1 Hi, there. I m Biggy, said the big toe, and the little toe replied, Hello, I m Twiggy. Right at that moment, the three middle toes turned to the left, then turned to the right, and they started talking too. Hi, there. I m Biggy. Hello, I m Twiggy. Well, my name is Iggy, said the second toe. And my name is Ziggy, said the fourth toe. Twyla had met Biggy, Iggy, Ziggy, and Twiggy, but the middle toe had not said a word. A couple of silent minutes went by.
2 Chapter 4 When Twyla went to school that day, she couldn t stop thinking about those talking toes. She had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye as she carried her secret around with her. The smile on her face and twinkle in her eye was something the other children had never seen.
3 That night after eating dinner, doing her homework, and watching a little TV she began to get ready for bed. She brushed her teeth, got undressed, put on her pajamas, all the while feeling good and thinking about what a great day it had been. And then, again, she sat on her bed, staring at her right foot. Well, said Biggy, I m exhausted. I m glad you had a good time today. Me, too, said Ziggy. It was fun listening to what you talked about with the other children. Yes, said Iggy. I laughed at the jokes. It was fun, said Twiggy, but I m glad to be bare toed again. And last again came the words of wisdom from the voice of Moish: When there s a twinkle in your eyes, It attracts the gals and guys. When you walk around with a smile, Everyone really likes your style. So smile, be happy, be nice, be glad. It always helps you from feeling bad. And now I m going to say Good Night. We re all very tired, so please turn out the light. Twyla smiled at her talking toes, shut off the light, laid down with a smile on her face and drifted off to a good night s sleep. 4 Activity Directions CHAPTER 1 ACTIVITY DIRECTIONS: Distribute the activity sheet and crayons to each child. Then say: Imagine you, like Twyla, woke up one morning hearing noises coming from below your knees. When you look to see what s making all the noise, you find yourself staring at your toes. And they are talking to one another! In each bubble, write a name for each of your toes. In the story, Twyla is sad and lonely. Draw a picture what you think your face would look like if you were sad and lonely. Then add your hair and color a design on your pajamas. If there is enough time, allow the children to color the rest of their picture. CHAPTER 1 ACTIVITY DIRECTIONS: Distribute the activity sheet and crayons to each child. Then say: Each foot has five toes. If you were a toe, which toe would you like to be? A big toe? Little? Draw a picture of your face on the toe of your choice, showing how you feel. On the remaining four toes, draw a face that shows how each toe felt about wearing socks. If there is enough time, allow the children to color the rest of their picture. CHAPTER 3 ACTIVITY DIRECTIONS: Distribute the activity sheet and crayons to each child. Then say: Draw yourself waking up in bed. Are you are just waking up and yawning? Or are you awake and smiling at your toes? On the big toe, draw how you feel when you first wake up. Then add a blanket around your toes. If there is enough time, allow the children to color the rest of their picture.
