1 Left side of verb = subject Now we ll look at right side of verb Beware of Dog: Verbs, cont. The dog was (on the patio). Superverb/main verb (intransitive) The dog was eating on the patio. Superverb/HV + main verb The dog was eating a delicious lunch on the patio. Eating what? Transitive verb Passing action to...a noun I crumpled the paper. I threw the paper. I whacked a student. I dropped the book. The transitive verb changes the noun. It attacks the noun...an attack verb. He ran quickly: verb intransitive He ran a mile: verb transitive Right side of transitive verb = direct object; you re directly receiving the action Right side of linking verb = predicate noun. The dog was a delicious lunch. Dog = delicious lunch, equal, linking; you can reverse order Delicious lunch = dog Predicate nominative I am the dog. The dog is me. Old King Cole was a merry old soul and a merry old soul was he. The dog was delicious. Delicious was the dog. Predicate adjective They are holding hands, not attacking. Linking verb. Linking verbs start with to be verbs She seems happy. Happy she seems. This smells good. Good smells it. (Sounds, tastes, feels, became looks, etc.) Linking verb has to be main verb.
