed Hesitant Threatened Petrified terrified Eager Intrigued Inquisitive fascinated intent Calm Independent Courageous Respected loyal Uncomfortable Embarrassed Humiliated Dependent weak Accepting Understanding Sharing Affectionate passionate Miscellaneous Confused Torn Distant Puzzled Envious Evasive Powerless Helpless Humble Shocked Uninformed disregarded Impulsive Cruel Preoccupied bored Physical Indicators of strong Emotion: tense, breathless, nauseated, fatigue, shaky, cold or hot, fast heartbeat, headaches, lack of appetite.

9 *As I usually tell all of my students, I don taskyoutodowhat to I haven t tried to do myself. So here is my two tone poem from many years ago. *The thing I want you to get is that you can do your own way. Please notice that sample poems certainly inspired my yp poem, but I changed the structure substantially. *We will require that you use some literary devices. In particular, 2 sound devices and 2 comparative devices. Your poem should have at least two colors, at least 3 stanzas which includes a closing piece. *As always, if you make an extra effort, we love to give extra y, y, g credit so have at it!

11 These are my Drafts. Notice that Number 3 looks finished, everytime I looked back, Ik kept seeing the poem better and wanting to make it better so I kept making little changes.

12 Your final draft can look very different than the ones you ve seen. Make it your own.

13 Here are some other samples. Everyone does it their own way.

15 Now it is your turn. *Finish brainstorming on the circles. If you need to, add a circle. *What format will fit what you have before you? *Write your thoughts in poetic lines like the sample poets did. (make sure to use figures of speech, strong adjectives. Try to make up an original name for your color elephant gray, sunset pink, pickle green. Etc. You could even do something with polka dots, stripes or plaids.) *Once that is done, reread what you have written. What might you add, omit, substitute, move? Revise RE SEE Check your spelling and punctuation. EDIT not because we tell you to, but because it will make your poem better! *Finally, prepare your final presentation of the poem in a way that accentuates or brings out your poem.
