3 UNIT 1 PREFIXES IR-, IM-, RE- IRREGULAR ir-, im-, re- A. Do you know any words starting with the prefixes ir-, im- or re-? Read the speech bubbles below and underline the ir-, im- or re- words Those nasty masters are back! We thought they were gone forever, but they reappeared. They are so mean to us. We must reconsider our lives because we don`t want to serve the masters anymore. We thought the masters were dead, but they are immortal! Worst of all, they stole all of our stuff! We are tired of their improper behaviour. No! We must not be irresponsible! It is our job to help the masters. We must keep helping them! Stop saying such irregular things! 2

6 UNIT 2 PREFIXES IN-, IL- INCREDIBLE in-, il- A. Read the story below and underline the words starting with the prefixes in- and il- then answer the question at the bottom of the page. George and Harold are very imaginative students. They decided to make a new superhero named Captain Underpants. He was very inappropriate, running around in his underpants with his super Wedgie Power! Mr. Krupp, the mean principal, was intolerant of the boys behaviour. He found George s illegible notes and decided that George and Harold were up to something. Mr. Krupp followed the boys and found them with the illegal hypnotising ring. Are you illiterate?!, yelled the nasty Mr. Krupp. Didn`t you read the school rules? NO superheroes allowed! Then, George and Harold hypnotised their mean school principal to become best friends with Captain Underpants. These students really have incredible imaginations! How many in- and il- words did you find? 5

10 UNIT 3 PREFIXES A-, UN- MEET ATYPICAL & UNUSUAL a-, un- A. Read the dialog between Phineas and Ferb and underline the words starting with the prefixes un- and a-. Thank you for rescuing me! I was so worried when the aliens tied me up. I am so glad you came to untie and save me! I was unable to come sooner because I was trapped in another dimension. It must have been very uncomfortable waiting for me. It was such an unusual dimension; everything seemed to be asymmetrical so it took me a long time to figure out the exit. Today is such an atypical day, how strange! 9

11 UNIT 3 PREFIXES A-, UN- When you put the prefixes a- or un- at the beginning of a word, they add a meaning to the word. The prefixes a- and un- have a similar meaning. They mean. B. Note down the 6 words that you have underlined in part A. C. 13 UNIT 4 PREFIX ANTI- ADVENTURE ANTIAGING anti- A. Read the passage below and underline the words starting with the prefix anti-. I am the first rabbit on the police force, so I take my job very seriously. Even when I am sick, I take antibiotics and go to work anyway. It is a very important job! The animals of zootopia need my help. For example, yesterday I was in the middle of giving a ticket to an angry antisocial man for smoking beneath an antismoking sign, when I got an important phone call. The mayor had been poisoned! I ran as fast as I could to the hospital to get the antidote. It was my big chance to save the day! But in the end, it was just a mistake. No one had really poisoned the mayor. He had put too much antiaging cream on his face! So, everyone thought he was poisoned. It was such a funny sight! B. Write down all the words you have underlined in part B. 12

15 UNIT 5 IDIOMS What are idioms, eh? Well, they are phrases or expressions that mean something different from what they seem. So, are you ready to figure out what idioms really mean? A. Look at the underlined phrases in the speech bubbles and try to understand what they actually mean. Did you find the English homework hard? The English homework was a piece of cake. Your teacher told me you did not turn it in. Did you really do it? Remember, you should always speak your mind! I did complete it!
