The present simple and continuous; the past simple and continuous The present simple and continuous We use the present simple to talk about habits and things that are always true. We often use the present simple with adverbs of frequency (always, often, sometimes, usually, hardly ever, never). Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb, but after be. We use the present continuous to talk about what we are doing now. We often use the present continuous with expressions of frequency (at the moment, now, right now). The past simple and continuous We use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. We use the past continuous to talk about an action that went on for some time. We often use the past continuous to describe things that were happening when something else happened. Past continuous Past simple Ryan was swimming when he saw a turtle. When a verb contains one short vowel and ends in a consonant, we double the consonant. Irregular verbs The past simple form of irregular verbs is often different form the past participle. We have to remember irregular forms. 9
