1 KEY / Notes 1. They fight with them because they were for opposing families and that's just what enemies do. 2. "Contrast" means "tell the differences." BENVOLIO: tries to STOP the fighting and resume PEACE. TYBALT: tries to get Benvolio to fight by saying he "hates peace, all Montagues, and thee." 3. Their wives say that they are too old to fight. 4. The Prince ends the fight. 5. Romeo is lovesick over a woman whom he loves who does not love him. 6. Capulet says "no" because: a. Juliet is only 13 and b. Juliet should be able to choose her own husband. 7. It's an annual feast--he gives this party every year. 8. He finds out from reading the guest list for Capulet's servant who cannot read. He decides to go to win the bet that he has with his cousin Benvolio. Benvolio says that if Romeo compares Rosaline with other women, he won't find her so beautiful. Romeo says he will. Rosaline's name was on the guest list. 9. Juliet has a very "formal" relationship with her parents. She is respectful but not relaxed with them. When her mother asks her what she thinks about getting married, she says she DOESN'T think about it. She agrees to meet Paris if her parents want her to meet him. 10. Romeo tells Benvolio he fears that whatever happens at the party tonight will somehow lead to his death. 11. Romeo is saying: "Darn it! I just fell in love with the enemy!"

3 1. R. tries to make peace between them BECAUSE Tybalt is his cousing now through marriage. 2. Mercutio is stabbed under R's arm when R tries to step between them. Tybalt is stabbed by R. 3. Banishment BECAUSE when R killed Tybalt, it's what the LAW would have done anyway. 4. Juliet goes through a roller coaster of emotions: a. DESPAIR - thinks R committed suicide, b. ANGER - mad that R killed Tybalt, c. RELIEF - realizes Tybalt would have klled R, d.shame- She should have defended R right away, and e. DEVASTATION - R. has been sent away from her 5. HYSTERIA! J doesn't want to go to HELL, which is what happens if you get married twice! 6. Lord Capulet is your typical Italian mob boss - nice, nice, nice until you cross him. Then BAM! ANGER! He says he'll DISOWN J and then she'll die in the street. 7. The NURSE says J should forget about R and just marry Paris. J decides to NEVER trust the Nurse with her secrets again.

4 1. J. goes to Friar Laurence's to figure out the plan to avoid a second marriage, the marriage to Paris. 2. J. drinks a potion to make her LOOK dead for 2 days. After her funeral, she and Romoe will sneak off to Mantua to live happily ever after. 2 1/2. When Juliet drinks the potion, she is full of doubts: A. Maybe it won't work at all and I'll have to marry Paris. No, I'll kill myself first. B. Maybe this is actually POISON because the Friar is trying to kill me to avoid disgrace. No, he's always been a holy man. C. Maybe it'll work but I'll wake up too early and suffocate because there's not enough air in the tomb. D. Maybe it'll work but I'll wake up too early, be terrified by the stuff in the tomb, grab a relative's bone and beat my brains in. :-( 2 3/4. The Nurse is the one who finds Juliet's "lifeless" body. 3. J is dead. R asks Balthazar about the Friar's letter. When there is none, he decides to buy poison from a drug dealer, travel to J's tomb, and kill himself next to her body. 4. The PLAGUE prevented Fr. John from delivering the letter to R. 5. Paris is weeping at J's tomb. He hears R coming, hides, and then tries to arrest him. It's dark, so R doesn't know who he's fighting and sees it's Paris after he has already killed him. 6. J won't live without R.
